This is a reason I wanted to stop antidepressants. Total emotional blunting and inability to FEEL emotions and the numbess was something I didn’t like. I would rather experience the full spectrum of emotions rather than feel like a walking zombie

I agree my friend. Whilst we often need some help to lift our mood or lower anxiety , for myself, l need to retain the ability to feel otherwise l cannot manage myself. Also, to be able to feel the good times too!

Purely anecdotal, but I think a lack of positive emotions can be just as bad for some as an excess of negative emotions. It’s hard to be motivated and get out and do things when you don’t get any emotional reward from doing them.

I think going from crying every single day to not being able to cry at all was a huge change for me, not one that I liked whatsoever. I would love to get help for my depression and anxiety but I would also love to be able to feel emotions and connect to people. I literally feel like I’m floating and less motivated on antidepressants than I was without them.

Bless you my friend, managing depression and anxiety is hard. Each of us need to work out if we need medications, and if so which ones work for us. Its a delicate balance and it is so important to research and to have a doctor who you can talk openly with.

I was on Sertraline for less than a week. Even on the lowest dose...I was a zombie. I couldn’t function. Meds hit me hard anyways. I tried Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro, Paxil without success. My depression is manageable despite two brain tumors however, the anxiety is a killer. My doc even tried combinations of different meds together...which my neuro doc said no to because of the tumors. Definitely not worth the risks. You are so awesome....I saw one of your videos as a suggestion and was hooked. You are like Grey’s Anatomy...you give all the feels...laughs, tears, happiness...Kudos to you for being so transparent and helping people with addiction, depression, anxiety, and LGBTQ. I am prescribed this same dosage and medication that you mentioned. I do a lot better and I don't get depressed for you often and it also helps with a bit of anxiety..... I like to be creative and I love to write and to top it off I started school taking psychology as the major. I feel numb and I don't like that all the time. I am very freaking happy that I don't feel depressed as much and then xiii level has gone down but in return I gave up my persona or my emotions. Am I some wack but once in a while if you're a creative person like I was but am not now since I started taking this medication...... If you're creative person or if you just want to feel emotions once in awhile better deep it would be great for me. So when you say you feel a 1000 times better but you can't cry then that is the trade off any V that's cool for you and is add she sort of OK for me personally or I wouldn't still be taking it .. That's OK.... I think about this would be I don't feel emotions deeply which is the idea from this drug...... so it works lol... I can't write anymore. I don't feel a motions the way I once did of which was the way I was creative.. So I can't write anything anymore unless it's non fiction when I try. My imagination has practically disappeared. My emotions such as sadness and Yup you guessed also depression that was making me and giving me the feelings are needed to have compassion and somehow sympathize member thighs were other people through writing characters. I've never been a big crier but I Cannae Room member of last time I shed a tear. Basically in a nutshell my personality is not my personality anymore if that makes any sense to you. People than I haven't seen for 2 or 3 years ask me where was wrong you're very quieter you're not you know this or that and I really don't have a legitimate answer for the guy or girl because I don't want to give them my entire medical record and diagnosis lol... So I know it sounds weird to you probably but it feels like it stole my persona. Vessel word to look up because it does not mean personality necessarily it's a very different thing it's these naturally motions that we have she is for one example so good check that went out. Do you feel like it is a good trade off that you can't cry or don't cry any longer and you don't feel emotions deeply because I personally was feeling deep emotions at extreme levels of being sad happy or whatever. That definitely does not take place any longer since I started this drug. So most people in my situation crew will write to create from their deepest emotions would say to hell with this or at least for a month or 2 because I need to fill emotions again even at those emotions hurt me is important that I feel like a human again and that can actually shed a tear or is not some half ass laugh that I give to people for show. I'm sorry this is so long but you are getting with a therapist would normally get since I won't be able to see M until after Christmas Hahaha. To tell you the truth I am on a break from a job and I'm using speech to text instead of typing because I can get a lot more out there if I just speak since I am on that break. So that would explain all the run on sentences and grammatical errors and those long long comment but please forgive me I normally don't do this and it may some crazy by the way but when you're using speech to text it's not nearly as long as typing regard us of how fast we are. English is my 2nd language thou learned it to so that's another reason you might see some messed up errors. Do you ever miss the emotions that are extreme? I'm pretty sure there might be a moment in your mind at times where you wonder why can't I fill certain things any longer? But also feel like at the end of the day you feel like it's a good trade off. You don't have to pression or in ciety or whatever else you retaking it for any longer but at the same time you said you can't cry and then means that you're like me you're a motional persona has disappeared but that's pretty much what the drug and drugs in his family were designed . Do you ever miss not feeling emotional? I realize is a crazy question but would you be willing to trade 3 days every month of filling total emotions good And the Negative? I would honestly say that I definitely miss not feeling things so strongly but like you I am definitely not having deep depression like I once did. So I'm going to end this the West started it and that would be had you feel about the fact of the matter which is you trade it off as I did your emotions that are human emotions when you started taking this drug? I'm not bashing you I might bimbaschi myself but what I am saying is do you ever feel like you would like to cry or you would light to fill a certain something just for an hour? A better question which is be straight to the point would you be willing to fill all your emotions for hours every day and then the rest of the time you're like you are now? You know it makes me depressed a little but only blue really when I just think about not feeling emotions so I'm gonna continue taking mine or plan to like you and we take the same amount of dosage but at the end of the day do you ever miss the lack of the ability to share a tear or have emotions that are extreme and yes that does include the negatives like anxiety and depression but do you ever miss not being able to fill the same empathy or sympathy when of thren is telling you a story fit back in the day you would have been crying over or are you were a been getting angry about to paying on the story? I say SSR I's absolutely steal Our very persona. Again look that word up even if you think you know the definitions for persona. It does not mean personality but is something much deeper and Finn you understand a little bit more what I'm saying is it's a trade off to are one of Phil lousy and depressed and nervous most of the time or if someone gives me a magic pill I don't feel that way any longer but I traded off all my emotions the majority of any kind of sympathy or empathy and I could probly West to satish freakin movie or the saddest song and feel like crying or shed a tear but it doesn't happen.

I experienced this with mirtazapine, I’m so glad you talked about this I didn’t think it was a real thing! It was horrible. Sometimes you need the release of being able to cry. It’s healthy. When you can’t it feels like a tension you can’t shift, like when you’re about to sneeze and then you can’t.
@FinnTheInfinncible
@FinnTheInfinncible 5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes it is exactly that! Just like a sneeze! Great analogy. I too had no idea that blunting existed, it was only after many failed attempts to cry, where I felt the emotion halted, that I searched online and found many similar experiences. It isnt just one type of medication that does it, although sertraline does often seem to be the biggest cause of it, people experience blunting on different meds. Its interesting how these things differ between people. I swapped to mirtazapine and it hasnt blunted me at all. We need GP's to be discussing this with patients more and helping people to find the right meds for them. I agree with you, that feeling is important. Yes I need the low mood addresses but not at the expense of feeling!

Anti depressants can and do help many people, however, for some people, some of these drugs have undesirable side effects. This was the case for me as I explain in this video, and with the support of my GP I have swapped to a different anti depressant. I stress in this vlog, that there is nothing wrong with taking medication, but I also stress that you need not put up with side effects, if the bad effects outweigh the good, then a doctor can help you to find a better medication

I was on these for a year. They helped with my depression to start with, but other side effects were terrible. The spaced out feelings were bad for me they highlighted my tinnitus even more, I was also questioning what life was all about every day along with a clouded sense of space and time. I went cold turkey a few weeks back, as I had ran out. Pretty bad brain zaps as mentioned but they seem to be getting better. Was getting some anger/anxiety spikes, but the obtrusive thoughts have gone, as is that tunnel like perception. I can feel the serotonin coming back to me as I feel great sometimes. I won’t be going near these things again, as I felt like a prisoner mentally. My lockdown had been going on since I started taking sertraline, and while I’m never going to be perfect I do feel that I’m free again.

I am on 200 mg for almost a year. I cannot cry, but I did cry when something happened and I felt so many things that they did come out with tears. But if I went to the past I would have done it again and sooner. I was living a nightmare and sleeping with nightmares. My emotional pain was always with me whatever I was doing. Even with friends I always felt like I was about to cry (I would blame it to allergies). I am healing but I feel already relieved. At first you will feel frustrated that you cannot cry, but day by day it takes the pain away until you will not feel the need to express sadness. You will actually be everyday mentally stable and your emotions won't be in your way to do the things that you want or be the person that you want to portray. I feel like my body accepts my soul now. Happy and sad events are felt but you will be emotional stable. The benefits for my case are more and more important for the quality of my life. Hope I helped

I didn’t even cry or feel sad about it either afterwards, I just cried once right when it happened, and then afterwards just felt this weird emotionally distanced and relieved feeling. So weird

I can COMPLETELY understand why you stopped sertraline. I was a walking zombie on it, it's a great medication, but I was so blunted as well, and also couldn't "perform" in bed at all, even alone (hope that's not TMI!) I HATED discontinuation syndrome, I don't like feeling those nasty brain zaps and horrid dissociation it made me feel. Once I got through that nasty bit (2 months later!) and it was amazing how it felt to FEEL again! I'm on clonazepam right now along with oxcarbazapine, and I KNOW if any Dr wanted to take me off these meds, I will need professional help to ween off these meds (more discontinuation syndrome stuff), but so far they are working best for me. I know, in hindsight, I needed a different medication at that time, and it was a good thing I stopped sertraline and tried a new one. I am actually glad I decided (just like you) to stop to face my mum's passing. I love you Finn

Best comment ever! Thank you so much, it warms my heart and makes me smile to know that I'm appreciated. It's also wonderful to be understood and to talk to people who have had similar experiences. I didn't talk about it in this vlog but yes, it also affected my sex life too. I found it so hard to reach climax on it and know that isn't uncommon. My emotions are still numbed but l can feel normality returning. I'm still settling into the new meds, mirtazapine, but so far they feel much less numbing. I'm also feeling my spirituality return and l hadn't noticed how disconnected from that l had felt until now almost feeling it return. Thank you so much for such a lovely message. Hi Finn - thanks for sharing this. I've been on Sertraline since about July 2020 and have been taking 50mg daily which has helped with my anxiety. A close family member is very unwell with Covid right now and sadly eteriorating but I'm also struggling to "feel" and get upset/cry about it...like I'm also numb. Reassuring that I'm not alone in experiencing this side effect. I'll speak to my GP and see how they can help :)

i was on Sertraline (100) along with Risperidone, Clonazepam and Topiramate in 2016 i dropped everything after like one year, i never felt ANY change, the ONLY thing that helped me was Risperidone with my Insomnia. I got back to therapy two months ago bcause i cant stand my tics anymore so i told my psychiatrist i only want to treat that problem and that i give up on the rest, she prescribed SERTRALINE (50) again, i have been on it for two weeks, i told her i feel no changes, and she said its NOT POSSIBLE NOT TO FEEL ANY CHANGE, she said that its the best medication and that everyone around the world take it and feel something, good or bad so i cant be the only one who doesnt notice any change, and now that i see your video i realized i dont cry at the things i always cry over anymore, NOTHING, not even one tear ?

Hi my friend, two weeks is a very short time, it can take a while for new medication to settle in. However, your doctor should also be listening to you, about what works best for you. Perhaps give the new meds a couple more weeks and if you dont feel right, then ask to change to something else. It is completely OK to advocate for what you need. We know ourselves better than anyone

Discontinuation syndrome, is that what it’s called? Horrible horrible horrible. Thankfully I’ve not had it much and only for a short time when I drop down a dose. Pain is healing, you’re right you have to feel the pain in order to get better and then you’ll just be left with the good memories. I’m grieving for my nephew who died recently from alcohol abuse. And I’m now also able to grieve for my Dad who died eleven years ago. Its so good to hear that other people go through the same things. (Not that I want you to feel pain obviously). Loads of love ❤️

It is so weird the first time you notice this symptom. I started with something similar to sertraline (fluoxetine, in my case) and I didn't think it was having an effect. I was still a little bit lethargic, unmotivated etc. But right on my 3rd day I was watching a movie and it had this very powerful and emotional scene. At that moment I noticed something was wrong. The "normal" me would be sobbing. I wasn't. I was rationally aware that the scene is sad, but I didn't felt it. After that I start experimenting. I opened movies that I knew it would make me cry normally. There is one in particular which I think I cried 100% of the time. Now? Totally dry. It is so weird. I can laugh, I know when something is sad... But I am not feeling it.

I had the great idea of just stopping mine after 2 years. No tapering. Its been horrible of course, but its been around 2 weeks. I almost forgot how strong my emotions were. 😫 Not gonna lie though the depression is really bad. Even before getting numbed by my medication, I was raised not to express negative emotions. So thats been bottled for 30 years. Even though it's been hell, I've had a clear enough head to examine things in my head. I've come to learn new things about myself. Some good. Some bad. Some that scare the hell out me. I really don't want to be numb anymore. Music, movies, and books are things I actually enjoy, but I never understood was I enjoyed the emotional connection with those things. When I'm numb I don't get the same thing from them. I don't know. Being numb kind of makes me feel like I'm not really alive. Ok I'm gonna stop typing now. I just saw how long this is lol.

@@sangeetalambh6389 To be honest I feel like that most of the time. Both before and after I stopped taking it. It may have gotten a little worse the first 2 weeks. I'm not sure. The hard part has been trying to mange the feelings when they came back. I don't know if they just seem stronger because I'm not use to dealing with them, or if repressing intense feelings with medication made them stronger. They've been kind of ruling me. It's getting a tiny bit easier, but it's been months. I don't really recommend it unless you have some kind of face to face support though. It can be rough and intense when you start to feel again. Online support groups really helped me not kill myself. If I had someone to give face to face support, it would have gone a lot better I think.

@@sangeetalambh6389 I've always had problems sleeping. The first two weeks, going through withdrawal from the medication, there were times my mind was racing and I couldn't sleep. Other times I was too mentally exhausted to stay awake. It settled down into my normal crappy sleep though lol. Like I said before, if you have real world support, you will be fine. Otherwise, if you do it alone, you kind of need a strong will to get through it. Personally, I had online support, but I can be very hard headed. Stubbornness got me through it by myself. There are definitely pros and cons. My head has some pretty dark thoughts all the time. Before it would just put me in a bad mood. Now it comes with a lot of negative emotions. My life sucks though lol. Just in general. Which is why the feelings I get from music are so important to me. Getting those feelings back are worth the negatives for me to be able to cry at the beauty of a lot of music. I cry about bad things too now, but I guess you can't have light without the dark. Definitely learn techniques to handle any panic attacks, and negative thoughts. It's hard, but I feel it's better than just being numb. I don't know what you are passionate about, but getting absorbed in it helps. I went pretty deep 8nto music. Learned some music theory, and the basics of some instruments. I could never perform in front of people. That's never really been the point for me though. I hope some of my rambling is helping in some way.

I couldn't agree more with using these meds when you are at a very low point where you need a bit of a boost to even be able to work on yourself and your problems, but once your head is above water again I suggest reducing or eliminating these meds as they can definitely cause emotion blunting (I experienced it first hand, not a fun time) and ultimately they shouldn't be relied on if you can avoid it anyway, go out of your way top find natural ways to lift your mood such as exercise and healthy eating as well as cutting out any unhealthy external things in your life such as toxic people. We all control our own well being for the most part so go out there and be happy guys

I agree that we should all look to improve our mood and wellbeing with other factors than medication, but medication can inturn, give us the strength we need, to be able to do the other stuff. When we are really low, its impossible to do the simple stuff like getting out of bed, let alone gettting some exercise. do you think it was the booze that caused your anxiety/depression ? i'm beginning to think that for many depression and anxiety is all linked to liver function, obviously drinking alcohol is going to effect this. Anecdotal but whenever i drink for a period of months (not all the time, but a few times a week) my depression and anxiety goes through the roof, not saying mental health issues are linked to liver function for everyone, but i reckon it accounts for a lot.

Its a good question, I have had anxiety for as long as I can remember, I started drinking because it helped, at least initially, to numb me to it, though of course eventually it made things far worse. When I got sober, my anxiety did lower, and Ive learned to manage it better now, But it is still there
@AlenzHSV8

Alcohol is a depressant, the more you drink and the longer you drink eventually it's going to make mild anxiety and depression far worse. Drinking to help lift your mood sounds great at the start.. but it will definitely spiral out of control and years down the road you will be much worse of mentally than what you were pre drinking days.

I found out I had a cyp2d6 poor metabolized phenotype, making a lot of antidepressants really harmful for me. For me Sertraline is the only SSRI on the market I can safely take lol. The brain freezes are very real. If you’ve ever been on Effexor just missing a dose can make them really bad. Coming off it was even harder! I too was sick of not being able to feel so I, stupidly, just stopped taking sertraline (100mg) rather than tapering. Though emotions are coming back (i stopped taking it a week ago as I wrote this). They’re very hard to deal with. The crying, almost being out of control of my emotions which isn’t great. I just can’t seem to find a balance.

How long it'll take sertraline will wears me off to back to normal? I just stopped taking the sertraline pills in two weeks ago. A weak? A month? A year?

I have just stopped taking sertraline for similar reasons. Not only could I not cry, I could not get upset, I could not get angry and on the other hand, I could not feel happy. I was just numb. Things happened where I should have been delighted. My Mrs told me we were expecting a baby. Her reaction to my reaction was 'You look very underwhelmed by it all'. When our daughter was born, I was all so matter of fact about it. 3 close relatives dropped dead around me all under 45 years old. I couldn't even pretend i felt upset, even though without sertraline I would be devastated. So i have stopped taking them after 4 years. Hopefully will be ok.

@@commonercoffeeaddict since I stopped taking Sertraline (I just went from 100mg to 0mg overnight) I have got some emotion and connection with people back. I am not completely indifferent to everything anymore, but I am not back to where I was before I needed them. Nothing excites me, nothing scares me, nothing motivates me. Things have started irritating me again (which I see as a step in the right direction) , when people get problems i do feel empathy for them now, when my favourite sports teams win, I am happy again... but i need more of my old self back. I started taking sertraline as I was in a job I hated, it was doing my head in and I would flip over the smallest thing. I was depressed and it was coming out in anger. I was very highly strung and would have started a fight in an empty house. So I have sertraline to thank for getting me out of that, I suppose. But now I've got rid of the cause of what was doing my head in, I am wondering where i go from here. I don't know how to go back to normal, I am just plodding on hoping it will all be ok

Just an update, 9 months on. I haven't touched any pills since. My emotions are back, but not as intense as pre-sertraline. My take on it is, you lose touch with what happiness is if you never feel sad. A bit like you would never appreciate a hot sunny day if it weren't for the cold and wind and rain. One thing I have found that has helped me a great deal is the Wim Hof Method. The breathing exercises. You feel great after them. Then there's the cold showers that give the brain a reset and kick all the negativity out and give you an endorfin rush. I recommend it for anyone suffering with depression, try it before you get on medication. It is free, has zero bad side effects, multiple health benefits and it strengthens your immune system. It's not a miracle cure, but it helps.

Paulhorn. Reduce medication to the lowest dose and then take alternate days and then taper off. Reduce negative thoughts to have a healthier life. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Stillness brings internal peace. Make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.
