The Preacher died but before he did, he asked the hooker if she could see the promise land and he gave her his blood stained bible. The Preacher in the last verse was the son of the hooker, who survived. She apparently changed her life and raised her son in a Christian manner and he grew up to be a Preacher. It is a wonderful twist to the story and a very beautiful one.

This is one of his biggest hits! He is another artist who is immediately recognizable. My take is that perhaps she was already pregnant and that, along with this incident, gave her the strength to leave that life. In return, she was able to herself and her song the life they deserved. You can't lose with any Randy Travis song.

I think it's because the farmer, teacher, and preacher had already given something positive to the world and she hadn't yet so she was given another chance to do so which she ultimately did.

Its,a story about redemption.that bible saved that fallen ladies life,gave her faith,and spun her her on her heels so she got off the terrible path she was on.she went on to have a son who,because of the incredible gift she had been given,and subsequently passed on to him became a man of god himself and likely helped others find their path.god what a beautiful message.that's one of those songs I could listen to 1000 times and still feel the punch it packs
@Mark_MOORE_VFL Жыл бұрын
I don't think I would describe the song as upbeat it's a story of tragedy that something good came out of it. When the dieing preacher gave his Bible to the hooked who may have been a believer but turn her life back to god and raised her son to believe then he became a preacher who was telling the story from the beginning of the song that's the reason there wasn't 4 wooden crosses if there had been 4 who knows how his life would have been

So glad you did this one. Like you, I love love love story songs, and this is one of the best and with a great message to boot. Initially it makes people think that there are only 3 crosses because they didn't give one to the hooker...but then we find out that the hooker actually survived to raise her son, who became the preacher telling the story.

The song starts out talking about the passengers. "One was headed for vacation, one for higher education, and two of them were searching for lost souls." The preacher's final dying act was was to save a lost soul, fulfilling the song's message that what's important is what you leave behind you when you go.
