So instead of looking at this literally, figuratively might also give us some answers. Okay, so to the basics. All of the children taken are boys. They are also street kids, or lower class kids. Let's say pleasure island isn't an actual island or theme park. But more of like what the old villainous men who buy the boys would call "pleasure island". Prehaps this is like a red light district for young boys. So the kids who were normal, are turned into donkeys by their over indulgence, which could also be seen as over indulging in drugs and sex. And the creepy guys who who pick up the kids, look like pimps and they groom the kids and sell them off to higher paying pimps. Sadly, I wish this was only about child labor, but there are pimps, old rich men, drugs, and the grooming and selling of children. Its fucking ridiculous that the rich men in power make movies about their perverted lives and we think their kids movies... fuck

Someone needs to make a spin-off sequel where someone DOES stop the whole operation and serves the Coachmen justice
@English_Thespian6 жыл бұрын
Simple-Commentator-not-really But that is not the purpose of the film. The message of Pleasure Island and the Coachmen is that if you make enough bad choices in life (like the rampant teenage hedonism that Pleasure Island represents), you can get yourself into a situation where there's no way out and no happy ending. You lose your humanity - literally! - and you become a slave to someone else forever. The reason why the Coachman gets away with it is because the donkey slavery is the epitome of a self-imposed hell-on-earth, and there is never a time in history when that is not possible. It's an ever-present danger that people can always fall into, so they always have to be wary they don't fall into it themselves. Check out Jordan Peterson's take on the whole film, it's really amazing.

Eventually, the Coachman himself drinks from that water, and he is transformed into Monstro. I think this is a very clever thing to do. We had so many stories back in the day, witch a boy whose thumbs were cut off by an evil man because he kept sucking them or a boy that starved to death because he was too picky and wouldn't eat his soup, or a girl who burnt herself to death because she played with matches. These "scary" stories are meant to teach children to behave well and listen to their parents, otherwise bad things'll happen. Kids nowadays are just too soft and pampered with all that pg-13 stuff. It's not about violence and showing/not showing it, it's about the lessons and morals that can be learnt from them.

Windmelodie No seriously, those stories don't teach anything. They are causing fear, but fear should not be the motivation to behave properly. Especially Max and Moritz, who turn into chicken food in the end, which is just horrifying.

As a kid, those stories helped me understand that my parents knew best and that I should listen to them and behave. Even nowadays, I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I don't whore myself around, I don't smoke and I don't disrespect my elders. Sure, the stories were sometimes scary, but then my mother would assure me that those were just stories...but that bad things COULD really happen if I didn't listen and misbehaved. My parents were authoritarian, but not conservative, so I was given a lot of freedom, but at the same time, if they said no, it meant no and I respected that. I never yelled at my parents or insulted them because that is how I was raised. Sometimes, things have to be scary in order to be understood. That's just real life and you won't help your children from hiding it from them.

Cinderella's slipper fell off beacause it was beginning to transform back. The slipper didn't fit anyone else as the fairy god mother made the slipper change size to ensure it wouldn't fit any other maiden. The reason she couldn't allow cinderella extended time at the ball, is she isn't that powerful. The fairy god mother could have seen cinderella leave the ball under such circumstances and she could have focus the magic on all the other items into the slipper.

a pair of wood chopsticks only worth about 0.05$, if Pinocchio produce a wood stick per 10sec, 360*0.05 = 18$. you have to hire a worker to cut the wood, minimum wage in the United States is 7.25$ per hour, so you get 10.25$ in per hour, per month you get 2580$ if you hire two workers, you may not be "rich", but still a great amount a money.

Angry Italian here confronting the Disney movie with the actual italian novel by Collodi. Real pleasure island was a "paese", a village. No theme park, only a village managed by anarchist kids without schools. The kids had fun playing in the streets thanks the absence of authority figures. The problem is that in the movie it took only one night to transform children in donkeys. In the novel it took FIVE MONTHS. Less expenses, slower profits.

And no, jimminy cricket is straight up murdered, like...permanently, its meant to show how Pinocchio is killing his conscience so he can act as he pleases. And the book was written by a man who is quoted in saying he hates children and wanted to write a book warning them to stay in line, behave, and always do as they are told. And trust me, if you read the book, well.... That is what they do, the book has no happy endings, at all, like.... Its completely fucked.

I hate to poke holes in this because I LOVE your content, but your estimation methods in this one seemed...off. From everything to the selling price of donkeys to the cost of repairs, you used 2018 approximations and dialed back inflation. However, this is fundamentally flawed. Donkeys would have been more plentiful (and more useful) at the time and as such most likely were worth a lot more or a lot less. In addition, Ferris wheels today are so cheap because of low cost of materials and inexpensive production, while in the early 1900s I'm sure they were less common. Just a friendly reminder than inflation is not the ONLY thing that creates price differences over decades and decades. Great video though!
@trackernivrig6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah you're right! I didn't think of that.
@kindlin6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing lol. He kept the relative prices of everything equal, which just doesn't make any sense. The overall result could be similar if he both over and undershot, but that's unlikely. I basically just took this as a crazy trip down wtf-lane and let the maths be.
@thomasarnett99866 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, but it's really hard to get good records on enough of the items to warrant doing that, so estimating based on current prices and inflation is the next best thing. I'm sure it's within an order of magnitude, regardless.
@ArchangelUriel26 жыл бұрын
Also, he went with a RIDICULOUSLY high price for the park (and yes, I know he acknowledged this as the high-end, but even so, it's insanely high-end. We're talking beyond any reasonable expenses someone would have invested in the project) A much more reasonable comparison would have been for him to contrast the prices of something like Palace Playland at Old Orchard Beach, or hell, even their more expensive neighbor Aquaboggan, given that Palace Playland has virtually everything Pleasure Island has, short of the mansion to trash. Even Clark's Trading Post, in New Hampshire, would be a vastly saner comparison than the friggin' Diagon Alley.
@alexpotvin58196 жыл бұрын
The cost of gold would have been different also that bag of gold isn't a clump of cold there would be air in there. Love the content but knowing what MatPat has done before to get precise measurements this seems a little disappointing... you can't compare current examples to what things were a hundred years ago, this is the fundamental flaw in this theory. Definitely a super interesting theory though. I know MatPat is capable of doing way better!
@DarkenedSun12 жыл бұрын
Solid theory. 10 outta 10 and my husband (who loves this movie) adores this one and uses this video to show to friends. I'd only argue one thing though: the Coachman may not need to fix up Pleasure Island. Considering we don't see him eat the food on the island, but the boys do, it's probable that Pleasure Island is fae-owned. We have a fairy in this movie, what's to say there's more fairies? My personal headcanon is that the Coachman made a deal with fae, so they get kids and have fun with stealing them or turning them into donkeys, and the Coachman gets a ridiculous amount of money selling them. Makes this even more horrifying and I love it.

@vina67676 жыл бұрын
D. Laney Why..? ._. You would still be selling and making the same amount of donkeys, at around the same price, so unless yu started making MORE "donkeys" by kidnapping MORE kids. You wouldn't be making MORE money.
@KiwiNinjaBlast6 жыл бұрын
Nobody Important OP is pointing out the fact that the demand for donkeys would be higher, which would, in turn, raise the market price for the donkeys that the Coachman is selling.

11:15 You said $5 000 000 for a small rollercoaster, but according to Wikipedia, The Mindbender, a triple loop roller coaster only cost about $6 000 000 to build. It’s just something that’s been bothering me since you brought it up, I liked the rest of the video though.

Thexevilxwulfy well considering they're going to be work mules chances are they're going to die after a few years of being overworked. So probably the same people who use them for all kinds of physical labor carrying coal and transporting any other kinds of large heavy loads of good.

If they survive the boat journey. Once out at sea anything could happen to the boat/the kids. The boats could sink in a storm or if some of the kids could still talk the crew could dispatch them from causing trouble.

I believe MatPat mentioned that they were being used in salt mines at least at one point in the video. But, as some are saying, they could have many other applications.
