You helped me so much. My boyfriend finally opened up today, after one week of ghosting, and me not knowing what's going on.He complained about a lot of things and I only listened to him without being upset or comment in a negative way. He became calm and said he needs a little bit more of time for himself to calm down and I told him that this is okay.

Thank you Geoffrey. 15 days ago I followed above rules and finally today my partner went from ok, to actually chat more about her shitty job and etc... It was so refreshing to hear her giving me more than Okay and move. All I did was listening and she shared more and more.

lots arises in me as I watch this video. mainly this: I'm falling, again, for another unavailable person... because the illusion and fantasy and escape of this person, is all I've got... so I let myself fall. let myself get attached. because I'm old now, and the deepest shame and agony of my life, is that I've never-ever been in an intimate-romantic relationship... and the reality of this anguishes me, consumes me. fills me with: grief, shame, rage, longing, loneliness, despair, wanting, needing, desperation... so I cling, achingly, to anyone that shows me: any attention...

Been having trouble communicating or even knowing how or where to start with my partner, I watched this earlier today as to try to figure out what I need to do for my communication, and it helped so much. I managed to have a proper conversation. My issue has been I get overly emotional during important discussions and I break down. I used the effectiveness over efficiency and took a calmer approach. Thank you so much for making these videos.

My wife just prefers to tell everyone except me things. She will talk to them for hours. With me she just doesnt tell me anything. Literally. Even if I ask. When I talk to her she answers with rude comments, doesnt answer at all or is just totally uninterested. I have pretty much given up trying to engage her.

Method number one is open your mouth and express yourself!! Genius 😮 😃 My ex used to emotionally shut down when there is something come up. Simple went to silence 🤐 so yeah it’s a big deal. Open your mouth and express yourself, SPEAK . How simple is that

I find it hard to communicate with my girlfriend. Sometimes going out for a meal together is uncomfortable because we both just sit there in silence even tho we both just had fun at the water park before hand. I want to hear from actual people who have had bad communication and then managed to turn it around. Need a bit of hope

Dude I've always had communication problems and now it's destroying my relationship. We both acknowledge this is our biggest problem but we're both at a loss as to where to start. Or I'm at a loss I should say. We're so happy together and we love eachother but when we get into an Argument it goes way south fast. I need help. I love this woman and her kid's and it would mean the world to get an answer or solution. Thank u

You ask what I judge about? I judge him to be a mister know it all. But the thing is that's just who he is. He knows a whole heck of a lot. However, the way he acts about it or presents it to me makes me feel like I know next to nothing. I feel inferior to him only because of how he presents his knowledge on something. I am sure he could teach me very much if only he would change his tactic about it. And if he did, I would be more receptive to learn from him. How can I get this across to him in a way that would cause him to want to ease up a bit and come across in a more gentle way verses coming at me in irritation and impatience as though he's bothered by my ignorance?
@GeoffreySetiawan
@GeoffreySetiawan 4 жыл бұрын
Good question - A few ways you can do this. I don’t know your exact situation, so I might be off-base here, but here’s something you can do: Praise the desired action - Tell him something like “I love it when you speak to me gently. It really helps me to listen to you better” Present your suggestion in an open-ended way - Ask him something like “You know, I listen a lot better when you bring things up gently. What do you think?” With #1, praising the action your desire is a great way to encourage people to slowly change their ways. And with #2, when you end your statements with a simple “what do you think?”, that usually lets people’s guards down enough to consider what you’re saying, and opens up a much better conversation. Let me know if that helps!

So far so good, but you've said there are only really 2 reasons why people can't receive ideas and you haven't said that insecurity is one of them. What happens when sharing a simple idea is felt as an attach by the other person and they get defensive? This doesn't feel like judgement. Edit: Just to clarify, overall I think this is really great advice and am grateful to have come across it.
@GeoffreySetiawan
@GeoffreySetiawan Жыл бұрын
Blaming it to insecurity is blaming your problems to something outside your control. It's a useless diagnosis. The truth is the more safety you create, the easier you make it for someone to express despite insecurities. It's a counterforce. Blaming this on someone else's insecurity is a diagnosis that leads nowhere. Blaming this to a lack of safety is more useful as it's something within our control. We don't encourage playing victim.
@bentleymayes1579
@bentleymayes1579 Жыл бұрын
@@GeoffreySetiawan Interesting perspective, thanks for replying. I think increasing that safety would make a lot of difference, but even so there are situations where a person might interpret something unsafe even if you do all you can to increase safety. Insecurities are not unchangeable, and if they're impacting your ability to deal with situations then I think taking responsibility for that is important. I wouldn't think of it as playing the victim.
