Very nice. Stored indoors for 16 years and all it needed was a new impeller. Frankly I'm surprised the impeller fins were still intact. After all that time, you'd think they'd dry rot, crack and even break off. I had that happen to me actually. Boat sat for the winter, impeller started to get dry rotted without me knowing it....and I took it out the following season and the impeller got mangled after one trip. Overheat alarm came on during the 2nd trip out, took the boat in, looked at the impeller and water tube, and saw the impeller was missing two of it's fins lol. It was a eureka moment to be sure. To be fair, I should've checked the impeller before I even took the boat out, but I had started the motor on the muffs after changing the fluids, and I had water flow from the tell-tale so I figured it was good enough to test on the water. Lesson learned. Check the water pump/impeller often because you can still get water from the tell-tale on a completely ruined impeller...it'll just be wimpy stream. I love the old Johnson outboards. I had a Johnson 20HP that ran like a champ on a small jon boat for a number of years before I got into something bigger and bought a Mercury EFI.

I had a 30 johnson that would not pump with muffs. Asked mechanic how much for pump job. He said try putting it in a barrel and try. Pumped great and never had anymore problems. Why not on muffs, I'll never know

I'm new to all of this. I just put muffs on 1995 Evinrude 30 HP and ran it. Then I got the buzzer telling me that it was heating up. I shut it down pretty fast after that. Then I noticed water wasn't coming out of the top end of the motor. I turn the throttle pretty good to show my brother before the buzzer came on.. what if any damage do you think I just caused.

I know it’s been 2 years but your problem was just Probly the water line clogged. Can stick a clothes hanger in it to get it unclogged

Check your seals in the lower unit...should be no water in the gearcase after running it for a while...o-rings go bad with time - don't seal any more...

Wow...can't see how those impeller fins were so bent after only one use.
@adiboo81425 жыл бұрын
Well wouldn't they have been stuck in that bent position for those 16 years?
@davesmith27334 жыл бұрын
They are bent back in the housing and take that shape .I like to put new impeller at the start of each season .don't cost much and get a good flow all year

How long can you run the motor with it not pumping without damaging the motor?I was doing a tune-up and water was being pumped and as I adjusted the idle I saw the water no longer being pumped and was not sure for how long?May have been a few minutes.The engine was pretty hot .Since then have put in new impeller and now pumping water.
@champ_22337 жыл бұрын
it has to run pretty long and get pretty hot before it will do damage to the engine BUT if it does get too hot it can warp the cylinder head and cause a blown head gasket or even worse a cracked head but in your case if it only ran a few minuets without water i would rest assured there is no permanent damage, but if you notice your motor being weaker or not as much power as it used to have try picking up a cheap compression tester and checking each cylinder for good compression, there are plenty of good videos on how to use one, if one cylinder has bad compression its a good idea to bring it to the shop and have an expert look at it

Any tips for a 1988 9.9 4 stroke yamaha that's not getting spark?
@travisbaetz81735 жыл бұрын
After some more tinkering, found out it's the carb, not adjusted right, doesn't idle, apparently those mid-late 80s Yamaha's had a wonky carb, basically have to cover air intake with hand, Yamaha tried an automatic choke that didn't work so well.
