My wife and I saw Tom Jones live in Las Vegas in 1973. Knowing he had one of the most powerful voices ever, we were blown away that he performed more than 30 songs during his two hour plus show, and yet he was just as powerful and clear at the end as was when he started. Truly was one the best performances we had ever seen from any singer. At the end, the ladies were flinging their bras, panties, and flowers onto the stage.

Growing up in the 90s and 00s, all I knew from Tom Jones, was "Sex Bomb", which I've always disliked. That, "Kiss" and a few other songs were basically the only songs of his I knew. Then I discovered this live performance about a year ago. I was stunned. Holy shit, the man could sing! And with such power. I also, only a year or two ago, realised how insane "The BeeGees" were. - Totally unrelated, but still. Only knew them from "Staying Alive"

He had his own TV show (1969-1971) and it was so amazing when he had guests on, (like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Shirley Bassey, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.), and would sing their own songs with them and outperform, out-soul, out-feel them. Fortunately for us, he's a LIVING legend. And, he can still bring it at 80+ years.

ya you totally get it, darling. like you said, the moment he starts singing he just radiates uncompromised masculine power and confidence, and you just know this is gonna be great. the way he attacks a note at full power and hits it pitch-perfect-- that is something many opera singers cannot do. many singers stand like they're giving a lecture, but tom jones has more of a fighter's stance, drawing power from the floor, bring it up to his diaphragm, and it rises from there flowing into all kinds of tonality and dynamic expression. he's an awesome ladies man and a consummate vocal artist the likes of which we will never see again

Billboard Magazine rated this as the 2nd greatest live performance of the 1960's ( behind The Righteous brothers Bobby Hatfield singing, ' Unchained Melody ' on the Andy Williams Show at # 1. ) Jones, like Bob by Hatfield was nicknamed, ' 1-take Tom ' because he always nailed it on the 1st take, whether it was in the studio or when he sang a song live like this that was being recorded. Btw, Jones NEVER had a vocal lesson. Keep in mind, in the 1960's, there was NO autotune. Jones killed it EVERY time he sang

They did an amazing duet. Peter Donegan was smart enough to let Tom do most of the singing and then sang harmony on the last. It was a wonderful musical moment.

You should react to Tom Jones and Janis Joplin singing her song Raise Your Hand from his TV show. It's incredible to hear them together!

Tom is 83 now and out on tour sounding amazing still. My dad listened to Tom and watched his TV show when I was little. I always knew of Tom and liked him but I've recently rediscovered him and I'm blown away by his amazing vocals. Legendary!

I was kind of familiar with Tom Jones; hits in the past and didn't care much for them. But this song, as it did to you, also blew me away!! Such a powerful voice and at the same time such a control, going from the high notes to his lower vocal range - AMAZING!!

Tom Jones was underrated for the day because of big names (The Beatles, etc.) that were popular at the same time. But his voice was truly one of the very best ever. Check out some of his other songs, like "Delilah", "Without Love", and "I Who Have Nothing" (you’ll be glad you did). You may want to also do some reaction videos on Engelbert Humperdinck, another gentleman with an incredible voice that was popular around the same time as Tom.

Well, he was hardly "underrated" 🙄 He was massively successful, had a string of big hits, had a very successful tv show, was widely respected and loved, etc...

He had to work in the shadow of Tom a bit but still a magnificent singer. Another , of course, was Frankie Vaughan.

The mighty king of the valleys is still semi-active in the business in his 80's and, while dented by age, his voice can still flatten a lot of the opposition.

Just a little short history. Tom Jones was a coal miner in Wales as a young man. On Saturday nights in the local town pub, Tom would be encouraged to sing all night for free beer. Someone (a talent scout) spotted him in the pub one night and suggested that he audition for a record company. He made 'It's Not Unusual' and a new star was born. In the late sixties he had a weekly variety show on BBC tv and it was the best show on the air. Today, in his eighties, Tom can still sing all of his hits and they sound just as good as they did years ago. A real artist!

@Chris Whyte ...Just a few corrections.... Tom's father was a coal miner, but Tom never worked in the mines. Tom contracted tuberculosis about the age of 11 or 12, and was confined at home for two years recovering. He wasn't supposed to sing or talk or go out to school or play with his friends during that time. He had regularly sung at school and chapel as a lad, and he loved to sing. It was always his dream to be a singer, but most youth there ended up becoming coal miners at a young age. However, the doctors made it very clear to his parents that Tom must never go to work in the mines. It would kill him. So, by 15 he was working odd jobs, but never did go down in the mines. Tom married at age 16, and with a baby on the way he went to work in construction, had a job in a glove factory, and also sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door to support his little family. But it still was his dream to be a singer, and sang most evenings and weekends in the workingmen's clubs and pubs. Tom eventually was heard by a musician and business man from London who's happened to be visiting family near where Tom was singing. That man realized Tom has an amazing voice and masculine appeal. He struck up a conversation with Tom and convinced Tom (and himself) that he could manage Tom's career. So Gordon Mills became Tom's manager and brought him to London. He also wrote the song that became Tom's big break, "It's Not Unusual."

When it comes to Tom Jones I’m still speechless! This is ur first seeing him, u know what it was like seeing him for the first time at 7 yrs old on ur bday. I’m just about 60 & I remember it like yesterday. It was all planned & I mainly was only child there, he sang couple songs & after he announced someone’s bday then he came straight over to me. He asked questions & I told him I was 7 he asked my dad something then he leaned over gave me a kiss on my lips & lol took a sip of my drink & sent more over then got up sang happy Birthday. After that he sang this song & green grass of home one of my favorites. He is a great person and artist. Have a lovely day and night Ciao

Thanks, Schnell. Tom Jones' vibrato and control is iconic. Ironically, I think the modern equivalent is Angelina Jordan -- like TJ, she sustains vibrato and focal fry from chest voice to head voice. This ability creates enormous emotional connection with the audience.

I'm sure you will be excited to know .......In 2006 Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His 2010 album Praise & Blame was a mix of gospel, blues, spirituals, and folk music and earned him stellar reviews, and his Spirit in the Room (2012)-covers of songs by musicians such as Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon-was also well received.

Tom was a headliner at one (maybe more than one) of the Las Vegas hotel casinos for many years. I remember his name in huge letters on a sign in front of the casino. I don't remember which property it was. I do recall he was known as one of the singers who often had room keys or intimate articles of women's clothing thrown to him on stage when he sang.

@Schnell Jordan - thank you very much for your reaction! I really love Tom Jones and have so many memories about his songs. Even more impressive is the blind audition of "the voice" in 2018 when Tom sang the song again with Peter, the son of Lonnie Donegan, who wrote this song for Tom Jones. Tom proves in the audition that he still does have his magic voice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4TSoZSqp5t0pac
