These comments are wild. I am a 5 foot eight black woman with plenty of curves, big boobs and a big butt. I respect the country, especially when I’m down in Tokyo or Shibuya to the best of my abilities. Blame it on my Western mentality, but I never really tripped too much over what anybody really thought of me. I’ve always gotten along with both the men and women. I get my fair share of stares, as well as people wanting to talk to me and get to know about me. I was never offended by it. I’ve always found it odd that western women want east Asian women to change their ways. Honestly, if that’s the type of change they want it, they will get it themselves. They don’t need outsiders help. But everybody’s experiences are different just like not all Japanese men desire the traditional Japanese woman traits. Your confidence and how you carry yourself speaks volumes in the long run. Even if it doesn’t agree with whatever societal norm of the culture that you’re currently embracing.

While I am expecting to get some stares or some people not wanting anything to do with me, that's something I'm totally ok with, as I'm aware I won't fit in with their societal norms as a 6'3 kinda wonky guy. As long as anyone is respectful ahnd kind to others in how the general culture functions, little deviances from cultural norms are usually accepted I believe.

I found the comments from some of the women in this video against the Japanese woman kind of judgemental and gross. I went to Japan and I'm a bit larger and I was worried I'd be judged as I heard that curves are not appreciated but while people are definitely thinner, there are certainly many body types just like here, and many different clothing even if the clothing is modest. You don't have to wear wild clothes or revealing tops to be 'unique', your personality and self are more important. If people judged me then they kept it to themselves which is how it should be. The girl saying there is something wrong and they all look the same, I felt very angry at her comments, just judgemental and tearing people she does not understand down.

I just moved to Japan and I’m half Japanese and Caucasian. As a woman I’ve felt such a difference from living in America. I’ve always been into fashion and makeup but in Japan I feel like no matter where I go everyone is flawlessly beautiful even in 90 degrees. It doesn’t help that I’m 5”10 and don’t fit into most of the clothes here.

Nope I'm foreign from the UK and I live in Japan long term. I think the rest of the world needs to take the lead from Japan on this. A lot of countries could do with losing a lot of weight everyone in many western countries is unhealthily fat it's disgusting. More than 50% are damaging their health by being overweight in the UK and definitely the US. Western countries need more social pressure on things like that.

​@@jOeLwAlBy People in western countries are not just fat because of a lack of societal pressure but because of how their every day life looks compared to the Japanese every day life. In Japan, people still have a diet with mostly healthy food because it's easily accessible. In the US you have big companies competing with how much sugar and fat they can put into their products. "Just don't buy these products then" you might say, but that's not that easy when almost all products are spiked and the good ones are so expensive that poor people often can't afford them. Then we have transportation. In Japan people mostly take public transportation, something that overall barely exists in the US. So everyone drives with their cars, which means less walking around, less exercise. Countries like my own are trying to fight the fatness epidemic by banning foods that are too high in sugar and forcing companies to create better products. Also, public transportation like I said, is a huge factor too. Can kids drive with their bikes to school on roads that are not too dangerous or would they have to drive on a street with 6 lanes and fast driving cars? I can drive a bike to my work place, something that is almost unheard of in the US. It takes a decent government which invests into their society to keep people from getting fat and if your country doesn't have that then good night. Shaming people into dieting to stay thin works for a short time but is no long time solution and especially not for a whole society.

Finnish women have had issues with the unequal treatment of women vs men. Also the fact that women are expected to be a certain type, like acting very feminine and putting on lots of make-up. Oh! And Finnish families always split housework and childcare, but it's seen as strange in Japan (even when both parents work).

I tend to dress more comfortably and casually, but I don’t really dress revealing. Sure, I might wear shorts in the summer, but those shorts go right above my knee. So, I’m modest in the way I dress, but I also dress more casually and comfortably. I don’t wear skirts, i just wear pants and shorts. I wear T-shirts and hoodies, i don’t really dress formally, unless I’m going to church.

For me, i actually don't think anything special about how japanese people dress. I didn't think people dressed nicer than normal. I mean, i also lived in italy for 8 years and to me its normal to dress normally, but i live in Canada now and many people aren't dressed well here, mostly men though. So my standard for normal is northern Italian or more what you find in Ginza. In japan you can find many styles and fashion is very trendy in my opinion. I don't agree that everyone dresses the same. I did feel so much pressure to be thin in Japan and i was always on a diet in japan where i lived for 6 years. I feel this pressure everywhere, but more in japan. I often didn't eat. I didn't want to look different from everyone else. My self esteem was low and i was very shy and i wanted to fit in and look like the locals so i had to be super thin, but that's just how i felt, i put a lot of pressure on myself. So this was a me problem, not so much a Japan problem. Italy actually is one of the countries that are top rated for eating disorders, if not number 1. I'm not sure what Western means because every country is different. Italy is very different from germany and england for example. I think japan is an easy place to live for most northern italian women. I can't speak for every italian. Even in a country, everyone is different. I am like an old Japanese woman, i actually have an old Japanese woman inside me. I made friends with obasans in japan, we could understand each other, we had many things in common, and they were very kind.

I have a hormonal imbalance in my ovaries which put me in some medication to regulate my hormones but the side effect is some weight gain. I'm just 68kg for a 5'3" woman in her 30s and I felt like a whale during my last visit in Japan. I have some friends there and sometimes they asked me what happened to me and when I mentioned I got sick or something, the conversation goes awkwardly quiet followed by their apologies. I honestly feel so stressed about my looks in Japan vs in my home country. I'm down a few kgs now since I got my hormones almost regulated; partially thanks to Ozempic which I got prescription to. I still try to dress in a similar Japanese fashion every single time I go there especially I blend seamlessly there as an Asian woman.

@@KhrisAsaurus Japanse food is full of preservatives to the point it is not even funny anymore. I think it is as equally bad if not worse than the USA. It is really all down to portion sizes. When I studied in Japan for a year and got used to the small portions I never got fat again when I returned, and yes I still crave cheetos from time to time, I just can't eat to much of it anymore. Combine that with my new obsession with walking wherever I want and you get me never becoming fat whatever I eat.

To be fair most of the mentality in not only found in Japan but in other Asian countries as well. Remarks like weight, and salary is just to be expected and not necessarily meant to be as something bad. Kind of like one of the expected topics for a small talk especially when you reunite with an old acquaintance. Women being more put together in public is also common in some countries in Europe. Many western countries tend to be more sensitive is what I notice but it wasn’t always like that, we just became too comfortable and casual as a society. Also Japanese women preferring slender/thin bodies makes sense considering most Asians women tend to be shorter and if they do get any bigger it’s far more unhealthy at a faster rate compared to a taller person gaining some weight if you look into the BMI scale. It’s not necessarily a good or bad thing all I’m saying is that this mentality is not unique to Japan.

Another very good video and Miss Eri's last sentence summed it up well in my opinion. Women and men are different. It goes without saying that women should have the same rights as men. But to equate everything is very questionable (and wrong in my opinion). Look at the women's boxing matches at the Olympic Games. Or some parliaments. In Germany, a man who supposedly feels like a woman sits in the government and is thus taking away a (real) woman's opportunity to be involved in politics herself. And there was also an interview with a Japanese woman on another KZbin channel (NihonGo) and this woman said that many women are not interested in changing anything. Their topics are childish for western women, like an upcoming visit to Disneyland or which boy bands are better. But these are the things that Japanese women are interested in (certainly not all of them). Personally as someone more traditional I actually envy Japan's culture in a lot of ways. I don't think westerners really realize how backwards we have things these days. Not everything is perfect in Japan obviously, but in so far as work, family etc goes I think I like the stay at home mom dynamic much more. I do that in my own life here but tell that to any big city person and they'd probably look at you funny. I also admire the women's feminine energy a lot over there. You need to accept gender inequality, including lower incomes and career opportunities. 7) You need to speak both Japanese and American English well enough in addition to your own language and others that you are proficient in (The Japanese society does not care other major languages that you know). 8) Your work performances need to be better than Japanese men but you can remain humble. 9) You need to be very patient and mentally strong to survive being bullied and to thrive in your own way with self-respect. Basically you need to be proud of your own identity no matter what the society values. ******If you don’t want to face all of this criteria, find a Japanese man to get married with and let him be your shelter in this society while remaining an outcast!

Some good points here. Some not so much though. Also, I love that Japanese women dress so well. And I'm a guy who vastly prefer slender to curvy, so I love how slim Japanese women are. On top of that, Japan is the opposite of the west in that it's more acceptable to show skin on the lower half of the body, while showing skin on the upper half is often considered sexual. As such, you get tons of girls in mini skirts, which is heaven for me. So yeah, to me, Japanese girls are gorgeous, and it's one reason I love going there. I almost don't know where to look!
