I want to complement you on this video series, it is something that has been needed for a long time. Addressing the basics for all the new shooters is something that has been lacking for a while. There has been way too many Tactical Ted videos and not enough well thought out high quality beginners information.

the light gun segment reminded me of shooting a scandium frame snubby .357 magnum... felt like a hammer hitting my wrist with each shot.

Although geared toward handguns, this is an excellent video with a lot of good considerations and valuable info for the first time gun buyer.

Lots of great tips from 2 very experiened shooters. Maybe Ernest more for obvious reasons (if you know his background). Something I've noticed is...when people talk about "first gun" it's usually "singular". ONE gun. As mentioned what 's good at the range might not be for "carry" (as a civilian)....meaning civilians have choice vs a LEO or military man who's assigned guns)..or has to meet more requirements)). Compromises (as mentioned). There should be a "first gun" for "carry" and one for the range (which could also be for "home defence"). But most people are told to buy e.g. A Glock 19 as their first...one gun for everything. Plus, the chances are in a civilian engagement the distance will be so close (and sudden) that jsights wont even matter nor shoot-ability. As long as one can put rounds on the treat. In time. (....assuming it's a "fair fight" for a civilian e.g. one on one or at most 2....i'm sure it rarely would be the case....why I don't' believe in "carry" for civilians....unrealistic)....usually outnumbered/dont know the numbers/what they're armed with/caught off-guard)...

I think, the most important factor you might missed to discuss, is "how reliabily safe it is, to keep or carry hot" all day, everyday.

Generally, the advice in the video is mostly helpful for a potential shooter buying a gun. However, just the language being used would easily confuse someone new to firearms. A brand new shooter would have no idea what a red dot sight system is, let alone use it. Also, you advise off the cuff that the 9mm is the preferred option calibre to choose (possibly because it is the most popular). Yet, for a new shooter, the recoil can be quite daunting. I owned and shot an FN Browning Hi Power for many years, and I never really got comfortable with its "kick". I learned to work with it, but it kicked like a mule. Smaller guns than that kick even more. Now, to my mind, a much better option is the FN Five seveN, which is of similar size, but has a significantly lower kick (recoil), and is much easier to handle. Most critics of the Five seveN will tell you that the handle is too bulky for smaller hands, yet, at the range, such people find the gun much easier to shoot with than say a Beretta 92. The combination of light recoil and light weight make the Five seveN a real contender. Add in large magazine capacity, accuracy out to 100m, and reliability, then you have a really good package. For advanced shooters there may be better guns out there, but the Five seveN is still a good option. In terms of size, it's no bigger than a Beretta92 or a Glock19.

Might take this a step further and come up with a short list of first purchase firearms for smaller handed shooters to consider, keeping in mind that budget matters. New shooters oftentimes need guidance that's better than what their friends offer. For example, if hand strength is an issue, Beretta Tomcat's tip up barrel is a lot easier to load than cycling most slides.

Semi-automatics are nice, so are revolvers; especially if you encounter problems racking the pistol of a semi-automatic. Go to a range which rents guns and try them out before you buy.

Heavier by itself is not better. I owned a Sig P230 and it was very nice and also quite heavy. Had a horrible recoil for .380. Shit design. They werent really thinking about that stuff back in the good old days. They just assumed (like everyone did) that heavier is better. My Glock 42 weighs half as much and has considerably easier recoil. Still a .380. Better design. Gaston Glock was not a gun engineer and he saw things from a different perspective. We now have much better guns thanks to him.

Excellent video, guys! Suggestion: An introductory video is a great opportunity to inculcate safety into the minds of new shooters. I always take a second to do a safety check whenever I pick up a gun, even if it is sitting on the table with the action open, and even if I just checked it.

the lighting was great they dimmed the video in post production. i can tell by the pixels. and from having seen quite a few shoops in my life.
An addtion: don't leave out .38 special as a defensive caliber. Prior to the obsession with 9mm, police in the early 20th century carried 32 ACP, and and then moved to the 38, which is what my father was initially issued when he started policing. By the end of his career the 9mm had taken over post Miami-Dade and North Hollywood, but the 'detective special' has been a trusted weapon for those in harms way for a long time.
@Shorty_Lickens3 жыл бұрын
The reason the 9mm took over after the Miami incident is somebody finally sat down and did a serious analysis of gunfights and realized it was a better choice.

Just a note: Demonstrating a dark handgun against a dark shirt and/or a dark background makes it difficult for most viewers to be able to see what you are talking about clearly. Great discussion, poor visuals.

If you are new to guns, it is foolish to start with a centerfire handgun! Start with an affordable, pleasant to shoot rimfire handgun of your choice. Guns are not for everyone. You need to find out if you really like shooting guns. That will take time! A rimfire handgun is the easiest and most affordable way to find out if you really like to shoot guns. If you do decide that you want to go further, then you can start shopping for a centerfire handgun.
