This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). "Son Of A Preacher Man" is her most famous song. But she had a lot of hits such as "Wishin' & Hopin'", "I Only Want To Be With You", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "I'll Try Anything", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

A lot of Americans thought she was a soul singer before they got to see her . The list of hits is very long . Any of her Best of albums with the songs in some sort of chrono order is best way to explore the discog. She even did a thing with the "Pet shop Boys in the later stages .

Dusty Springfield was an English singer who had signed with Atlantic Records. Her first album at Atlantic was "Dusty in Memphis" which included "Son of a Preacher Man". The song was originally intended for Aretha Franklin, and Aretha later released her own version. Fun fact - it was around that time that Dusty Springfield suggested to Atlantic Records that they should sign a newly formed band out of England called Led Zeppelin.

Dusty was a great singer, but she had a rival called Cilla Black and in the end Cilla became more successful. Both of them released their first singles in 1964.

This song comes from Dusty's 1969 album, Dusty in Memphis. The recording sessions were supervised by Jerry Wexler. Performing with Springfield were back-up singers the Sweet Inspirations and members of an informal group of American Sound Studios studio musicians known as the Memphis Boys, which included guitarist Reggie Young and bassist Tommy Cogbill. The songs for the album were written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Randy Newman, and Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This one, however, was written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins, actually with Aretha Franklin in mind.

Dude, how is this even possible?? I am so sad for your generation seriously And I’m so happy that I raised my son to listen to every kind of music we could find. I really think it’s truly important to educate our children because nobody else is going to educate them musically the way you can! I am so proud of my sons😢 open-mindedness and ability to appreciate musical genres. He doesn’t necessarily listen to, but can appreciate the talent and the skill and what it means. I will never forget sitting with him as a 15-year-old. It was almost Christmas and I think he was 13. He’d been playing the guitar for a couple years . And we watched “meet me in St. Louis” When Judy Garland started singing, have yourself a very little Christmas both of us had tears running down our cheeks. I think it clicked for him at that point. That just because it’s not a genre you listen to doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something to offer you. music is a gift and there’s so much of it! just cannot imagine not knowing who Dusty Springfield is. Dusty is magic.

Haha 🤣 How it’s possible! I have no idea! 🤷🏻♂️ I listened to mostly rap/hip-hop and progressive rock growing up! Just now venturing out and loving it!
@kellypickle2 ай бұрын
Well, I actually know how it’s possible. When we were growing up, we were forced to listen to music. We didn’t want to listen to. Nobody had headphones to turn off all the outside world. We didn’t scroll through millions of songs and decided which ones we liked!every once in a while an album got released and your brother‘s friend had it and he brought it over and if you liked it, you listen to that song on the radio and then you maybe went and bought the album and then maybe you went to a show or maybe your parents had albums . It’s probably not stuff you would listen to, but it was music so you played it. We were exposed to so much music. I swear to God, my stepdad was in the Navy and had John Phillips Souza albums. We listened to them now you won’t catch me listening to them today, but I did listen to them.

Ned from Spain saying I am so happy to see you digging Dusty ! Thanks Steve ! She was a massive 1960s icon and even had her own show. She was a UK superstar, and had a great feel for R n B / Soul as well as pop and ballads. Other masterpieces include " The Look of Love ", " What's it Gonna Be", " Stay Awhile", " Little by Little", " See All Her Faces ", the main thing was her battle to get the UK studio guys to play more like US Rock n Soul bands. The guys on this were The Memphis Boys and produced by the legendary Tom Dowd. The documentary " Tom Dowd and the Language of Music" is a must for you Steve. There's also a great one on Dusty too called " Definitely Dusty " ! She was amazing, groundbreaking but unfortunately gone too soon.

Dusty has kind of a weird story. A long time ago in the 60s some hippies came rolling through. They had a bus caravan and they were going to summertown Tennessee to start a farm. Dusty hooked up with them and went along. I was awfully young but I remember it was a big thing back then. We weren't used to having hippies in Tennessee.turns out they did settle in summertown and they do have a farm there to this day.I don't know how long she was with them. But she was for a while. Dusty Springfield has always been too cool

This song is mood-mover. If you ever knew any preachers' kids, you know how they can be. LOL (Just kidding). A point of interest, that "doubling" or over-dubbing was first done by Les Paul for his wife Mary Ford. Richard Carpenter used it a lot for Karen and in some ways improved upon on it.

Dusty was one of a great stable of female singers under EMI London - they were all amazing, however if you want to look into the studio musicians, you should start by Googling the named Vic Flick- he is the most famous unknown guitarist I know- played on hundreds of chart toping songs and movie themes and very few people know his name- BTW, Jimmie Page and Jeff Beck also did lots of studio work at EMI for others at the time - have fun!
