The craziest thing about that scream: Chester could do it live, and it was even crazier live than the studio version
@JupiterThndr Жыл бұрын
Also totally improvised. When Chester was recording the vocals for this song he didn't know how long to hold that note so held it for 17 seconds. Mike then said we are not touching that and they had to rearrange they rest of the song to keep it.

I never get tired of seeing people react to this song and that 17 second scream. One of the best songs to exhibit Chester's crazy vocal control. As some other fans have said, picking a "favorite" song is near impossible, but if I had to point to a few to recommend, I'd say Breaking the Habit, Castle of Glass, Catalyst, When They Come for Me, and Leave Out All the Rest.

Oh man, the reactions are always great. First people are jamming, head nodding with the beat. You can see them feeling the song. Then the eyes start to widen O.O as the scream goes on and on. They slowly stop jamming and everyone just goes slack jawed and they all just have to take a minute to truly come to terms with the amazingness of the scream and the realization that this song really came from deep inside and you feel both sad and awed at the same time. It's very powerful.

Faint is the song that I hold nearest. The words that are sung hit so near to me. It’s a mix of Mike and Chester.

I’ve been a massive LP for years, loving every step they’ve taken, including Fort Minor and everything Mike able to accomplish with it. But let me tell you, Faint has and forever will be my favorite track that LP has ever released. There’s a certain beautiful and almost methodical balance between rap, rock, screamo, nu-metal, and electronica that they built in that track that is absolute perfection.

Really enjoying your LINKIN PARK reactions and your personal insights into the meanings of the songs. As a longtime fan, it is worth mentioning the group's rapper, Mike Shinoda, was the lionshare of the creative force behind their lyrics. Most of their music is a collaborative group effort, so it just personally irks me when people attribute a lot of their songs to being Chester crying out for help when that was very rarely the case, even if he personally identified with many of the lyrics he sung. A couple noteworthy examples include Breaking the Habit, which IS about Chester's history with addiction, but was actually written by Mike Shinoda FOR him, as well as One More Light, which so many newer listeners interpret as a cry for help, when in fact it was originally written to mourn a close personal friend of the band's from their record label who helped get their foot in the door when they were first starting out. Obviously, now, the latter has taken on a new life as Chester's swan song. Nevertheless, it is important context for someone relatively new to the band. Looking forward to more LP reactions in the future! Some personal recommendations would be Iridescent (album version, not music video), Waiting for the End, Castle of Glass (music video version), Powerless, Final Masquerade, Talking to Myself, and Sorry for Now, to name a few. Mike Shinoda's solo album, Post-Traumatic, is also an incredible listen, as many of the songs are him working through his grief after Chester's passing.

One of the reasons that scream is so unique and so respected by anyone who does harsh vocals is because thats an actual scream. I know that sounds weird but for the most part when you are doing harsh vocals, you will go one of 2 paths; a falsechord or a fry. Falsechord engages the areas near your vocal cords, it utilizes more airflow, and is a louder noise. Make a grunting sound, engage your diaphram, and thata more or less all your doing to make that noise. A fry scream utilizes vocal fry, uses far less air, creates more distortion, and is generally quieter. Its sometimes referred to as whisper screaming because at the end of the day a fry scream is a loud whisper. Chesters voice was so unique that his falsechord could sound like a fry so it gets mixed between which is being urilized, however we know from recordings, live footage, interviews, and other analysis that 17 second scream for the first half is a true vocal fold scream and as he transfers to the lower tone, the falsechords engage. Thats his true voice for the first half which can be absolutely devastating to your voice. He does that, and righf after hits an intense high note for the final verse. No one ever has been or ever will be like chester bennington.

I had a chance to meet them in person and they were a riot LOL. Eyewitness firsthand Chester doing his scream and it was absolutely amazing. Anyone who is a true fan like I am would realize that none of their songs were ever happy or about great relationships they were all about digging and searching and finding themselves. It is so sad looking back and not seeing the signs of the pain he was actually going through. Growing up in Southern California I had a chance to meet and talk to a lot of musicians in my day. Most of us think because they have money and fame and all the things that go with it that they must be happy but obviously he was truly truly hurting so bad inside.
