‪@philosophyd‬ had a great idea for his last catch and cook video and while watching it I thought of how to improve on it! Taking out the meat from a freshly caught Dungeness Crab would be tricky but I thought it would make the recipe so much better! Fishing for them with Crab snares is so satisfying! Especially cooking what you catch!

I also buy the replacement loops, but I only replaced my all my loops once after like 5 months of use. good product It's Increased my chance of getting crab by like 300%!~

They’d probably have to be anchored in a boat for that. Without its exoskeleton, the crab meat will be even softer than shrimp - so it wouldn’t last long in the surf. But that’s a cool idea. As a fisherman, I’d do whatever it takes to get that bite.

Yes Matt you can eat the eggs from crabs. East Asian cultures do this. When prepping the legs we usually use a butcher knife. Lay it sideways flat over the leg and smash the leg so it breaks the shell. You can also line the knife the full length of the leg and cut it down the middle. Watch the way he smashes the claws. For dungeness you can smash all the legs like this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWKtkq1pj8ySq9U

It's better to just use a serrated blade for hard shells than a thin razor blade, and easily open these with a few safe strokes on where you're about to open apart. I was flinching a bit on that blade, if it slips it'll give you quite a slice.

This is so different to how I clean a brown crab. I stab under the skirt and down the mouth, then pull off each limb. Pull the body and back apart, then remove the mouth, apron and gills like you did. Then you can crack open the limbs. But pulling the legs and body away from the shell seems so much easier.

A decent pair of kitchen shears would zip through the leg exoskeleton easily. Tin snips for the actual knuckle sections. If you're going to remove shell from the claw, I'd probably use a fresh, cleaned pair of needle nose pliers to break the exo off bit by bit.

Don't use a knife to kill him, just rip the carapace off by lifting the carapace at the back where he comes out when molting. It's quick clean and immediate crab death. Then clean as usual. The carapace comes off very easily. Cook the crab first by boiling or steaming it for 19 minutes. The meat comes out much more easily. Then you can season and fry it if you want. You can do a Louisana crab boil to add seaoning as an option.

That looks like so much fun! But what state are you in? I'm in BC, Canada. Crab snares are illegal here, and soft-shelled crabs are to be returned to the water (as are all females and undersized males, of course) because the meat is of low quality when the crab has recently molted. As for getting the meat out of an uncooked crab, there are special seafood scissors that I think would work. I've never tried to get the meat out of an uncooked crab, but it's an interesting idea and I'm tempted to try it.
