I've heard so many people ask what "that" is and I've never understood why it is so confusing. He literally says what "that" is in the song. "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no. No way. And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." "But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way, tonight. And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." "But I'll never do it better than I do with you, so long. So long. And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." Right before each iteration of "But I won't do that" he says exactly what it is he'll never do.

@@kirkhall2099 You can not "think so" all you want, but that doesn't change facts. Your personal experience with the song may have been that it was overplayed, but I never heard it on the radio once, unlike Paradise by the Dashboard Light, I Would Do Anything for Love, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad or Bat Out of Hell which I all heard many times. The only place I ever heard it, outside of my own CD collection, is on MTV a few times back when they used to actually play music. It is listed on iTunes as his 14th most popular song. I am also referring to how few people react to it on KZbin. Unlike his other popular songs it is very rarely reacted to.

There is a video of Meat Loaf explaining to people what "That" is because its confused so many people over the years. He says, "The that is whatever line comes before the chorus." So for example... "But I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life..." --- Then the chorus hits, so the thing he won't do is to stop dreaming of her. That's just one example. Another is "Sooner or later you'll be screwing around" followed by I won't do that. Anyway, that's just how Meat Loaf explained it, but even in that video... There are several comments from people still confused, so I think it is up to interpretation for the listener. Anyway, great reaction!! Meat Loaf will always be one of my favorites, so it was a lot of fun watching you react to this. Hopefully there will be more reactions to him to come!

@@dgpatter yeah, it's insane how many people don't get it, when it's literally stated in the song. These are the same people that didn't understand the finality of Lost, and thought they were all dead the whole time, when there was a speech by Christian that specifically explained how they weren't dead the whole time. 🤦♀️ Now, if you'd only listen to the song once, like these guys I'll give you a pass. I don't hear and absorb every lyric on my first listen of a song. But if you've heard this song more than once and you don't get, I'm afraid you're just a person that doesn't get things in general.

The female singer is Lorraine Crosby from Northern England, who was at the studio to record in her own right. I believe Meat's singer failed to turn up and she was asked to step in. Lorraine usually records under the name "Mrs Loud", and is a very underappreciated talent, she has performed often with another iconic British vocalist Bonnie Tyler, who had a series of hits in the US in the eighties. One of the biggest was "holding out for a hero".

The song's writer, Jim Steinman, called it a "Beauty And The Beast" kind of story. As for the meaning, he explained on his website: "What he 'won't do' is said about six times in the song very specifically. It's sort of is a little puzzle and I guess it goes by - but they're all great things. 'I won't stop doing beautiful things and I won't do bad things.' It's very noble. I'm very proud of that song because it's very much like out of the world of Excalibur. To me, it's like Sir Lancelot or something - very noble and chivalrous. That's my favorite song on the record - it's very ambitious." The album version runs 12:01, with the radio edit cut down to 5:13. The version in the video runs 7:41.

This song is a lithmus test for who actually listens to lyrics. It might take a couple of listens to listen past the magnificence of Meatloaf's vouce and the music to actually hear the lyrics. What he will and won't do for love is clearly stated in the preceding lines of each chorus.

"What happens is, I get this question all the time," Meat Loaf told VH1 Story Tellers in 1998. "I bet if I said, 'Do you have a question', people would raise their hand and they will ask me... 'What is that?' "Well, I'm here tonight to help you out," he continued, wheeling out a giant blackboard of the lyrics and illustrating the syntax with a pointy stick. "There are different lines every time, before every chorus," he explained. "I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight / I would do anything for love / But I won't do that. "I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life / I'll do anything for love / But I won't do that. "I'll never forget the way you feel right now / I will do anything for love / But I won't do... what?" The audience replied, in unison: "That!" "Do we understand it?" asked professor Loaf. "It's the line before every chorus. "In other words, you can insert your own line."

My interpretation of this song has always been along the lines of a man wishing to be loved. A hopeless romantic who keeps searching for that one love of their life, that special someone they wish to spend every day with. The phrase "I won't do that" is used to convey that he won't do what the other guys have done to the lady he's interested in, such as leave her for another or treat her like a one night stand. Personally, I feel this song is sort of an anthem to all the lonely guys out there who wish for love and not just a hookup, and who feel sort of like an ugly beast due to endless rejections.

@BARS & BARBELLS Keep in mind that Cinematic Music Videos like this one, especially from the 80's and 90's that spawned and fueled MTV, rarely had anything to do with the song being sung. They were there mostly to provide awesome visuals and a narrative story to go along with the song with the purposes of showcasing the song itself and making people remember song by remembering the video . Now that's not to say there aren't Music Videos that actually tell the story of the song, because there are, but by and large they don't. In fact another Music Video from the same era that, literally, had nothing to do with the song and only existed because it was awesome, showcased the song, and made people remember the song was "Total Eclipse of The Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. Now since you asked, this video had a Dual Narrative. The first and primary narrative was Loaf and Dana (the model who was the love interest). The story there is Loaf watching Dana from afar, afraid to approach her because of his appearance, and fleeing when he is noticed, leaving that ostentation pendant behind by accident. Dana finds the pendant and tracks Loaf down, eventually ending up in his lair, finding him, showing him true love, and the two disappear into the night. The secondary narrative is Loaf and The Police. If you'll remember, near the beginning of the video, Loaf crashes through a window while he's on his bike evading the police. When he does this, he snaps the cable holding a chandelier, dropping said chandelier on someone below (I think it was a cop, but I'm not certain). The entire Loaf and Police narrative is the Police chasing Loaf for murder. They never find him as Dana finds him first and the two disappear on Loaf's bike, leaving the ostentatious pendant behind, which the Police find. See? Just like said, Absolutely nothing to do with the song. But guess what? You'll remember this song now because you'll remember the video because it was THAT good. Mission Accomplished. 😜

However, both Jim and Meat loved her voice so they kept her vocals. The downside is Lorraine received no credits, royalties or awards for her part in this iconic track. So, "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is a slow bittersweet song. And also, "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth". Phil I guarantee that about 20 seconds in you will pause the video and say "What? ...I..what the???" LOL It's a crazy intro but a really great song!! 🤩🥰❤❤

One thing about this video that made it so visually stunning but is not well known is that it was directed by Michael Bay (Armageddon, Transformers, The Purge).

You've might have heard bits of this song in a Pepsi commercial a few years back. This song is more of the Shock rock or Rock Opera genre, however you find where it fits.

Its interesting seeing someone in your generation react to Meatloaf for the first time and refer to him as "theatrical" which right on point and where he cut his teeth. He played Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I see the video as a combination of Beauty & the Beast and Dracula (are those Dracula's brides writhing with the woman on the bed??!!). Awesome song, awesome reaction! 🙂

Yes, it's like the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with Wynona Rider, Keanu Reeve, and Gary Oldman.

Possibly my personal Meat Loaf song that never gets the attention it deserves is Wasted Youth. I’m not even sure if it ever got a video. But it’s worth looking into.

"That" is literally whatever he said before it. For example: "I'll never forget the way you feel right now" is said just before he says "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." In this case, "That" is he won't forget the way she feels.
