How To Upload Your Own eBay Return Labels To Save Money

When it comes to returns, the sting comes from the return label. Maybe you offer free returns or you have to pay for the return label due to an item not described (INAD) or another return reason. While eBay does offer discounted rates, it is often possible to find better rates on Pirateship.com or in my case I have a discount set up with Fedex. In this video, I will show you how I go about buying and uploading a return label onto eBay and in the process saving $$$. Every time we save money with supplies, cost of goods or even a return label, we make money. Nice video, but the question is, how do you upload a return label if the buyer has not opened a return? Because sometimes you make a deal with a buyer to send in a return label without having them to open a return request (so you don't end up with a defect and ultimately end up paying higher seller's fees). If you could do a short video on that, it would be appreciated.

Essentially you go onto pirateship, buy a label with the buyer as the sender and you as the recipient. You then go to print but instead of selecting your printer you choose pdf. Save this to your computer. Now I’m not sure if you can attach the pdf file in your message (eBay doesn’t support pdf) so you have to go and open the pdf image of your label and use your snipping tool in windows to cut out the label to re-save it as a jpg file. You would then send this file to your buyer. Hope that helps.

Jon, sorry for making another post, but eBay thought they were SLICK when eBay signed a contract with FedEx earlier this year or last to handle all of eBay sneaker validation shipments to eBays 3rd party validation warehouses. When the contract was signed with FedEx to allow FedEx Ground to handle these shipments, eBay said why don't we allow FedEx Ground to handle all seller shipping returns as well. Don't know if you realize but in the past by default USPS was handling all eBay shipping returns. eBay caught me off guard some months ago when I received a return, approved the return and saw the ridiculous charge for a FedEx Ground return label. I now only use Pirate Ship for my return labels.

Yes, this is one reason why some have been asking how to upload their own labels. In my case, about 95% of the time I can get better rates than what eBay offers, so I use this process to save $ on the same label

Before doing this to save a few bucks, definitely consider that the buyer may need to jump through extra hoops to ship via your chosen carrier (versus just handing the package to the mailman), and might not be at all pleased.

In my case, the majority of my items are shipped through Fedex and this is how they are receiving the item. Sellers are not required to pay 2-3x what UPS or Fedex charges for a larger package so that they buyer can hand over the package to their carrier. I get it may not be the best customer service way to handle a return, however I can say I have handled quite a few of these returns with this method without any issue up to this point.

Only flaw i could imagine is if the buyer sends the package back with larger dimensuons, and we know how Fedex loves to overcharge for wrong dimensions.

How to I get discounts with Fed ex? Do I have to have shipped a lot through them? I use Pirate Ship. It's usually about the same as eBay in price, I just use less ink. Lables on eBay uses twice the ink when I can just print a label in Pirate ship and same the rest of the info I need automatically to my computer. Ink aint cheap.

I would start by contacting Fedex to see if they have a local rep in your area. These reps set you up with a discount based on your projected volume of shipments.

What happens if the buyer can't drop off the package at a FedEx location because he/she lives 30 mins away from a FedEx location? I would think that the post office is more convenient for most buyers. Cheers, Julien

They can drop off to cvs or other locations where fedex truck come pickup

Walgreens, Dollar General as well. Many pickup and drop off locations on the fedex site. I’m sure UPS is the same way as well.

Question, Great video Jon very helpful . I Have a question for you ,how do you use pirate ship to Provide return label if you have free returns set on eBay?

Free returns is simply a setting that tells ebay and the buyer that you are paying for the return label regardless of reason. When you receive a return request, you are given the option to pay for the label through ebay lebels (this is always the first option), provide your own (2nd option) or to refund the buyer (3rd option). When you select the 2nd option, you are taken to a screen where you upload the label. You can go to Pirateship and create a label using your address as the delivery address and the buyers as address as the from address (this is extremely important). Then enter in the item package details (weight and dimensions). You go and purchase the label like normal, but instead of printing it out you save it as a pdf file. Since eBay does not support the pdf format, you would need to use a tool like the snipping tool (windows) to cut out and save the label once you have it displayed on the screen. You can then save it to a place on your computer. When you go back to the ebay screen asking you for the file, you can then upload this jpg file along with the tracking number on the label. Yes, there are a few steps involved here but after a couple of these it is very easy to do and you will have a little more control over what you are paying to have your item returned back to you.

For small stuff that is relatively easy to ship, we package up the day we ship. It is easier to store these items this way and your not wasting packaging if the item doesnt sell. For my larger items that already have it's own box, after the item is listed, we go in and get that box ready to ship by adding the proper padding inside the box so that it is ready to go once the order is placed. This formula has worked very well for us.

Jon, I see that most of your demonstration is using FedEx to generate your return label. Is FedEx charging you up front when label is created or is it after the buyer ships item back to you? I know with pirate ship they do have the section to create return labels for domestic use only. The seller is only charged when the return label is used. The reason I bring this is up is I have had some cases were a buyer will open a return and never return item. eBay closes the case and I am not charged for the created return label.

Good question. With my account, only when the label is used. I get billed after the item has been delivered. This is the same for UPS and Fedex labels bought directly through eBay. Pirateship is different with UPS labels as they charge you up front and make any adjustments (what they are actually billed for) after the item has been delivered.
