Cats tend to enjoy spaces that are clearly delineated from the surrounding area, regardless of if it's a box or something else. There's a stray living outside my parents place, and one time a newspaper had blown out of the porch recycling bin into the yard. My parents didn't bother to pick it up for a long time and the stray would sit and sleep on it routinely.

Good eye! Yes , that young one was injured by a predator I think, but so tough just kept plugging away and although the rear legs healed they never regained full function, but it still gets around.

Yes, he earned it - he's part of the messed up ecosystem and now has a part to play in it. As I noted in the video, fractured ecosystems can't be generalized in studies and in this particular case I'm quite sure all the rats are far more destructive than a feral cat that eats some of them. In other ecosystems that may not be the case. BB

People are overly concerned for birds when it comes to cats, but onpy because of statistics coming out of Hawaii, Australia, and other places where small cats were never indigenous. A cat can almost never catch a healthy adult bird (amongst those birds whom have evolved to escape ground predators (ie non-Australian/Hawaiin/Etc)), and will much prefer rats, mice, voles, shrews, and the like. Moreover, people don't seem to realize that we've pushed out and greatly deminished the native predators that would normally have eaten these animals in the cats place.

That poor tuxedo female is terrified. Hope you've got some decent organizations down your way to help out with rescues. Ferals are ferals and can have a decent life but lost or abandoned former pets are usually not happy stuck in survival mode and can be rehabilitated and placed. That's how I got all my kitties over the years!

@MyBackyardBirding Yes. Coyotes - not as frequently as in years past. Opossums frequently. Of course raccoons. I'd love to see a fox. Watched a marvelous documentary explaining how foxes are taking over in all areas - particularly doing well in cities. Thanks again for sharing. I enjoyed the time I spent watching the pleasure the big kitties got in the boxes.

Semi-feral and stray cats live in a condo complex I live in that is located in a pleasant dead end neighborhood with lots of trees and a small woodlot in a mid-size city in the Northeast. 2 of the strays and 2 of the semi-ferals have become accustomed to me as I have 3 older blankets laying on my rear deck for them to rest on and give them a wide variety of food sources. I've come to notice that domestic cats enjoy resting on surfaces that are flat and prefer comfort like firmness and cushioning. Domestic cats will rest on a floor mat instead of hard flooring if available and love soft, comfy sofas and chairs. It's very similar to what humans prefer to relax on and lay on. Boxes might have something to do with territory or "do not disturb" due to the vertical frame acting like a fence or boundary. Domestic cats are territorial and will swipe at most other cats that interfere. So the vertical frame of a box will prevent other cats from getting too close to the one resting in the box.

Late to the comments page due to the list you provided and others I bumped into. I think I’m fully up to date on your BackyardCats videos. I found your feral enlightenment and acceptance from some 10 years ago heartwarming, and I so appreciate you dispelling “your” ferals’ preferences for rats and lizards over birds. Can’t say I have any insider knowledge about what attracts some cats to boxes. At this time, I have only one box-lover of the 3 current freeloaders who call this home. Of the dozens I have hosted long and short term over many years, I have observed that paper products are quite attractive - newspapers, writing pads, magazines, and the random paper towel that has fallen to the floor - over and above most other options. My formerly feral female likes to puncture cardboard and paper with her teeth, and my youngest and most recent addition has no interest in boxes, but prefers a micro-bead pillow to sleep on and play with … or the dog’s tail. They keep many secrets to themselves. Thanks for this really long video of cats in a box (and I watched it twice!)

I am surprised that these feral cats like boxes. My sister lives in rural Mims,Fl; she is often catching feral cats and having them spayed and vac for rabies. Adults are released, but kittens she gives to a rescue org. But, she has kept quite a few over the years also. I live in Scottsdale,AZ where coyotes must keep the feral cats population down to zero. I never see any.

I feel sorry for them because their lives are usually very miserable. During droughts they can't find water which leads to getting UTI's and kidney failure which is a miserable death. Until just a few years ago Animal Control would trap them and bring them to be euthanized and our County alone in just one years time, had euthanized over 10,000 cats. Since they decided to end that, we can only imagine how many there are now. They are an invasive species and killing Florida's natural species of birds, lizards, geckos, snakes, etc. I see them around here killing baby possums all the time which saddens me. More people in Florida have contracted Rabies from feral cats over the last few years than from a raccoon. Most cases are when someone sees a kitten and goes to pick it up and is bitten. I have mixed feelings about feral cats just as I do about coyotes... who by the way love going after feral cats.

Yeah, I'm slowly working through taking care of the ones around here, except the old timer, he'll never be caught and will live out his days out back. At least the females and the big new tom were removed and fixed and relocated. But the problem is pretty overwhelming. BB
