Hi Juanello! For some reason this video reminded me of a catfish story. Years ago we lived in an area that had a lake less than a quarter of a mile from our house. We'd just had lots of rain and the flood gate had been opened up to let out some of the water. My husband got down into it with a dip net and placed it over the head of the pipe. About ten minutes later voila! He caught a 8 1/2 lb catfish!

Hi Jason! I have a lot of "rainy day freezer fillets" just waiting to be used! There will be a long period between open water and safe ice when the water turns muddy and cold, and I won't be able to fish at all. I might have to do a show using freezer fish! LOL! Ha, ha, great show once again, John! Even though it was in the 'portions pre-recorded' section, it was still fun to see Miss Lulu make a customary concommital observation on your pursuit of romantic ice breaking.... :) The cheezy broccoli casserole looked really good and of course the crappie cakes were perfectly prepared and looked delicious. I sure identified with your 27 degree fishing outing and was surprised to see you sans gloves. It sure is hard to stay warm in those conditions and seems even colder on the water. This might sound odd, but the best way to de-ice your guides is to swish the pole around in the water....sometimes between each cast. Unfortunately, the lighter the lure, the more difficult it is to cast it when the ice builds up quickly - cold conditions, especially with temps in the 20s and 30s always bring a host of fun (ha), special things to deal with - and that's why most folks choose to wait for warmer weather. But, as you saw, the fish are still there! Nice crappie, by the way, and glad you enjoyed them in the cake configuration. Perhaps we have a slightly different, less mushy, tasty variety here in central Missouri; as you know we love them! No fishing recently due to high winds and low water. Maybe later this week. Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful! Your friends, Don, Brenda & Lorraine
@Juanelo19467 жыл бұрын
Hi Don! One of these days, Ms. Lulu will change her attitude toward me and marriage! I feel it coming! LOL! "Concommital" is not even in my built-in computer dictionary! I had to go to other sources to find that it means neutral, evasive, or vague! And that is exactly her attitude! I don't know why I didn't think to swish my rod in the warmer water. For sure it would have freed the guides! DUH!! I have those ice fishing gloves where only your finger tips are exposed, but for some reason I didn't like them. It has been so long since I've used them, I forgot why I didn't care for them. I'll take them out again and give them a fair shot this winter! I don't know why the crappie here have a taste and texture that aren't appealing. One viewer said it's because of my "dirty water." But the bluegill, bass and perch from the lake are sweet and tender. All that is moot of course in crappie cakes! They are truly delicious in this recipe! We had a great Thanksgiving and I trust you did too! Huge thanks for catching my shows and especially for the nice comment my friend! All the best to you, Brenda, and sister, Lorraine! - - John & Jeanne

When the flavors are "exploding" that's what we love. You can never have too many flavors! I'm guessing even Dorothy would love this! The only way we "catch fish" is to go to the market and buy their frozen breaded fish. It's really great! I'll start tossing it to Dorothy so we can say it was "fresh caught!"
@Juanelo19467 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry!! I couldn't believe my own mouth how bursting with flavor these crappie cakes were! In fact, I served them again to Ms. Lulu the next day, and to my delight, she LOVED them too! Dorothy would enjoy these! But there is nothing wrong with the way you catch and cook fish! Lord knows I could never make a garden, let alone a gazebo! I'd have to hire a crew! LOL! Thanks a million for stopping over to watch my zaniness! Thanks for your kindness my friend!

Vekta! I have a few very small floating-diving jerkbaits, Rapalas and AC Shiners. I don't feel very confident using them in this cold water though. I'll try them in the spring! Remind me! LOL!

Juanelo I also love fish cakes! Interesting you precooked the fish and veggies ill have to try that. I noticed you used the secret ingredient- Old Bay! Also, you can roll them in your choice of flour or breadcrumbs for a nice breading on the outside! I add flax meal to my cakes as a binder it works well. You can also use the fish bones to make a very quick fish stock that you can turn into a plethora of different sauces to go with your fish. Thanks for the video Juanelo it made my day!
@Juanelo19467 жыл бұрын
Hi BR! Some years ago, I made a video where I did NOT precook the crappie, and the crappie cakes turned out great. It's just that precooking them allows me to distribute the meat by shredding it instead of finely chopping it raw, which is more effort. Yes, I agree with you about the flour and breadcrumbs. But because of my low carb diet, I try to avoid those ingredients. Flax meal, on the other hand, is perfect as a binder, as you noted! Much like cornmeal, it adds a bit of crunchiness too. I never thought too long about making a fish stock though... I'll explore that idea! I like the suggestion! Huge thanks for catching my shows and especially for the great comment my friend!
@beanscornbread13817 жыл бұрын
Juanelo1946 unlike making a chicken stock which takes a few hours, all the flavor from the fish bones cooks out in just a few minutes!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2SXeKOGh9Cghs0 This is a great example of a french fish sauce using homemade fish stock! Butter veloute! I think it would be hilarious to do a french themed episode like the comical "juachinango" episode! that was my favorite episode. And maybe a bit of fancy french food could finally win Lulu's hand in marriage? LOL i love this channel to much if you can't tell!

hey juanelo! man it looked cold out there. went fishing with a buddy on black Friday, they said it was going to be 50. yea right! lol! but all I caught was a big pickerel, so fish for me. Hi Freeb! You caught a pickerel! Congratulations!! It's so, so much better than being skunked! I think pickerel have an extra set of Y bones, but I'm not sure. Ahh we knew you secretly loved crappie! mawgwe wants to start raising mealworms here in my kitchen. He wants to use my quaker oats i guess. He bought me a cabellas heated jacket so i can fish all winter. We,ll have our own worms whilst the bait store is closed,and i,ll be all warm and toasty in my coat. Are you cooking gluten free. That broccoli dish i might make. Well,maybe Miss Lulu will come over if you quit serving ole dead 🐠 love you both!
@Juanelo19467 жыл бұрын
Hi Melinda and Mawgwe! I tried raising mealworms once in Quaker Oats! They all turned into big beetles! LOL!! I don't have a green thumb for them, or whatever thumb. You have a HEATED jacket? I need to look for that! I could plug it in to my boat battery! 😜 No, I don't worry about gluten. It never has seemed to bother me. But carbs sure make me put on weight. Try the broccoli! It's so easy and is actually better as a leftover! Mmm! I have to find the magic recipe that will win Lulu's heart. Maybe dead fish won't be featured! LOL! Huge thanks for catching my shows and especially for the nice comment my dear friends! We love you too!
