I appreciate that part about sleeping an entire day during the weekend. I fell into that for what feels like my first 3 years of being an engineer. I was kicking myself the entire time for not being strong enough to hack it. The thing is: WE NEED SLEEP.

As an international student from Japan, learning to become part of the tech industry in North America, I can learn and sympathize a lot from your content. I'm about to graduate next month and I'm pretty anxious on my life after college. It's so much pressure and impostor syndrome always kicks in. I was planning to develop my communication and interpersonal skills during my internship because I'm a Introverted person, but we only did a work-from-home type of internship. Pandemic screwed all my plans.

Enjoyed your response to 'Comparing yourself with others.' Bottom line: it's a waste of time and has no basis. Because like you said, we're all incredibly varied and complex in personality, genetics, past experiences, childhood shaping, current family affects, stages in life, status of physical and mental health, overall self esteem... so many things come to mind. The primary result of allowing the mental loop of negative comparisons to continue, is killing your own motivation, discouragement, apathy, numbness, giving up, loss of inspiration - and all very quickly. So, notice the habit in yourself and realize there's absolutely no good about it, and no real friend would want you to do it. Be happy for what others can do. And definitely be happy with what you can do - as well as your own progress, even if it seems small. Clearing your head of negative comparisons will in itself help you do better work! :) The only contrasting advice is - don't be arrogant and full of yourself for anything, either. :) That's the opposite unhealthy mental condition, and has no more justification than viewing yourself as nothing. After all, even if a person is highly skilled or talented, if they are full of themselves and think only about themselves, what good is it? Humility is greater than ability. A note on your equipment. Nice setup :) Zoom H4N Pro recorders are excellent and a great price for the quality (especially if you get a Warehouse deal on Amazon.) The interface is a little annoying (especially at first): you must learn to accept the minor scroll-wheel frustrations. Also, you should use an 8GB or maybe 16GB card and not more, unless you want to wait a couple minutes for the thing to turn on! (No spontaneous fast recording is gonna happen!) :) Those things aside, the Zoom H4N records so stinking well, with highly professional quality. (Use WAV format for the best results.) Whether field recording, music jam sessions, capturing tiny little sounds, or simply conversations - it's a sweet recorder. :)

The part about sleeping all weekend to recover from the work week hits home so hard LOL. What I personally hate about myself is putting work before myself, physically and mentally. When I fall into a bad cycle, it's really hard to get out of. It's easier to set minimums (like bare minimum workouts or not eating out more than x times per week) to help maintain myself. More often than not, I end up exceeding my minimums once I got going.

Hey Mayuko, first of all, keep with the great work you've been doing! I've been following your channel for some time and you make great content. As for your video ideas request, maybe you could review some game you've been playing in your free time, or your personal impressions on some hobby or step-by-step DIY any type of project you might be interested in - tech-related or not. In my honest opinion, I appreciate your content because it is not only interesting, but it is of great quality and it brings your personal opinion/impressions or ideas. The work you put in editing the video, bringing images or video cuts, doing some research... or even throwing in some jokes, is satisfying to watch and hear overall. Keep in mind that you don't need to make every video a life-changing-inspiring-coaching philosophic endeavor. We appreciate listening/watching your opinion on a wide range of subjects. Here are some actionable ideas to generate content: - play a videogame and review it - your impressions (VR, PS5, PC, anything, polemic Cyberpunk, etc) - pick a DIY tutorial and record your tries and the final product - read/comment news you've been following (tech-related or not) - what do you think about bitcoin - clickbait lol - more content from your hackathons or group studies, maybe going hands-on with some real project or code, talking about what do you understand, or maybe what you don't I know, maybe these are trash ideas but to be honest, I'd love to follow any of these subjects as long as they've got your take and insights. While we are on the subject, a long time ago I started to follow a guy talking about "how he became a self-taught programer" and his opinion and advice... it was super interesting at the time, but he's been talking about the same subject in different ways for years! The content is always the same, with just different clickbait titles and weird thumbnails... well sorry for the long post, here is a potato: .-"'"-. | | (`-._____.-') .. `-._____.-' .. .', :./'.== ==.`\.: ,`. : ( : ___ ___ : ) ; '._.: |0| |0| :._.' / `-'_`-' \ _.| / \ |._ .'.-| ( ) |-.`. //' | .-"`"`-'"`"-. | `\\ || | `~":-...-:"~` | || || \. `---' ./ || || '-._ _.-' || / \ _/ `~:~` \_ / \ ||||\) .-' / \ `-. I would like to see what helped you become more reflective. I see that you ask yourself questions and then ask questions about those questions. So I don't know what this would entail but I would like to see your thought process a little bit more on how you reflect on life decisions in the past. Something along those lines. :) Also, I would love to see a video from you talking about who you look up to and who inspires you. What books have you read that have had an impact on the way you look at life? What content do you watch or read or absorb in some other way that motivates you or inspires you?

Hey one suggestion , can you please make a video on some sort of investment strategies ? It would be great for people like us who are starting their career and get to know where we could invest.
@Dennisvm823 жыл бұрын
Hi Mayuko, great video and content. Many things you talked about are really relatable. I tend to stick to one thing at a time before moving on to the next problem. Using a scrum board (we work with GitLab) helps me a lot with this. I often look at stuff I have to do as small achievements or steps to reach the end. Finishing small(er) things (e.g. bug fixing, code improvements, etc.) gives me a sense of accomplishment (達成感ですね), hence keeps me motivated. My wife, who is also Japanese, has a completely different character. This makes us very compatible (I am blood-type O and she is B). I haven't watched all of your videos, but maybe do something related to the communication you mentioned in this video. I noticed (and know from experience) that effectively communicating with co-workers, team leaders, etc. can be a struggle. You could talk about character types and/or ways to improve work relationships, or how to work in teams (designers and developers look at stuff differently).

Referring to the question about feeling tired about after work. I currently working in management and my work is physically demanding and mentally demanding and my schedule can really be any time of the day from 6m-12pm. I still manage to balance everything out but do you think that the mental demand from doing a job as a software developer will be the same? I wonder what's the cost of living in US compared to japan? maybe, you could do your work/projects underneath a sakura tree, with a good view at some valley in kyoto. wouldn't it be nice? as for unfinished projects... maybe it would be best that you vlog it and share it with us. that's an additional content too! or how about this... learn something new like webassembly(using c++ and emscriptn), make a project, and we'll learn it together and ask us, your viewers, of what other features we could add up in the project! reward system - 'care to consider the punishment system? :D if you keep rewarding yourself or someone, someone's likely not gonna step up his/her game. but the punishment system will make'em. but that's just me.

Hey Mayuko, I know you arent but dont be too hard on yourself with finishing projects. Some projects just stay WIP indefinitely while some gets finished prolly when it is work or paid for. What is most important is you get to code still on your free time...or actually do the things you like without commitments. I get that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, dont forget to be awesome. -John
