Hi mate, it's so good to see a young man in another country like America getting into early AC DC like you did. I was in primary school when that song came out and any Aussies my age will remember singing " it's a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll " , as kids that was an Australian snack. Bloody good video mate, full respect from Australia.

That's Mr. Bon Scott (RIP) doing the Lead Vocals and Bagpipes. I'm not 100%, but I think Bon and Angus and Malcolm Young were all originally from Scotland, and later relocated to Australia. This is a flatbed truck trundling it's way through the streets of Melbourne, Australia. Too cool for school! More AC/DC goodies: "Problem Child", "Jailbreak '74", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap". Rock On, and Happy New Year!

Also my mate was cousins with Bon, and he had those Bag pipes but died of an Aneurysm to the brain and this Chick stole them. My sister was in the crowd as this happened during her lunch break. She used to do highland dancing, and heard the sound of the bagpipes and rushed out of the store (Myers) to see the truck go by. They got into a lot of trouble for this because they didn't have a permit and started blocking traffic as people started following the truck along the streets right through the centre of the city. Bon used to be in a Pipe band as a drummer and a piper and it was his idea to use them in the song. Bon wrote the lyrics to their best songs such as Whole lotta Rosie which was about a fan of theirs who lived in Melbourne and would come to all their concerts. Bon wrote this song, Jailbreak, High Voltage. Dirty deeds, Big Balls, The Jack, Problem Child, Highway to hell, If you want blood, GImme a bullet, TNT, Let there be rock, Touch to much, Can I sit next to you girl, and one of my faves, Crabsody in blue as well as so many more. Bon had a way of making even the cleanest line sound dirty and the dirtiest line sound clean. He would grin at the crown like a devils cherub and you would be in the palm of his hand in a moment. I cried for hours when I hear he had died amd while Brian is good, the song writing, the lyrics just weren't the same and he didn't have Bon's cheeky charm. I have always said that there are only three singers who can scream in tune, Roger Daltrey (the Who), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Bon Scott.

This is an anthem of Australian music and the young brothers were responsible for some of the most iconic tunes of our generation…Malcom and Angus were front and forward, however, older brother George Young was responsible for the composition and flow of the music. George and Harry Vanda from the easy beats made AC/DC mesh and produce some of the best music…rock on dude!

Yes they were on a flat bed truck driving through the streets of Melbourne Australia recording live on that performance. No tricks on those days. The original lead singer of AC/DC was Bon Scott. Bon had a rawness and wildness to him that can’t be emulated by Brian Johnson. Bon was born in Angus, Scotland and both Malcolm and Angus Young were born in Glasgow, like fellow Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes (Cold Chisel frontman) and his older brother Swanee (ex Fraternity band member with Bob Scott pre AC/DC. Bon was a hard drinker and passed out in his car one night after a bender and choked on his own vomit - such a horrible way to die but he lived large and with few regrets. You should also check out Cold Chisel who are undoubtedly Australia’s best live band. Jimmy Barnes lead singer also has a formidable solo career and is adored by Aussies everywhere. He has one of the most powerful voices that can belt out in the high register than any rock voice in the world. It’s a soulful voice filled with emotion. powerful and raw.

This was Bon’s signature song and they’ve never played this live since his death. One of Bon’s friends was/is another Brit-born Australian known as John Farnham. You should check out his version recorded live in Melbourne with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. If you didn’t expect bagpipes then you really won’t expect to hear it with a symphony orchestra. Also, John Farnham also used bagpipes in one his biggest hits “You’re the Voice”.

The Young brothers emigrated to Australia from Scotland when they were little kids( presumably with their parents!). The bagpipes are a salute to their birthplace. The reason the brothers are also quite diminutive is because they were being slowly killed by the poisonous substances used in building materials in the tenement flats(apartments) which was their first home. Glad things got better, much better, when they got to Oz. They were known as '£10 poms' as that was all it cost to emigrate back in the 1950's-60's.

This is my hometown. Melbourne Australia. I was born in 68, and remember when Swanston Street looked like that, because you sure can't drive a flatbed truck down it any more. It's a car free zone for bicycles and the trams you can see in this clip. I also remember when this song was released. I had my Kmart transistor radio under my pillow when I was supposed to be asleep, listening to Melbourne's rock radio station..the legendary 3XY. I even knew the shop where they bought the bagpipes. I was learning to play guitar in the early 70's and dragged my Mum into there. A place on Elizabeth Street near the Myers entrance (as it was in those days and they had a sign up saying that they were the only place in Melbourne that sold pipes. According to the bass player, Cliff Williams, they bought the things, and got them back to the studio. They'd cost bout the price of decent second hand car ( maybe a year's salary for a labourer at the time) They asked Bon how to put them together and tune them. He said he had no fucking idea. They said "you were in a highland pipe band" and he said "yeah.....I was a drummer" What you can hear here is the whole band blowing on the drones, not connected to the bag. Bon is playing the chanter pipe....he'd been a recorder player in a very hippy folk band before ACDC. He later taught himself how to play bagpipes, with that original set, later on. They rarely performed it live because Bon like a cigarette, and pipers are hard to come by, even today.

The bagpipes were a suggestion by George Young (Angus and Malcolm's older brother and AC/DC co-producer) as he felt the song needed something extra. Bon had been in a pipe band, but played drums. Bon had played the recorder in the prog rock band Fraternity before joining AC/DC, so he got a set of pipes and through trial and error, got the melody here.

The Youngs did come from Scotland as boys and older brother George was in a band called the Easy beats and toured internationally . He became 1 half of Vanda and Young producers and managed AC/DC . The great Bon Scott was also from Scotland and had been in a few bands prior to this witch made him the old man in AC/DC . Bon wrote most of the lyrics and the Young boys the music and I can't tell you how much of an influence they had on Australia but it dose not matter how many times I hear their songs it sends chills up my spine and tears in my eyes because we lost 1 of the greats BON SCOTT after 5 or so albums . RIP

Hey Bro, this is definitely real. AC/DC were a very cheeky bunch of guys. Mid-70's Australia was coming out of its shell. Skyhooks were leading the charge in that department. Skyhooks had 6 songs from their debut album "LIving in the 70's" in 1974, banned from radio airplay. So the Government Radio Station JJ1540am played the entire album. Back to AC/DC, I had the surreal experience and immense thrilling pleasure of seeing Bon with AC/DC in the 70's at some outdoor gigs that were promoted by local Radio Stations. There were other great Aussie Bands on the Bill, like Hush, Stevie Wright, Finch, Buffalo, TMG, JPY, Dragon, Jon English, Kevin Borich, Richard Clapton, Rose Tattoo........... I can still see Bon's cheeky grin.............

This song has anthem status here in Australia & was the very first AC/DC song I ever heard… Thanks to my older brother… From at least half a street away from my house when I first heard it 🤘😜. The best way to enjoy AC/DC is at a volume loud enough to attract noise complaints from every house within a 1-block radius of your house in every direction 👍😆. Happy New Year everyone ✌️🥳🎆🎆🎆
