Kat could you please keep doing these "kat talks" at the end where you gave us story time and a learning tip for flights! I'm a very nervous flyer constantly trying to overcome my fear. I felt so more at ease just now when you described training yall receive, safety, etc. Anyways! Thank you!

But I knew that if I turned that air off that the outcome wouldn't be a pleasant one so I let that air blow right on my face to keep me from wanting to pass out and to keep me cool. Your tips help me alot...especially if I ever decide to fly again.

Thanks for the heads-up on the medical issues you encountered on your flight. I know about not taking sleeping pills in case there is a flight emergency, but I am lax about drinking enough water on the plane because I like to minimize using the toilet facilities, especially because there is turbulence or the flight attendants are going through the aisles with the carts for meals, duty free, etc. I will try to be more mindful about keeping hydrated.

I was on a Delta flight from ATL to IAH and a passenger experienced a medical emergency. I was never more impressed with the flight attendants and crew. The aircraft had access to speak with a doctor even at 34k feet. Life saving medical equipment was on board and swiftly gathered and utilized in such a skilled way. We were given priority landing (and arrived 30 minutes early) and met with sirens and lights. Fortunately the passenger was okay. I am so thankful medical emergency is part of all Flight Attendant training and that airlines seem so prepared for medical emergencies.

@Kat Nesbitt - Sounds like you, JoJo, and Julia now have enough seniority to be able to do three months of line, one month of reserve. Nice goal to achieve! Cute score on the coffee, got a chuckle out of that one. With the med emergencies you had on this flight, I'm glad you mentioned that FAs receive lots of first aid training, I'm sure that helps a lot of folk who are really nervous about flying reduce some of that anxiety. I work at GEG - don't see many AA crews heading for layover hotels, y'all must do mostly turns out of this airport. But if you catch a GEG turn, and have a little "sit" time, come by the Hurts booth (intentional misspelling) and I'll treat you to a Starbucks gift card as a thank you. Cheers from GEG!

Another FYI that you know, Kat, but pax may not is that the "cabin altitude" of airliners is NOT sea level. They are pressurized but at cruising altitude of 30-38,000 feet, the cabin altitude can be anywhere between 4-6,000 feet. Because of the reduction in oxygen levels the effects of alcohol and sleep meds are increased. I've heard many FAs hope that liquored up boarding passengers will just pass out during climb. So, passengers need to think accordingly. ☺️

Having Italian parents who moved to Australia, you reminded me, during summer my mum would make a heap of coffee and pour it into one of the china teapots we never used, place it in a bowl of ice and keep it in the fridge. She hasn't done that in years, I never even tried it. However, we would be given a spoonful of "proper" coffee or a cafe latte as kids (always loved the smell of coffee) I don't even drink it anymore. Oh, while I'm reminiscing, I just remembered how as kids, we'd have wine at meals - maybe a finger of wine and then water. Wouldn't you know, I don't drink now either! Now that you mention it (because my comment isn't long enough..) I was flying Kuala Lumpur to Rome and I had sleeping medication (I'm a bad sleeper at the best of times). I took a couple, nothing's happening, took some more. Then all of a sudden, I'm waking up and the man next to me was saying "whoa, we had some nasty turbulence, but you didn't wake at all". I was kind of bummed, at last something a little exciting happened and I'm asleep. I see now how that could have been a nasty experience!

My parents also came from Italy. Growing up I always had a kid’s coffee or wine with every meal. I do drink one coffee daily -love the warmth, flavor and ritual - but besides a glass of wine with dinner, I’m not a big drinker at all.

I thankfully was at an event at the top of Pike’s Peak with relatives who cautioned me about taking something for a headache. Altitude does need to be a consideration when taking meds! (Ok, true confession, I had partied too much the night before, wanted something for my hangover headache, they handed me one Tylenol, which I said, “Nope, this is a whopper, I need at least 2” and was told, nope, only get one! Hi, Kat. It's interesting to hear that fainting is semi common to happen on flights. I have been the medical emergency on a flight to Atlanta before actually because my blood pressure dropped and I felt pre-syncopal. 🙃 I do have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) though so it's not uncommon for me to feel like that but I was alone on the flight and it was scary. I will say the flight attendants went above and beyond for me though. I did stay hydrated and had my electrolytes and kept the air vents open but it just was a bad time for me. When I realized I was starting to get bad I pushed the flight attendant button and I told them and they listened to me and immediately called for medical help and a nurse came and took care of me. They moved me to a row in the back on my own so I could lay day across the seats and so when we landed medical could board through the back. The nurse stayed with me through the flight and the ambulance picked me up from the tarmac. After I was in the ER getting taken a different flight attendant from my flight heard what was happening and came to visit me. She had just gotten back to her home base and she asked if I needed anything, brought me chick fil a and after I was released she picked me up and let me stay at her house until my rescheduled flight that was like 6 hrs later. She even brought me back to the airport when it was time for me to go. I will never forget her as I was a young disabled 19 yo traveling alone and still another flight away from home.

LOL, that bag full of coffee you took back is hilarious!! On a serious note however, if you get airsick (as in actual vomiting) is that classed as a medical emergency at all? If so I am sooooo sorry. I am a terrible flyer even with all the experience I have, but something seems to happen to my stomach in the air that puts it into a complete tailspin. I'll distract myself, I'll only eat the blandest food, I'll watch movies etc etc but I do often find myself having to go puke in the toilet. And then I look all crap & hungover & whatever and the FA's get concerned. I feel so bad :( .

It used to be suggested to deal with jet lag, that you move your wake up and go to bed times some over a few days so you’re on the same time zone as your destination, and the same thing when returning. Obviously, you and your fellow flight attendants can’t really do that (DFW to Incheon is about, what, 14-15-16 hours ahead at Incheon plus crossing the International Date Line westbound? YIKES!!!). So how can you deal with that kind of jet lag, knowing in a couple of days it’s going to be reversed going back?
