The first time I ever heard the song, I was going into my freshman year of high school. That was in 1975. I can honestly say that since then, I have heard the song thousands of times. I can also honestly say that every time I hear it, it's like hearing it for the first time. That's the essence and power of good music. Rather than envy, I feel sorry for those who have never taken the time or had the opportunity to listen to the song for the first time.

My first response was "How can any adult who's into music not know Queen?" and then I remembered that generational differences leave gaps in such knowledge. But then I began to listen to it with him and tried to listen like it was my first time, too. Damn, I am thrilled every time!!! Frankly, I envy anyone who doesn't know their music because they get to discover it!

I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this song. I was taking the last ride around the circuit downtown, on my way home. I was across from Wilson's hamburgers and it came on. I was like, what the hell is this, but it was pure love from the first word.

My Dad gave me an old dusty Queen cassette tape at the ripe age of 11 "Here," he said "I don't listen to this anymore. You and your brothers can have it" . A Kind of Magic, it was the first time my ears had ever had the pleasure of Freddie Mercury' amazing vocals and range. Now... my ears require it. Hands down the greatest male vocalist of all time imo.

You guys who are in such disbelief that he's never listened to Queen have never grown up in a black neighborhood. I guarantee you if he grew up in a neighborhood like mine, they weren't playing Queen. I didn't discover it until I moved to the suburbs in my late teen years, so I get it. The point is he knows who Queen is now and he likes them.

Of course growing up in the 70's I heard this song a million times, but watching this I was thinking, this is something that it's possible for a young black guy to relate to, meaning the lyrics. It seemed like the middle part of the song made him very uncomfortable. It made me think.

I was 10 when I first heard this song. It was 1992 at the movie theater watching Wayne's World. I kept asking my mom after the movie what was that song the were driving too? She smiled and when we got home she played A Night at the Opera for me. Changed my life. Because of that song, then that album, I listened to my mom's entire gigantic album collection and became a HUGE fan of the classics.

Good point..and i dont know if he has or not...AND...also i'd counter that with how hard it would be to nod your head to the different stylistic transitions in this song..is that possible to do the first time you hear it?? Think about the first time you listen to a song..even one that is consistent rhythmically and predictable it is still hard to nod to the beat...so to do that one the FIRST time listening to this song, if it is the first time well that is freaking impressive...Ill give him the benefit of the doubt though. Just wanted to see what your opinion on that is because you make a good point.

For the people saying they can't believe this young man had never heard of Queen, I am in my 60s and I am just rediscovering their music. Yes, I was around when they were at their peak, but in my world it was basically Motown and groups like Earth Wind and Fire, Gospel, etc. I knew that the group existed, but their music wasn't even played on the R&B radio stations in the South back then. We tend to know the music that people around us are listening to. And "Wayne's World"??? It wasn't even on the radar for many of us. In other words, sometimes it is a cultural thing. However, I am glad that I am experiencing Queen at this age because it has more depth and meaning to me than it would have when I was 20.

When I was a little girl this song was released. I recall my mom and I hearing for the first time on the radio. There was nothing like it -- I had never heard anything really like it. That doesn't sound like much from a child's point of view. But both my parents loved music to the point where we had so many records, and different types of stereo equipment, speakers -- this was the 70s. Fun fact. The line _"Scaramouche,_ _Scaramouche_ _can_ _you_ _do_ _the_ _fandango."_ Referrers to a type of marinette puppet with an extendable neck. These puppets were used for slapstick humor they were often villainized and then beaten until their head popped off their body like a rockem sockem robot. Fandango is a Spanish folk dance between two or more people, it can also mean a foolish or useless act. It makes the song all the more meaningful that when he wrote it he was dieing of AIDS. From what I assume he thought was foolish actions. His regret and fatalism is rapped up beautifully in a kind of dark twisted humor and nonchalant nihilism.

@@mathewhill5556 Bohemian Rhapsody was released in 1975 and Freddie wasn't diagnosed with HIV or AIDS until 1987 and died in 91. But I like where you were going with the narrative. Look more at the character the song surrounds who was on trial.

+mathew hill G'day, Ah, nope..., it isn't possible for anybody to have been dying of AIDS while they were writing Bohemian Rhapsody...; that's chronologically impossible. I was listening to Bohemian Rhapsody in (I think) 1977..., when I was a teenager in Boarding-School (& dating it by which Dormitory I was in when I first heard the song..!) ; whereas when Time Magazine first published the story of Aquired Human Immunodefficiency Syndrome ("AIDS") it was in late 1983 and they had not yet discovered the Human Immunodefficiency Virus ("HIV")..., but that was what they thought they were looking for.... In 1983 when the AIDS story broke, about the Gay Airline Steward shagging his way all around the World and the spread of AIDS being monitored by watching Caposi's Sarcoma spreading first among California's Gays and then appearing Globally..., I was a 3rd-year Student Nurse working at a Sydney Hospital whereinat 1/2 the Nursing staff were male (as I am) & 1/2 the Nursing staff were Gay (as I'm not), and there were some Bisexuals from both "Sides" who were playing for both "Teams" ; and I can vividly remember realising that the days of "Free Love" were over, because from then on in - Sexual Promuscuity meant risking a (then) untreatable and fatal Virus... Most of the Gay men that I worked with, and trained with, are long-since dead...; but the big Die-off didn't begin till about 1984 or '85, and by '86 the Gays & the Needle-Drug Junkies were dying like Flies. But, none of that was happening in 1977 - let alone in '76 when 'Rhapsody was written. Just(ifiably ?) sayin', Take it easy... ;-p Ciao !

he was such a gorgeous man even in spirit and in person, this song is basically describing about himself (freddie mercury) where he sheds his old self and is proudly accepting his gay self and doesnt care what anyone else thinks. he was truly a gem of this world.

This guy is lucky- he recorded the first time he heard Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't even remember the first time I heard it, I just sort of... Absorbed it through cultural osmosis I guess. But this guy? He's gonna be able to remember what he was doing and how he reacted when he heard it for the first time.

I see people accusing him of lying about hearing about queen for the first time. I've just learned the bands name last month after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody trailers; so I checked out the full Live Aid concert and got chills watching him vibe with that crowd with no cell phones & became a fan immediately after watching. Spent hours watching their videos afterwards & came across songs thinking "Wow. I had no idea they made this song." I even watched the full Freddie Mercury documentary. I'm a full on Hip Hop and R&B fan but this band has made me look more into rock these past couple weeks. So he probably heard their music around on commercials, movies, games etc. But never really looked into who made the song, like myself.

The fact that this song almost never got released for it being 6 minutes long astounds me. Queen created an original sound that’ll last for all time. Freddie Mercury wasn’t just a musician, he was a god at his craft. He just didn’t wanna be a normal rock star, he wanted to be a legend- and indeed he is a legend.
