It's my karaoke song and I blew my younger brother's mind. He knew the song but that was the first time he actually paid attention to the lyrics. It is mind blowing and accurate even today. It is about empathy.

I still struggle to listen to this song, and my wife simply cannot do it. In 1999, we literally got woke up to hear the news, that her little brother had been killed by a drunk driver the night before. It took her years to be able to sleep with the lights off after that. This song came out kind of around that exact time, which is why that last verse hits us so hard. He was just 18, had just graduated high school, just bought a new truck, and was literally taken before he could make the first payment on it. Then, his “friends” took it to ride around in for a few days after the fact. I was shocked, actually I think we all were, when the Dodge dealership took it back and ate the loss themselves, as they had it moved multiple states away and sold as used. That way we would never see it driving down the road and have to deal with that. Crazy times when you’ve been married for just 3 years. It was hard, but I’m glad I could be there before, during, and after it for my wife and her family. It’s wild to think that was 25 years ago in August. She still struggles with his loss now from time to time. Anyway, be careful out there and try to never put your family in the position of going through the same thing! Your actions can destroy families, as it did hers.

I used to volunteer as an EMT. Every winter we would go around and try to get the homeless to go to the shelters. There was one we never bothered with. He was homeless by choice. He used to be a doctor, he got tired of all the red tape preventing him from helping people. So he quit his practice and moved to the street. That way, he could get to know the people that needed the help he hadn't been allowed to give. And they would trust him more, because a lot of them were veterans that didn't trust anyone from "the system." So, like the song says. Don't judge others. Instead, learn their story and get to know them.

My partner and I became homeless over course of ten years. I lost my great job after working there for ten years, I couldn't find another one. Eventually we moved in with my wife's parents and we were their live-in caretakers. I worked whatever jobs I could find and went to school to be a medical assistant. I had a nervous breakdown during my externship because my chronic pain made doing the work next to impossible. Her parents passed away during the Pandemic and we struggled to get assistance. Eventually we wound up living in our car for six months before my brother was able to take us in. And I know we're lucky compared to so many other people. Two or three times a week we drove past a homeless camp made of secondhand and homemade tents hiding in the woods when we'd go to the store and sell plasma. All it took for everything to go wrong was for me to get downsized from a job I thought I'd eventually retire from.

Truth. Regardless of what we each feel personally, it's hard to understand what someone is going through if you've never been through it. I don't expect someone that has never been through the abuse I went through to understand it. That doesn't mean I can't have empathy though for others and that's the real point of the song.

Knowing when this song was released really puts into perspective how far ahead of its time it was. Things like abortion, homelessness, "gangster life", whatever was taboo. This song is asking you to feel what it's like to live in their situation, to know nothing but that unfortunate life. And it was so well-received and popular, but yet we still seem to be so far from having this type of widespread empathy.

Regardless of your personal views on abortion (and everyone is obviously entitled to have an opinion) this song isn't about that. It's not about the morality or legality of abortion, or body autonomy. It's about being decent to people themselves, and not judging when you don't know what their circumstances may be. That's it. You can be against abortion and still acknowledge this.
