Storyline
Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed and co-produced by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. I put Frank Herbert right up there with Tolkien when it comes to world building. The novels he wrote for the Dune universe were rich with descriptors and every character and culture was so thoroughly fleshed out that the story pulled you in. You don't even notice the density of the text. As an aside, a friend of mine was an extra in the Lynch film for Dune. He played both a Fremen and a Harkonnen. We would always kid him about shooting himself as he ran across the dunes, every time the subject came up. Just one reason why I watched it several times. It's interesting seeing what different productions choose to focus on, and how designers for sets and costumes can interpret those rich details that Herbert included. I absolutely love what they've done with the visuals and sound design in this version.

Indeed. A Bene Gesserit has conscious control over every function in the body, even the autonomic functions. The development of sex characteristics, as with all development, are from the application of certain hormones in certain quantities at certain times during development. There is literally no such thing as an unwanted pregnancy in a Bene Gesserit. In one of the books, this control is described by the question, "Can you move your small toe independent of any other muscle?"

The spice must flow. In the book(s), those who can afford spice, which is pretty much only the wealthy, take it and use contact lenses to hide the blue eyes of their addiction. Most people take it for the health benefits (e.g. prolonged life, increased vitality, and improved awareness). The Bene Gesserit and Spacing Guild also take it for its ability to unlock prescience. But spice is highly addictive and withdrawal from it is usually fatal. Should spice become unavailable the entire system would crash.

Most of the desert scenes were filmed in Jordan. Apparently they had to construct over 100 miles of road to get to the various desert locations where filming was done.

There's also a TV miniseries version from 2000. Low production quality overall, but they made up for it by doing it like a stage play. Ian McNeice in the role that Stellan Skarsgard plays here. It was clearly a labor of love, so I always recommend it to people who like the current movies.

I’d also recommend the sequel miniseries Children of Dune based on Herbert’s second two books Messiah and Children of Dune. James McAvoy’s performance is the standout. First thing I saw him in and made quite an impression.

@@jentoby73 Absolutely. Folks who just finished the current movie who don't want to wait years for the next one can watch the Children of Dune miniseries as a direct sequel. They'd just have to get used to the different cast and CD-ROM era effects. But it achieves some amazing results with score and acting.

When Paul is exposed to the spice in the desert and kneels down in the sand and says, "I recognize your footsteps, old man...", it's meant as a double entendre, but which isn't as clear unless you've read or are aware of the books; it of course is meant to literally refer to Gurney coming up behind him, but Fremen call the worm "the old man of the desert", so when Paul says he recognizes its "footsteps" (the worm approaching) it's meant to represent that he has some transcendent affinity with the worms due to his role in and prescience about what is to come.

Basically impossible to kill someone fast if you hit in lower back, Jamis would have been suffering

We do not see where Paul strikes Jamis, or the angle the blade enters, only that it is from behind. A wound to the liver or heart (up through the ribs) would be fatal, with loss of consciousness from shock/bloodloss.

(for historical reasons - leaving your thinking to a machine makes you a slave to whoever controls it) That's why the duke has an assistant trained from birth to be an autistic genius, serving as a living calculator - they just don't use advanced computers. But making a precise hyperspace jump requires calculations no human could do - so instead they use a "navigator", a man who spends his whole life so high on spice, he can see a bit into the future and guide the ship safely. The navigators' guild is one of the most influential forces in the universe.

The Emperor's role in the Harkonnen attack is kept the deepest of state secrets. In the book the Sardaukar (the Emperor's troops) deploy wearing Harkonnen uniforms. The movie has them attack in their own uniforms for audience understanding. The Imperium is a feudal society, so you're not wrong that their style of war is old school. These armies aren't really soldiers, they're warrior-cults attached to a single person or family.

@@RyanCarrington For my real comment though: Dune was long considered to be essentially "unfilmable". Similarly to Lord of the Rings, it's an incredibly DENSE series of books that build out the entire world over the course of a LOT of words. Equally similar, both the LOTR adaptation and this Dune adaptation succeeded by effectively choosing what material to leave in and leave out. With Dune, a lot of stuff is alluded to that makes sense if you've read the book, but is very unclear to a layman. One example is homeboy rolling his eyes back into his head when he's doing some calculations early on, which you commented on. In this future, humanity has outlawed "thinking machines" beyond a certain capability (because lol AI wars, like always), and as such has pushed the absolute limits of human capability, utilizing genetic lineages and extreme training in order to push the human mind to be capable of doing such extreme processing. So, when my guys eyes roll back, he's accessing that part of himself that's capable of the high processing power in order to come up with a calculation. It's part of why things are also so feudal. When you need an absolute extreme specialist for every little task that computers do, it just makes more sense to have "a guy" for everything, which melds nicely into a feudal heirarchy.

Paul - means "small". Paul in the Bible was a convert to Christianity who then devoted himself to converting as many people as possible and setting up communities of worship and interpreting the teaching of Jesus. He was instrumental in spreading Christianity. Maybe a bit like Paul spreads the Fremen way of life? St Paul is often considered the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity.

Might I say, loved your reaction.For your information, a detail, the Baron floats , Duncan is a supreme fighter, the Sadaukar drop perfectly. These are all due to suspensor belts they wear, you'll see red lights along their back. Read the books. So much background information. This is one of so many details you are missing. Funny that you should mention The Matrix, as the Matrix trilogy is (with no spoilers) very similar in plot beats to the first two Dune books. It was basically a cyberpunk adaptation of Dune and Dune Messiah.

My guess is the main obstacle to adapting this saga isn't the special effects technology but rather the strong poliical themes running throughout. There is a lot to keep track of and communicate when you can't peer into the thoughts of every character like in a novel.

Gotta pay attention to little things in this movie. Like when Paul says he recognizes Gurney's footsteps and the scene where they fight and Paul going for the killing blow to the neck would have gotten him stabbed in the torso. Edit: There are many payoffs in part 2. Watch this one again, then immediately start part 2. It picks up like an hour after part 1.

The original movie was adapted a bit for the big screen so there are differences from this one that follows the book much more closely. You should watch the original, it was amazing to us back in the 80s and still one of my top sci-fi movies. And to the Editor, that overlay of the cat with the chanting cracked me up. Well done.

If you like to read, I can't recommend the book(s) highly enough. If reading isn't your thing then check out some of the YT videos about Dune. *SO* much had to be left out of the movie and knowing what that stuff is will only help you understand the Dune universe, which is complex and highly developed. Quinn's Ideas puts out the best and most in-depth Dune content, imo. Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians are also good channels for learning about Dune. You'll learn about the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, Mentats, Paul's sister Alia, the life cycle of the worms and the Water of Life, the Fremen, the ban on technology, Suk doctors and their training, and so, so much more.

In case no one covers this in the comments...on rewatching these movies, every time you make an assumption about why someone is doing or saying anything, you're probably at least partially right...but it's all more nuanced than that. I highly recommend the book, as you'll gain so much from it. But not everyone's into reading 600 page dense novels. The movies do a pretty good job of portraying it, but it's so layered that it will take several viewings to really grasp it all. But it's a hell of a fun journey!

Nice pickup on the similarities to Blade Runner 2049, it is the same director. And Denis Villeneuve does as much as he can for real, so the majority this film is practical. And even more so in Part 2! After reading Dune it was his dream to make it since he was a teenager, so he really put his heart and soul into this story, and I think it shows. From the cinematography and editing, to sound design and music, to the casting and incredible acting, this is by far one of the best sci-fi series ever put to film.

There are 2 previous versions of Dune. The 1984 David Lynch (worth a watch because it's insane, look for the spicediver edit) and the 2000s SciFi miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune (the most book accurate - 4.5hr total runtime). If you can forgive the terrible CGI of the miniseries, it is the most faithful to Frank's work.

The seemingly ordinary names result from people clinging to their terrestrial heritage. This also explains the bagpipes and the speaking of English. The name Atreides derives from the house of Atreus in Greek mythology.

Paul the apostle. Paul is not a modern name it's ancient n the aredies in dune the family is Greek n traces their ancestry to King Agamemnon who took Troy. That's in the book but no backstory is given in the film.

Dune part one n dune part 2 adapts the first dune novel while the David Lynch one adapts the whole book as one movie. Better watch part 2 before Lynch's dune otherwise U spoil the ending n plot points for part 2. So watch part 2 then the 1984 film also in 2000 the Syfy channel adapts the first dune novel into a 3 part miniseries should check that out too. The first dune novel was written in 1965.

Tbh, I didn't even see dune 2 in there. I just saw complimentary colours and liked how they pop against eachother. I did make this right before I caught Dune 2, though.

"That's annoying me... I did not see that coming!" Unfortunately, Dr Kynes death is wasted in this version. In the book, Kynes is released in the deep desert with no stillsuit and dies in a spice blow (Herbert uses the death of an ecologist/planetologist to show the reader part of the worm life cycle) and it comes back around with Chani (who is Kynes' daughter in the book) and how the Baron is dealt with. All of that is lost here, for... another worm scene 😒

Don’t bother watching the old one. It has some style, but the story was told poorly and the writers and director inserted some ridiculous made up nonsense.

I disagree. Yes, they added some stuff, and changed the ending, but in many ways it's more faithful to the book than Villeneuve's versions. The exposition that Villeneuve hates so much really does help explain some things in more detail, and the voiceover narration partially translates the book's writing style which is constantly telling you the internal monologue of all the characters.

Huge L, dude. The production design is so incredible. In a lot of ways it’s not a great adaptation, but it’s a fascinating movie and well worth watching for someone who is interested in that sort of thing.
