The biggest problem with any dead bolt system is having a cheap wooden door frame the can be kicked in with you foot easy!! The deadlock works 100% better if you have a steal frame. Trust me I took a steal bedframe did a few cuts and nailed it to my door frame. That did the job and I had better protection from someone just kicking the door open ! As you know living in New york is not easy!!😂😂😂

When buying one of these, only buy one that can be left open. Some will always extend to the lock position after :30. Problem being that the door can be ruined if door gets shut with latch extended.

I’ve been using the Schlage Connect for the over 3 years. Best smart lock out there. And I’ve tried the August and Kwikset Kevo. One thing about the Schlage’s battery life. On my main door where it gets used daily, the batteries lasted about 26 months before I had to replace them.
@inquisitvem67234 жыл бұрын
Is it ok to use original strike plate ?
@ONI1013.4 жыл бұрын
Inquisitve m - Yes it is, as most strike plates are virtually identical in size. But you have to make sure the dead bolt clears the hole CLEANLY and easily. If there’s _any_ resistance when locking/unlocking the dead bolt, you need to adjust or shave the strike plate a little - or else the batteries will get drained very quickly or the motor will eventually get worn out. I used a Dremel to adjust my door frame and strike plate easily. Lastly, one thing to note, if you do use your own strike plate, you may not be getting the same security Grade 1 rating, as the Schlage strike plates uses the extra long 3 in screws.

@@tryphena2691 - Wow. One of our doors we use at least 20-30 times per day, and that one has lasted at least 18 months and still going. Perhaps your traffic is very high? Also, as we try to manually lock the doors ourselves when coming home (and even though it’s set on an auto lock timer), just to preserve battery life.

In netherlands its standard to have a three point lock. So the door locks with 3 different bolts in 3 different heights ( top,mid and bottom in door). How come all these “smart” locks are designed to only 1 bolt. Dont they break in houses in america or so? Or is the safety standard way heigher here?

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, aka "Da Yoop". I have this exact deadbolt set and have had to have it replaced 4 times now... The new lockset is going to be installed on Saturday after Thanksgiving. 1st time, keypad failure. 2nd time, batteries died in 6 months. Replaced them with the recommended Duracell batteries, no joy. Lockset was dead. 3rd time, keypad failure again. 4th time, lights on keypad failed. Keypad still worked but was a p.i.t.a. using it at night. "Dealt" with it for awhile until the batteries died, again, lockset was dead even after the new batteries. Because of the temperature extremes where I live, I noticed that warm, moist air leaks thru the hole in the door and blows on the back of the keypad assembly. Maybe it's shorting it out? Before I installed the 4th lockset I sealed the back of the keypad where the wiring went into the keypad with silicone caulking and it lasted longer than the previous locksets. I also put that stick on foam insulation on the backside of the door where the controller is to try to keep that warm moist air from leaking thru the hole in the door. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can seal that hole to keep ALL the air from blowing thru? I'm going to give this lockset 5 stars for convenience of use, ... But because of this reliability issue it's going to drop down to 1.5 stars. However, Schlage Customer Support gets 5 stars. They had me do a little troubleshooting but when I explain everything I already did to troubleshoot the issue they send me replacement locksets at no cost to me. One item of note... The "born on date" for all the previous locksets were 2019 and older. The one I have ready to install is 2021. They must have a warehouse full of these things, ready to ship out at a moments notice because of issues like mine.

One thing people often miss in the “hacking” topic is that many smart devices connect directly to your home network. It’s best, if possible, to separate them from your main network though, as often their security leave something to be desired. Some home routers have the option of using two SSIDs (like “Family” and “Guest” in your WiFi), that are separated from each other to prevent them from talking. If your router does this, use the feature! If you get deep into home automation, find a router that does it! One cool thing with Z-wave is that the only thing actually on your network is the hub (Wink, SmartThings, etc). That’s great from a security standpoint!

Why they charge so much And claim security and a 10 year old with a cordless drill can bypass it. Do a search on KZbin “Bypass keypad locks” like I did

simple keylogger on your device and someone remotely logs your info and can easily come enter your home. So hacking it is extremely simple with a little know how. Spot on! The key thing you mention here is if the deadbolt does NOT move freely this will SERISOULY affect battery life! I have this paired with the Ring alarm and works flawless! I have read SO many reviews saying battery life was 2months or less and that is because the lock is not "smooth"! On my main entry door that "cycles" at least twice (sometimes more) a day I have gotten a good solid 13months and just replaced the batteries before they got too weak before they needed to be replaced. Battery replacement is also VERY easy and does NOT require a re-pair to your hub or alarm system. I got this on "sale" for 169.00 almost 2years ago. Works great! As you stated it may require "special" tools to install as my install also required work and alterations using the EXTRA long screws that further increase the "kick-in" factor. Using the "standard" screws that are only a 1/2" to 3/8" long is WAY easy to "kick" these in! Using the 2 1/2" or 3" screws going into a stud makes it WAY harder to simply "kick" in. Great review!

I am on my second Schlage keyless lock and it fails to operate intermittently. Both locks, brand-new out of the box, had identical issues; about 1 in 50 times, it will not operate, locking me out. This had nothing to do with the batteries, which are Duracell bard-new ones. The installation is ideal in a steel door with no friction on the bolt. Schlage pretends that they "never heard" of this problem, but I have found identical testimony in Google reviews. Obviously, there's a major design flaw they're not catching. DO NOT buy this lock.

Hey Brad, great video but for future topics perhaps discussing which are best for metal doors? As I’ve tried the Nest x Yale device but it wasn’t totally smooth. Kinda bc my door & jamb have alittle slack, if that makes sense. Another words there 1/8”-1/16” play/slack. That’s primarily my side door/outside utility door. But for my inside lobby door leading to the basement I think I’ll try this Schlage device. It looks really cool & comes w/a built in keylock as well. The Nest DID NOT. Thanks again, Brandon!

I watch vids like this and I think a lot of people will think this is a simple installation. It ain't! It's simple if you have been doing this stuff for a few years, but most people I know don't have the knowledge or tools to do this job properly. Just because a guy in a video makes it look like a breeze, don't be fooled. I am an experienced do-it-yourselfer, and i've added closets, done electrical and plumbing... mostly self taught. (I always do things according to code. Look up code online.) NOW I can do stuff really well,. But I made a ton of costly and time consuming mistakes over the years. Here's some of what I've learned: 1 - Prepare to go to the hardware store at least 3 times for any job. There's always something you didn't realize you don't have. 2 - Do you have a big roll-around tool cart? Is it stocked with drills, chisels, saws, sanders, staplers, bits, electrical testers, romex, plumb bobs, electrical connectors, plumbing parts, etc.? 3 - It's almost guaranteed that your job will vary from what you see in vids. My door jamb is metal, not wood. The old hole from my old door lock is way too small to fit the new lock. Do you know how to make a hole bigger? There's nothing but air for your drill to start into. The only way to get handy is to do a lot of jobs and make a lot of mistakes. Just be careful. READ, READ, READ! WATCH, WATCH, WATCH! LEARN, LEARN, LEARN! Buy magazines, books, etc. Today, I drilled a small hole in a piece of wood with a brand new drill bit. Within 10 seconds of drilling the bit broke and hit me in the scalp! Of course I was wearing protective glasses, but it didn't protect my scalp. Fortunatly, it was just a scrape. My point is: wear protective gear - eyewear and ear protection. Hope this helps. Good luck.

There still is a key slot that can be picked, so don't waste your money on any electronic locks that use a key as a bypass when the batteries get low. Go to mechanical entry deadbolt locks. I have had one installed on my two homes for over 20 years I just take it apart and clean and use lite lubrication to keep all the mechanical parts moving smoothly. I have one of the Lockey series locks. I use a six-digit code. You can install additional security pins to use 4 to 8 digit codes.
