The Take normal? Pam wasn’t normal 😂 there are stages to being an office fan. Beginners love Jim and Pam but it takes a seasoned veteran to realize mike and holly are the special couple with Dwight and angela being a distant second but mid level people tend to like Dwight and Angela most. The longer you watch the more you realize pam is the worst character who holds Jim back with no awareness

when pam said "I don't think anything's going to change in are lives now with work and two kids nothing interesting is going to happen to us for a long long time" I just thought y-o-u bitch. the look on Jim's face just says {so your not happy I'm happy I love our life I love our kids I love you how could I not be happy? am I nothing to you? and the kids did you really just say our lives are uninteresting are we not good enough for you?) she might as well spit in his face. and when he's being a good husband and trying to be a better provider to honor his wife and children she terns her nose up at him again might as well spit in his face. when your a parent life's not about you its about the kids *ANYTHING* AND *EVERYTHING* IS FOR *THEM* .

That episode immediately followed Phyllis's wedding, where Pam had reunited with Roy. In turn, that led Jim to be more committed to his relationship with Karen. The two of them spent the episode working to convince Dwight that Jim had been turned into a vampire. Oscar and Gil turned up, but Gil insulted Pam's artwork. This is Gil's final appearance in the series, and Oscar decides to break up with him 6 episodes later.

Yes but then during the beach episode Pam got selective amnesia...she didn't acknowledge that Michael went to her art show much less bought one of her paintings. After she walked on the hot rocks she tells the office "none of you went to my art show" i dont know how she could have forgotten about Michael. She felt shitty that night and he made her feel better by showing up as a friend would do. So what the hell Beesly?! Michael went to your art show because he's the world's best boss! 😉

one of the Pam scenes that touches me the most is when she's still engaged to Roy. earlier in the episode, she talked about how she wanted a house with a terrace when she grew up. during the episode she decides to pursue an artistic opportunity, and we see her arguing about it with Roy. and then she gives an interview portion where she's talking about how its unrealistic to want a house with a terrace, how they don't even have that kind of house in Pennsylvania, and she starts crying. even though shes talking about how she wont live in a house like that, its clear that she's thinking about how she wont become an artist, its unrealistic for her to pursue her dreams, because this is what Roy has made her believe. idk man but that scene always makes me tear up. shes so good and sweet and it sucks that she didn't have a boyfriend who supported her aspirations. go live in that house with a terrace, pam!

V HS I feel like Jim tried to support her artistic career but in the end he kinda jumped the gun by going ahead with his own career pursuits. Like when they had kids it was just assumed Pam would be the one to stay at home with the kids. Anyone saying that Pam became too “bitchy” or “selfish” in the later seasons is extremely hypocritical. Michael and Dwight treated their coworkers badly and put them in danger multiple times yet are regarded as the best and funniest characters on the show. Jim was also selfish at various points and didn’t consult Pam on important decisions, expecting her to just be ok with them. Pam was the rock of the show and it wouldn’t have survived with or past Michael without her. She brought the heart and human element that was needed to put the office above other comedies

Maybe they'd interacted other times but it didn't make the doc. Only this time they actually used the part where boom op steps in, because the doc is winding down. Also possible that crew would've been less likely to interact earlier on. Boom Op isn't SUPPOSED to step in like that of course, but since they're in the home stretch he figures, "Screw it." I also don't remember if it's stated how long that Boom Op has been employed. It's normal for crew to shift around, especially since they were shooting for nine freaking years. @@Bell_Matt Well, I mean, she had to deal with the fact that her daughter caught lice and brought it home so Pam had been up all night trying to take care of her kids and clean up the house. She then went into work and once everyone blamed Meredith for lice Pam thought maybe she could stay quiet and people will forget. Instead Meredith shaved all her hair off, Pam volunteered to buy all the mayo, did Creed's hair only to have him not do her hair, and then she accidentally outs herself as the true lice carrier. The point of the whole episode is that despite Pam's best efforts to keep her home separate from her work sometimes she'll accidentally get her home life problems leak into her work life and make a mess of things. On the upside, Meredith and Pam bond over the mess and Pam gives Meredith kudos for raising her kids by herself.

I didn't even know Pam got hate honestly. She's just such a sweet character I don't get it. Like sure she's normal but she isn't even boring, she's an artist. She's passionate about stuff. She's very funny and has a lot of banter. I've always liked her a lot. I can understand that she wouldn't be everyone's favorite character (even tho she actually probably is mine from the show) but I don't see how people can hate her. She's genuinely a nice person. People use tv shows as an escapism too much...like they can say all they want they love Kelly and Angela and they hate Pam but we all know IRL nobody would want to hang out with Kelly when they would really appreciate having a Pam in their life cuz she's just that great. She's nice, sweet and funny. What would they want more from her ?
@johnwalker1058
@johnwalker1058 4 жыл бұрын
Pam is a sweet and nice character overall, but people often hate on her for complacency and weakness. I personally consider the latter two criticisms of Pam to have some grains of truth in them, but to also be quite harsh and hurtful when expressed to that extent of frankness and contempt. However, when surveying different opinions of Pam and explanations for those opinions, those traits come up repeatedly among the most common criticisms of Pam's character. As far as I can tell, you will find that, since strength and various character virtues related to strength such as determination, doggedness, assertiveness, perseverance, resilience, etc. are highly valued, a character who does not possess such traits, at least not to the extent that would satisfy those who expect to see them to a certain extent in someone, that character will be held in contemptuous and highly critical views for the lack of such desired traits and receive a great deal of criticism accordingly. People complain that Pam is too complacent and tolerant of mediocrity, lacking more ambition like Jim or Karen. They may complain that Pam is too unassertive and how her being a doormat makes her "pathetic." They may complain that Pam is undetermined and lacks perseverance for failing to continue pursuing her art dreams, or work with gaining skills in graphic design, etc. However, I would argue that people are too harsh in these criticisms of Pam. Pam had an unsupportive fiance who squashed her dreams and held her back, some setbacks in life that got in the way of her goals, and various ties to her surrounding circumstances in their present state (such as her relationship with Jim, familial-like bonds with a number of coworkers that she grew close to over the years, and a comfortable life in Scranton) that made a pursuit of normalcy and an embrace of the mundane to be understandable. While it is true that Pam could work more on those strength-related qualities people criticized her for lacking, at least many of those same people fail to take into account how Pam was gaining those traits, but that it takes time for people to change qualities about themselves in the quest of self-improvement and the lifelong journey of perpetual growth and development toward better and better states of being. Pam did become bolder and more outspoken as the series progressed. She did become more assertive of her own needs and interests, both in the face of others who would have walked all over her before, and in the face of circumstances that she would have previously retreated from in defeat. She gave up on a career in art, but did not give up her pursuit of artistic endeavor completely, while managing to incorporate artistic touches in her work at DM such as the chore wheel and the warehouse mural. She stood up to Angela at times when Angela was harsh with her, and did not suffer in silence when Michael or Ryan said something inappropriate. Those people also often fail to take into account some of the difficulties previously mentioned that threaten to slow down such progress (an unsuitable relationship with Roy, setbacks from challenges of pursuing a career in art, and not wanting to lose the positive things she had gained through her connection to Dunder Mifflin and Scranton and her life in those spheres). While challenges and setbacks such as these do not necessarily render self-improvement impossible, they do increase the difficulty of its actualization, and make a slower progress toward its progressive actualizations more understandable. So, in consideration of how Pam progressed to have greater strength-related virtue over time, and how such traits supplemented already-existing kindness-related virtues of her friendliness, nurturing care, compassion and empathy, as well as some traces of uniqueness-related qualities such as a quirky charm and wit, I would still consider Pam to be a wonderful character overall. She is undeserving of the harshest criticisms against her, and, in my opinion, is rightly cherished by the fans who appreciate her very real and demonstrative qualities.

This is exactly it. I could understand disliking her in the first seasons (even if I still feel like hate is such a strong word especially for fictional characters) but she had a great growth and completely better herself to actually go for things she wants in life, and be strong and open with issues. I know there's some controversy about the trope of Jim's job and how it affected negatively his marriage with Pam. A lot of people thought that was unnecessary but it's in those moments in the show that we saw Pam had grown. Instead of not asking or demanding anything she used to suffer through with Roy, but she didn't let that happen with Jim especially since she had children this time.

@Raquel That genuinely might be it. Pam is a pretty relatable woman. Women can see themselves in her and men can see a lot of women they know in her. It wouldn't surprise me she could create very strong feeling of hate and distaste in people who are misogynistic (regardless if it's internalized or not). You can dislike her that's fair, but hating her seems really irrational from how she behaves frankly.
@violetrose674
@violetrose674 3 жыл бұрын
@Raquel Honestly, I don't see how people blame Pam in season 9. She was working a full time job while taking care of a baby and a toddler. Jim didn't tell her about his plans to uproot their entire family and move them to a place completely different from the one she was used to. Jim also wasn't under nearly as much stress. Yes, he had to do his job (like every other person) but as we see, he's having the time of his life. He didn't even care that Pam getting a job in Philly could have ruined the work she put in to get where she was. Jim also said to Toby, "If I didn't do things without telling her, she would still be with Roy" which was honestly a shitty thing to say. He basically said that Pam wasn't capable of making decisions for herself. I like Jim but he isn't perfect and acting like he's so much better than Pam is just plain ignorant
@Kopp203
@Kopp203 3 жыл бұрын
@Raquel Rubbish. Pam was a deeply flawed, weak woman and people disliked her for numerous reasons, almost none of which were because of her being female. She shamelessly toyed with Jim for nearly 3 seasons, friendzoning and manipulating someone she could see was clearly in love with her, so she could get the respect and emotional connection she wasn't getting from Roy with another man, with no regard for how this affected him. She destroyed Jim, forcing him to move away so she couldn't wreck him any further. She was well aware of his feelings, as you can see in the "Jinx" episode, where she's telling the silent Jim that he can tell her anything. She sees the raw pain on his eyes and you can see her face drop once she realizes she's taken the joke too far and sh1t just got real. I am glad they eventually came together, the Jim & Pam relationship was one of the things most compelling about the show, but don't try and dismiss the Pam dislike as "MUH SEXISM!!!" as that's just a whitewash. Ultimately, she was a coward that didn't deserve Jim and Jim deserved better than sloppy seconds to a degenerate sexist pig like Roy.

Not all people is aware of themselves or what is holding them back and certainly most of people get stuck in life. Pam was scared of change and she was very insecure yet she was special and quirky in her own way. She was "normal" yet she had a great imagination,, she was playful and sensitive. Her art may seemed simple and cute, but it was very personal , it reflected her personality at the time, I wonder what else she would create now that she take a big step. Other thing I like about Pam and other characters in the Office is that they show that there is no age limit to pursuit your dreams, find love and live the life you want.

So.. when you say 'no one noticed' you're just saying "I never noticed". Essentially everyone noticed, because that's what the show was partially about was uncomfortable situations. We all were watching harassment in the form of an awkward drama. That was a major identity of The Office.

I really like the episode where Michael goes to her art show to see her art and pictures and how the only other person to show up and see them are Oscar and his partner and oscar’s partner talks crap about her art and oscar tries to be more sympathetic to Pam and less harsh but just to be nice and then surprisingly Michael loves her art! Truly loves it and it shows since Michael is a terrible liar and pretty transparent and HE makes her day just with his compliments and enthusiasm. He believes in her and she is very much grateful for that and how HE sees that Pam really appreciates Dunder Mifflin at the end of the day unlike most in the office who would quickly take an offer somewhere else. Pam sticks to it even through all their shenanigans and again it shows when she quits to follow Michael to his new company.

i love michael and pam's relationship so much. i find it so interesting how there are so many different kinds of relationships woven in their bond. as the audience, you can't really tell if they have an older brother-younger sister relationship, father-daugther relationship, or even sometimes a slightly romantic relationship. as his receptionist, pam has a unique bond with michael in the sense that she knows who calls him, and who he talks to, and through that she understands him better as a person, leading to her being more sympathetic towards him.

Something I really like about Pam is that she's essentially the anti-manic pixie dream girl. She's not a writer's fantasy who waltzes into your life to make you feel more "alive" or to "complete" you. She's someone you'd actually know and befriend. Her "normalcy" is exactly what makes people like her because we all know a Pam Beesly in real life. She's the girl who sat next to you in class in high school, laughing along with you about the absurd things your teacher and classmates would do. The co-worker you commiserate with when your boss and co-workers get on your nerves. Her familiarity and commonality is what draws you in. Then you get to know her complexities and realize that everyone is more than meets the eye.

Pam always symbolized to me the importance of being boring normal. All my life I was scared that I wouldn't be interesting enough for people to like me and I really struggled with trying to understand that people could like just normal boring people. But watching the office and seeing how Jim could love a normal person sooo much taught me that I don't have to lie to get people to like me and that one day a Jim could come into my life and love my boring self and just that.

Pam’s character development is probably my favorite. The two best turning points for her character are the art show when Oscar said honesty and courage aren’t her strong suits, and then when Pam in the next episode (i think) tells the bartender that one of the beers was supposed to be a light beer. After that she only got more courageous a little bit at a time

Why did the office creators made Jim pursue his career and not Pam? This may not be a popular opinion, but Pam wasn't a very good artist (ok, she sucked) and not exactly exceptional at her job, whereas Jim sort of skyrocketed once he found something he genuinely loved. Not a diss on Pam, I just think she was realistic with herself once she came back from NYC, and turned her focus on her marriage, raising kids, and eventually getting the fam out of Scranton. And you're right, all of that counts as a full time job IMO.

This was an amazing post and explained perfectly the arc of Pam B.H. who I think stands alone in the depiction of females on TV. It also explains why the haters are so critical of her because she doesnt act the way they feel she should and should always bend for others. I think most people struggle with self worth and confidence and Im so glad Pam stayed a real flawed character. I think Jenna F did such a great job in this role and made Pam such a relatable and vulnerable soul. All the trolls and haters cant change how important she was to the Office on so many levels. The writers did though and for that I am thankful!

Looking at the art show scene with Oscar through this lens, i actually think he was being supportive in his own way. I mean, maybe he didn't greet Pam or.kick it with her, but he showed up and gave his honest opinion without being condescending. All he said was that those weren't Pam's strong points. With someone like Oscar, he's just pointing out what he sees as fact without bias.
