The best thing to come from the new Star Wars show The Mandalorian, so far, is Baby Yoda. The internet is OBSESSED with this little green alien. In Baby Yoda's first appearance, we are told it is 50 years old. WHAT? That made my Theorist brain go crazy! A 50 year old toddler is the worst evolutionary cycle I have ever seen or heard. Another thing of importance to point out here: we know for a fact that a massive war happened a thousand years ago, which wiped out a lot of Force-sensitive individuals within the Star Wars universe. If we include that, it starts looking like the war wiped out most of Yoda's species, and he was born after the war, to some of their last surviving members. Of course, that doesn't explain where baby Yoda came from, but it's possible they're just barely clinging on at the fringes of society. And then we need to consider the fact that the Empire actively hunted down Force sensitives and likely killed them. Yoda's people are so ancient and so long-lived they've probably experienced several of these extinction events, caused by conflict within the Jedi and the Sith, or between the two groups.

@A GIANT PAPAYA, while everyone in the comments is thinking about memes, I’m sitting here thinking about how humans won’t survive long enough to reach that level of evolution. Humans have certainly memory limits. If human memories don’t increase to compensate for the increased lifespan, the human brain would end up forcefully forgetting information. The brain would need to evolve first before the lifespan. To accommodate a bigger brain, the skull would need to get bigger, and this means people would need to grow more, requiring longer development periods and better nutrition. In this day and age, not enough people eat well enough to sustain a longer, healthy childhood that would allow for the development of a bigger skull. The brain, taking up so much energy, would also require good healthy habits. People of today don’t have the proper lifestyles to end up with that level of evolution any time soon. It would be quite a few millennia (in the very least) before humans are even ready to start increasing brain efficiency and size to the proper level for memory evolution needed for the tridactyl lifespan. And that’s what’s going through my head while everyone is memeing it up. This is why I understand that while humans are supposedly the smartest species on the planet, most humans are really not all that bright.

The “tridactyl” lifespan reminds me of the Zoras from BotW. The one difference being that by 60 they were mentally and emotionally mature enough to be interested in romantic pursuits, even though they physically still resemble small children (this is all explained in the side quest involving escorting the love letter safely down the river.) At about 100 years, their physical development is equivalent to approximately that of a human in their late teens. The overall lifespan is about the same as a tridactyl.

I feel like the lifespan is a significant aspect as well. To us, 50 years is a very long time, but considering Yoda lived nearly 1,000 years they likely perceive time differently than we do. A mayfly has a 24 hour lifespan. Assuming they had the intelligence to communicate with us and we told them that we didn't want to do something because we were only invited a week beforehand and that was too short notice, they'd think we were nuts. That's 7x the amount of time they live for, how could that not be enough time to plan something?

Worth noting, to quote him in Empire Strikes Back, "For 800 years have I trained Jedi". If he dies at 900 years of age, that means that by the time he was 100 years old, he would have at the very least finished his training, been granted the title of Jedi Knight, and gained his first Padawan. So unless there is a really weird period of rapid development, Yoda would have had about 50 years to go from diapers to Knight- which would indicate some rapid period of physical growth to pass Jedi Trials in the same amount of time it takes to still be a baby. I'm going to go with "massive plot oversight" that Star Wars is infamous for because apparently once they release a movie, they never watch it again to confirm details, or even just look up wookiepedia or a basic forum to close plot holes

Its actually not that unlikely look at ahsoka she becomes a padawan reletively young. And in humans we have massive growth spurts that take us from 4 feet to 7 in a matter of 3 years so its not unlikely for him to grow a foot in 50. My biggest irk here is that yodas species may not be mamalian but amphibian. Growing up in the water, and coming onto land when they develop arms and legs. Its a plausible explanation for being tridactle and grren. Tridacles are proven to have an easier time gripping folliage and other food inder water, and being green gives them a great camouflage in this universe your birth circumstances tribute greatly to your force sensitivity and the yoda has the greatest force sensitivity, it would make sense if they lived in, or were born in an area with a massive amount of life like an ocean, it could even explain the low numbers of yodians, we see in the movie the movies largely follow desert like terain, or forests with little water, why would an amphibian race want to be in these areas. Its likely that most never leave the oceans of their home planet choosing to stay and live happily in their own set biom, i mean in yodas final days he picks a swamp. And do you know what developes really quickly but had a relatively massive adult life span, amphibians. It makes less sense to view him from a mamalian perspective than and amphibian perspecivd.

he could have also became a jedi knight in like 3 years considering how insanely powerful baby yoda's force abilities are. The only reason he is considered a toddler is because he doesn't speak, but that could be because he's species evolved to use the force as a communication tool and therefore language itself is a barrier, hence why Yoda speaks so oddly. Baby yoda could be the equivalent of a 4/5 year old human at fifty. But just as humans that go through a HUGE change from 10-15 in comparison to their first 10 years, Yoda could go through a rapid growth from 50-100. By 70, he could be the equivalent of our 10 year old, and by 100, our 15 or maybe even 20 year old. Now i'm not saying George thought up of all this, but the mandalorian writers probably did.

Thats exactly what it is. Its mentioned somewhere in the extended star wars lore that yodas species is a pacifist people, which is why yoda never mentions the name of his home planet. In The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda says he has taught Jedi for 800 years. So between the age of 50 when he was still a toddler, to the age of 100 he managed to mature, be trained as a youngling, be a padawan learner, become a Jedi Knight, Master and trainer. Seems legit.

Yoda actually purposefully tried to keep his species hidden as to not bring them into the conflicts of the republic. For this reason, neither he nor Yaddle told anyone their species' name or home planet. Not even the Jedi order.
