At the beginning it mentions real (tv type) shows that were popular nationally, when there were ONLY radios and NO TV. Before my time of course!! 😆😋😉

Sitting watching this performance with a huge grin and the hairs on the back of my neck standing up as I remember being in that crowd totally mesmerised by Freddie and the guys.. I've seen Queen 4 times, 3 of which were huge venues, Live Aid, Berlin and Brazil, but still remember the first time at the Marquee in London 1973 with about 400 people, knowing I was in the presence of greatness, but not realising just how much they would mean to hundreds of millions around the world.. I have to thank my uncle for getting the tickets for my 13th birthday.. To this day, the best present anyone has ever given me.. What a legacy Freddie has left..

Hi, Tolly I think we had quite similar experiences. I think saw Queen half a dozen time at various venues but the first was at Barberella’s, a night club in Birmingham. The first album had only just been released (I still rate it as their best) and Queen were pretty much unknowns. I think I paid eighty or ninety pence on the door. One of the best concerts I ever went to. Not bad for less than a quid! I can’t watch videos of Freddie performing without feeling a huge rush and having a big daft grin on my face.

Ah, I love all of you. Thank you for cheering them on when those of us born in the wrong era wish so badly we could do the same. I’ve loved Freddie ever since I was a teenager, and bought the Live Aid dvd art back in high school. I used to watch it all the time, and I’ll never forget when I first got to Queen’s performances. The feeling I get when seeing Freddie on stage is one that no other performer has given me. He sets my soul on fire.

I started watching the live coverage on MTV that day about 10am and finally was rewarded with Queen that early evening. Waited all day for them!

Freddie had strut and swagger, absolute confidence that he was the best frontman the world has ever seen. Queen’s afternoon slot at Live Aid was because the organisers thought they were has-beens, not a headlining band. Queen knew better and in 20 minutes took over the show and the billions watching on TV.

I keep reading comments on here from posters themselves either alluding to or suggesting from others that they thought Queen were has-beens but I can only think that it's American posters saying that, considering they were in their prime in the UK at the time of this performance. The clue being that if they actually were has-beens then it's very unlikely that they would have been on the list of performers to begin with.

Rock was dead, killed by disco. Disco killed by punk. Punk killed by the New Romantics. Queen were an exception in being a rock band who regularly released singles, but they were outnumbered on Radio 1 and Top Of The Pops. A whole generation didn’t hear Pink Floyd until Another Brick In The Wall was released as a single. They didn’t hear Led Zep at all, despite hearing A Whole Lotta Love every week during the Top Of The Pops intro sequence. Rock was dead. It dies on a regular basis. The perception of Queen as has-beens is easy to support if you were watching Top Of The Pops and believing that was what was all there was. Then Live Aid happened. Queen said yes to it - a lot of big names didn’t - and the rest is history. 82,000 Queen fans filed out of Wembley Stadium that night, and many more filed in the following year when Queen took it over for consecutive nights. And by then they also had A Kind Of Magic, and the feature length rock video Highlander. Rock is dead (again), we’re told. This time the dinosaurs have been seen off by hip-hop. The irony being that it’s hip hop fans who seem to be promoting rock to a wider audience. Queen’s performance at Live Aid gets the same Wow! now as it did then. Wait for the reactions to the new material that was released years after Freddie’s death. Dead, but the show goes on. Unless the show is Top Of The Pops. Rock has survived its nemesis. UFO are calling it a day in 2019. Phil Mogg has said that after 50 years he’s going to retire. They probably got little to no mainstream air time despite Strangers In The Night being one of the greatest live albums ever released. That lies waiting to be rediscovered.

Joey, so glad you watched this! If you haven't watched the entire 26 minute Live Aid set by Queen, it's a must. Many industry experts and fans rate this as the best live rock performance ever. It's iconic, historic. This performance at Live Aid revived Queen's career; and although there were many great acts that day on both the London and Philadelphia stages, it's Queen's appearance that defines Live Aid to this day. We lost Freddie six years later, but he'll live forever because of his outstanding talent.

You gotta understand that this gig was the biggest event in music history at that time and hasn't ever been equalled. It was woodstock times a thousand. There were simultaneous concerts going on both in London and New York. (edit Philadelphia, not New York.) The lineup included the greatest, most popular, artists of the day. It was watched live around the globe by an estimated 1.3 billion people and Freddie...he blew everyone away. Queen came on and put on hands down the greatest live performance of all time and they did it whilst a quarter of the world was watching. This performance made Queen into legends.

There is No Other voice that can be compared to Freddie Mercury's voice the man had the widest range and strongest vocals of anyone then or since. He was the greatest male singer of all time. Thank God I lived through these wonderful times. Freddie Mercury died on Nov 24 1991. 27 years ago ! Damn it doesn't seem that long ago. Freddie you are truly missed by this Queen fan.

I was 17 years old and four rows back from the front that day ! The best day of my life and always will be. I’m 51 years old now and I still haven’t felt the way I did that day ever again. I sobbed for weeks literally, the day Freddie died, I don’t think I’ve ever got over it to be honest. The world lost the greatest singer, showman and decent human being the day Freddie left us. Life was never the same for me again. I met him several times and he always remembered me and my name too. He was a people person and an outstanding man. I was at the Live aid show in Philly and I can honestly say that Queen stole the show that day and that was two stadiums and I cannot tell you how many artist played that day. Led Zepplin was expected to steal the show that day because they were reuniting for the concert, but no it was Queen that really stole the show. IT WAS AWESOME!!!

Freddie sang that day against his Dr's advice. He had a throat infection. Queen stole the show that day. When they committed to doing Live Aid, the guys got together, put together their song list and practiced to make sure they made the time limit and yet satisfied their fans. It's said that this performance gave the band a new lease on life. They had been having difficultites.

I still get chills with that performance and its years since I saw Live Aid on TV. Charisma you could surf off, perfect vocals and instant rapport with an audience there to see not just them. The ultimate front man.

If you are going to listen to an early Queen album, I find Queen 2 the more immersive experience. The tracks flow beautifully and there is a lot of storytelling in the lyrics. I love White Queen, instrumentally and lyrically it ebbs and flows as the story plays out. Also, I am reading a Freddie biography at the moment. Most artists only did the one dress rehearsal the day before. Queen rented a sound stage for a week to make sure they were ready for it and were perfect. From what I have read, he was a perfectionist. He also realised that this crowd wasn't just the people in the stadium, it was everyone watching around the world too. They had to put on a great show. They had been out of the country when the live aid Christmas single had been recorded the year before, so wanted to make a huge impression at the concert.

I heard an interview with Brian May (guitarist) that said that Freddie had the sound engineers turn up the sound when they came on so that was great AND he wanted to have that 6:30 time slot so that it was on prime TV in the U.S. Queen definitely knew how to run their business!

I recorded the whole Live Aid concert on videotape & still have it. Back in 1975, when I was 16, I saw Queen as a 'mystery band' at a club on a Tuesday night. Only 200 people there & they played for over 2 hours. It was a 'warm up' for a European tour. The curtains on the stage at the club were never, ever closed, but were on that night, imagine the reaction when Freddy Mercury stuck his head out of the curtain. I was 17 & still at school & nobody would believe who we had seen ….. until they read the local newspaper complete with a press photo of Queen and my 3 mates & me on the front page.

I'd love for you to react to any Leonard Cohen song, that man was a brilliant poet with some very classic stuff as WELL as some funky stuff. He's like, the artist for artists, most people dont know him but those who do love him. He wrote the song Hallelujah, which you've probably heard a ton of covers of. His original version is very different than most covers though, id love to see what you think.

Freddie was in his prime this day , he the best he ever was , i think he sounds better live than in a studio he was at home on the stage , i honestly dont think there is a better live performance that this whole live aid set , and thank bob geldof for doing it or we never would have had this perfection on film. R.I.P FREDDIE , oh p.s joey a little freddie fact , did you know he left pretty much everything to his first wife? His home , the rights to his music , and most of his millions , he only left his partner half a million and a plot of land , he gave strict instructions the his exwife to never reveal were his remains are , he said he wanted to rest in peace , (strange for a man who loved the spotlight) He said when he was dying , she was his 1 and only true friend and soulmate.

Actually they were not married. Mary was his first long time girlfriend (at the time Freddie thought himself to be bisexual tho Mary had an idea he wasn't really). Anyway, he really loved her, she was with him way before he became famous and when they ended (as Freddie realised he was actually gay) she stayed best friends with him. He turned to her for advice and help. Their relationship was that of true soulmates, just not sexually. Yes he left her nearly everything and that speaks to the character of Mary and how much he truly loved her, and she loved him.
