Long Beach, CA. SO LOUD! They tend to fly just high enough that it's hard to see what they are, but that squawking is unmistakable.

That's very true! They are very smart birds. In New Zealand they built a refuge for Kakapos to save them from predators, but the Kakapos are so smart they keep escaping somehow.

There is a huge flock that live in the protected Orange Groves at California State University, Northridge. Not just Red-Crowned Parrots, but Cockatiels and Cockatoos as well. They have been there since I was little. They are super friendly, I used to study in the Orange Grove in college and they would eat out of my hand. Escapees from the pet trade and possibly when Busch Gardens closed in 1978.

I lived with my family in Key West, Florida in the early 1960’s. There were budgerigars (budgies, aka parakeets) living wild in the city. You would see them downtown by the cathedral especially. I caught one in my neighborhood by offering him birdseed in my hand. He was so hungry that he came to me. He had a band on his leg so my father called the only place in town that sold them so that I could return it. I was brokenhearted because we had one budgie as a family member. The store manager told my father that if I was talented enough to catch him, I deserved to keep him. He had a long life but I am disappointed that I can’t remember his name. I’m old! 😊

That’s amazing. They are so beautiful even if they are noisy. I live in Paris where we have not yet parrots but more parakeets each year. I watch them every morning and before dusk because they sleep in the Vincennes wood and they seem to love to spend their day in the Père Lachaise cemetery (i live next to it) where we have lots of exotic chestnut trees. No native birds like these exotic chestnuts but parakeets are mad about these fruits. I even saw parakeets next to my job in the middle of the city where there is no tree. Our climate is not a problem because it’s warmer than before. Winters are no more cold and summer are hotter each years. We know that our wild parakeets are from 3.000 to 6.000 and that they come from a group that escape one of our airport around the 70th. I love to watch the birds and we have lots of them in the green places of our city. If the song of the blackbird is the most beautiful in spring when i wake up, the flight of the parakeets above my balcony is a delight to my eyes.

I live in San Diego and Red-crown Parrots are the most numerous species among the ones we have as well. In addition to these Lilac-crowned and Yellow-headed are also present in San Diego. We have several species of Conures too along with a few Rose-ringed Parakeets. If you come to San Diego, go to Rob Field in the Oeach Beach neighborhood. They tend to congragate there especially in the evening but sometimes any time of day. They tend to commute between the coast and inland areas with Lindo Lake in Lakeside being a favorite inland spot. Most of these birds probably are descendant of escaped pets from owners here but there is also a pet trade in Tijuana and some of those escapes have moved north of the border. White-throated Magpie Jays and Northern Cardinals occur here in small numbers having been escaped or the offspring of TJ escapes.

The most outrageous thing I have seen is the yellow naped Amazon parrots living in the "Schlossgarten" park in Stuttgart, Germany. . . at least in the summer. In the winter when it gets quite cold and snowy, they move to trees in between tall apartment houses that shield them from the wind and eat the buds off the trees.

I've lived in Anaheim for 35 years, and we've recently had a flock of parrots move into a tree in our neighborhood, like within the last year. Originally they were just in Fullerton, as far as I knew. I had no idea about Pasadena or Los Angeles, I've rarely visited those cities. I've also had a really hard time seeing them, even though I hear them or flying overhead in sillouhette all the time. I really didn't know what they looked like until your video. At first I thought they were the colorful ones (red, yellow, green, blue) and then I thought they were just green, very interesting to know they have red on their heads. Thank you for looking so hard and for sharing!

Sun up and sundown every day they do a migration to and from their feeding and roosting areas. Wow you found a falcon in Pasadena? The story I heard was that I think with the red crown parrots, was that there was a fire at a pet store and they got out or someone freed them during that . This has been going on for at least 40 years. But the new species that are showing up are real recent.

@@brighteyedbirding no problem. The bird on the right at 3:46 and the topmost bird at 5:40 stand out as LCPA candidates based on limited red on the forehead and the characteristic lilac crown :). Additionally, the very first close-up parrot shown seems to have a faint yellow cheek patch, which may indicate a Red-crowned x Red-lored parrot hybrid. Hope this helps!

There are different types of parrots out here in California. Some are super small about the size of a sparrow. They were released after a fire in a Los Angeles pet store back in the 1990s. It was all over the news and someone caught the video as the birds were set free and went flying out. It was either let them burn or set them free. Not sure how easy it will be in finding the info yet I remember watching the news as it happened.

I have a film recommendation for you. The Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2009). I am more inclined to think these are the descendants of pet escapees or either purposefully or accidentally released pets. I really doubt that these birds migrated from Mexico or South America. These appear to be mostly Amazon parrots and conures. As a pet parrot "parent", yes, I can confirm they are very loud. Who thought such loud noises can come from these little guys? I live in So Cal and have sometimes seen and heard them fly overhead.
@brighteyedbirding
@brighteyedbirding 8 ай бұрын
Yay, I can't wait to check out the film! Yes, most likely they are descendants of pet escapees. I think people are hopeful that they are natural migrants, but there aren't a lot scholars that back that theory. Such loud creatures for their size haha!

The one that are in the trees by Hillview Middle School, Whittier CA are small and lime green in color. They are loud and fly into the trees at night to sleep and squak and then leave again in the morning. They crap all over our cars as they fly over our home to the trees in the school yard. I was told by neighbors as we watched them arrive, animal control said it's against the law to shoot at them, poison them or try to capture and sell them. Not sure where they come from, but they arrive every morning and night and that squawking noise is quiet loud. The flocks we have are probably between 300-400 or more parrots, arriving at the same time, into the trees. They blend into the trees quite well, you'll see the tree shake, here the noise, but the birds are hidden since they are the same color as the leaves. They are all lime green in color, with no other color on the top of their heads. I wish they would find a new home, that noise is deafening and makes me think of the movie "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock.
