a caroliner frame rack designer took 10 years to achieve this same design an you took a few days to take over his prime idea and even mastered it...!! genius indeed.!!!! hopefully it wont become a nightmare finding a spot for it when not in use.
@fix2065 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a compliment bro, one of the main points for my design was that I could stand the base of a rack on it's side when not in use, thus reducing it's footprint to almost nothing. Something I wouldn't have been able to do with caroliner without the use of forklift, since caroliner weighs quiet a bit more.

@@fix206 are you nuts mate those fucking frame racks weigh as much as a fucking train mate...i work at this bodyshop were you gotta carried those racks all over the shop just to either use it or store it but good thing yours are lighter then all of them

I'm certain that a caroliner is much sturdier/capable/heavier duty rack then mine, with much thicker gauge metal. It would be a great rack for a shop, but all I got right now is my driveway. Cant even imagine pushing the caroliner around on an uneven ground :)

Great job man. I considered welding up a simple setup for vector pulling for a long time, but I eventually tripped across a used Dataliner 80, and saved myself the time doing it. I'll probably still fab up some universal jig fixtures for times when sill clamps won't work. In any case, I'm thrilled to finally see someone put a DIY video up for this kind of thing. I think that rig will serve you well.

This will work great for a front or rear end wreck, but I think you should have welded the 1/2" plate to the boom instead of on the one end of the frame. That way it can be used on the sides as well. A and B pillars take hits and need to be pulled as well!! Otherwise, great job!!
@fix2065 жыл бұрын
I actually have another half inch piece of plate that is loose, meaning if I'll clamp the tower to the side of the deck then I'll just put down that loose piece on top of the frame tube where ever the tower would have to be placed at any given time, the plate that I welded on partially tied front tube to the side ones thus giving the front of the rack a bit more rigidity, since that area will likely see most action.

THE BEST TOOLS ARE ONES CREATED YOURSELF Nice build from thought process to final fabrication. I have used almost every bench out there from Autorobot, Celette, Blackhawk, MiTek, CarBench, Apple trees, lamp-posts, and my favorite Car-O-Liner, so I've worked with a few and have observed their varied constructions. Below are a few noted aspects that may help to assist others with a build like this and are not intended as criticism of this build or builder in any way. This bed is sound in design and construction and will serve its purpose amiably for years. Intended use and the constraints of the individual will vary and so too will the build. 1. Even though substantial steel stock is used, a central crossmember would be beneficial in combating distortion from a loaded pull which will improve measurement accuracy if intending to use the bed as the datum plane. 2. The side pull issue previously mentioned in the comments. Any of the suggested rectifications would of allowed a completely true bed, a must when using it as a datum plane or for reference station points. 3. Consider enlarging outrigger backing plates. If these are compared to other similar designs it will be seen production examples (even when employing the use of jam-bolts) use a larger mating surface area against the bed, working to react to pull loads by pivoting slightly when starting to slip thereby working as de-facto retainment wedge. 4. Bite teeth on outrigger clamps are overly vicious, almost appearing on screen to look as though it could pierce the metal or marr the surface. I would be inclined to use smaller spikes or use something like bench vice-jaws. 5. Outrigger bolts look like a pain in the datehole to access being back there but that could be due to my spoils of using the latest chassis machines. Easy access to all fixture fasteners is a godsend especially with a vehicle that is being awkward to mount due to an unforeseen problem and requires fixture relocation. My 10cents anyway. Worst chassis machine: CarBench Best chassis machine: Car-O-Liner (Quick42) (Interestingly Snap-On just recently purchased the Swedish company)

Some folks don't mind that type of work, I personally just don't have the patience ☺️ Believe it or not but this thing already paid for itself a few times over. All in all I believe I spent about $800 in materials/welding wire/gas. The cheapest used frame rack that I could find in my area was around 5-7K and that thing was not portable by any stretch of imagination... weighed so much that it would have to permanently reside in a spot where it was parked. @@fix206 i live in the thumb of michigan i just have a small shop built on the whim ?. there is not 1 pull i can do its big enough shop. if all you had was ike 800$ and your time you did dam good. a new 10 ton 10 inch ram is like 400 $..i did build my own posts and i did drill 24 3 inch holes in 6 inch cement.i just use the floor as my rack sometimes. i have another home made rack deal i dont know what to really call it. i am selling out any how when summers done i am 62 and retiring. i started this at 11 yrs old.i used to live in Olympia wa. yes it rains. .lacey collision back like 35 yrs a go i worked at. i do a lot of heavy hits .i rear clip cars also just cut the outer rocker (caps) drill out the inner just follow the welds in the floor.make a floor jig use the frame holes to A-line use the centering gages so you get no dog track.sways are my favorite. diamonds usually you got to replace part of the rail that dam hi strength steel and the ultra hss man you can burn drill bits up.i got every possable spot weld cutter and i found nothing beats the drill. i grind some welds its quick ez.glad i am quitting retiring technology no can do. just wait for the electric shit.i am also i-car certified. that dont mean shit i-car.

My only suggestion on some of the thicker material.. beveled the edges.. then have ran a root pass then a cap.. but should be very efficient as far as footprint and overall design.. A+ work my friend. I like how you took basic theory and physics in your own way and applyed it to the brackets for the frame rails and notched everything so it was locked into place with extras gussets makes for a solid finish design that should outlast any vehicle it sees.
@fix2064 жыл бұрын
I'm not planning on working on any trucks or full size SUVs so with the research I've done 1/4 wall is sufficient enough for what I'll be using this frame rack for. I didn't show every detail of this project but I actually did bevel the edges of the tube and I did do the root and the cap double pass :) Also used the dual shielded wire, because it burns hotter for better penetration, just wanted to make sure that the welds wouldn't be weak point of the rack.

@@fix206 Well, randomly finding your vid led me to watch a bunch of other vids on frame racks (I am a computer geek so don;t ask why, there is no reason) and the ones people had bought were no better than yours and seemed quite identical in most every way. I guess the tripping point is the frame tower. Can't always find a like-new one for $300.

Great Job I need all the measurements you used on your bench auto, also need to do if you did buy the main pulling ramp
@maverick97695 жыл бұрын
Great job,you could also have adapted the post by putting a half inch plate in the gap of the tower to reduce it to 5 inches instead. That way you can use all around the car
@fix2065 жыл бұрын
I actually have another half inch piece of plate that is loose, meaning if I'll clamp the tower to the side of the deck then I'll just put down that loose piece on top of the frame tube where ever the tower would have to be placed at any given time. I could have done it the way you've mentioned but I didn't want to modify the tower in any way. Plus the plate that I welded on partially tied front tube to the side ones thus giving the front of the rack a bit more rigidity, since that area will likely see most action

Great job . I owned several brands of frame machines big racks. And the caroliner portable system is a good design for almost any vehicle. Only thing I would have done would have played the tower with that steel plate to make up the thickness. Instead of the channel. Great job .

Looks like it would work good on light pulls nicely done. The hard part looks like to me is getting it underneath your vehicle. That’s gonna be a friggin nightmare unless you drive a four-wheel-drive then you gotta lift it up to it. It’s still cheaper than the frame machine. I understand that.

Nice job for a homemade machine. NOT for precsion collision repair that is needed on late model vehicles but okay for older veicles with greater build tolerances. One thing I would change right away though is your jaws. Those jaws will rip holes in pinchwelds and the vehicle will slip and you will have to repair the rockers when you are done. Consider buying some jaws from a frame machine company. Keep in mind that "Energy Management Controls" on late model vehicles require precision measuring capabilities of less than 2mm and some late model vehicles to 1mm. Your homemade machine doesn't come close and air bag timing and other energy controls will be compromised. Stick with sheet metal repairs and you should be okay.

I love your style man!!! But have you ever considered using some (steel) saw horses or a steel welding table (also for the drill press...)? You do everything on the floor which will destroy your back in time...and btw..your frame rack will def. hold. Your welds look solid and neat and the construction looks sound too!!! You're one hell of fabricator. With no back ache yet...
@fix2065 жыл бұрын
Full size drill press would have been nice to have. But as far as welding up the big pieces, I think doing it on the ground was a good idea, I had no help so lifting big heavy tubes up onto the saw horses would have probably messed my back up :)
