Buttering both sides of the carpet with latex seam sealer before glueing is the recommended way to seal the seams in both residential and commercial according to the Carpet Mills and CRI.. There's a technique to hold the bottle and the carpet edge up with 3 fingers to embed the sealer into the backing.. After one day of practice it's actually easier and faster. I do big commercial, and I did it the same way you are for my first 5 years in the business, until I learned this technique thru my Mohawk certification; You do have to seal both sides so it's double the LF but, you don't have to deal with the tip clogging, and you can apply it as fast as you can crawl backwards. ... Let's say you're doing a 200' roll with hallways laid out with 6' cuts all the way down (or any layout with alot of seam work).. If you make your cut list, roll it out in the parking lot, cut the seam, then seal both sides as fast as you can move your knees, you have just cut a significant amount of time out of that process. It dries in less than 5 min and you can cut all your shots, bring them in, throw all the shots down, square it up, and glue.. It also makes looking up warped seams much easier because you don't have to worry about the carpet accidently overlapping and getting seam sealer on the nap when you're fighting to get it lined up.. The Mohawk guys also brought up the fact that when you slide the bottle across the floor you're pulling the glue and creating a gap in the glue which takes away from the strength of the seam.. Also, there's a chance that you won't get a full transfer of the sealer before it hardens if you're using the latex... That being said, they did also state that both methods are still currently acceptable by industry standard and it would pass inspection but they don't recommend it.. The same thing was stated by the Karastan rep when I went thru their certification. I do use the old method in certain situations to cut time, but it's not very often. Just thought I'd share some knowledge as well.. I'm in the Florida area and there is definitely a lack of skill.. I have went thru so many guys thru the years that just don't have the real knowledge. This industry has gone downhill over the years, and It's mostly due to the rates staying about the same as 50 years ago. It's even went down in some parts like, new construction homes. I know a retired guy who made $2.75yd doing new homes in the 70s.. In the Tampa area it's can be as low as $1.65yd!! And highest I've seen is 2.25. It's bulk builder grade work in subdivisions but it doesn't matter, it's not worth it.. You even have to supply the tack strip. Without the proper rates, things won't get better. Guys won't get educated, and most of the time won't have the right tools.. When it's bills Vs. education and tools and you can only afford one of those things, you're going to just pay the bills.. I've done well in my career and I've decided to work full time at helping find a solution to our broken industry.. Im glad to see a few others are also trying to do their part. If you have any questions or wanna discuss any topics, I'm game.. I'm not a big social media guy (first comment ever on KZbin), but it's time to get out there. I'm planning to tour around a few states doing projects with my crew and taking more classes (you can never stop learning something new).. but I want go around and meet with other installers that care about the industry, share experiences, and maybe learn a trick or 2. . Classes are good but on jobsite is where the unforseen hurdles that need problem solving begin. . I'm thinking it's time for me to get a few RVs and hit the road with my crew. lol

Your videos are great to watch, you make it look so easy and explain everything really well. I started getting into commercial carpet repairs and have a problem row cutting with worn carpet. Should I just double cut and seam seal all edges? Also that seam sealer has issues in California. Last time I was at my local shop, they told me Cali made them change a key ingredient and now the stuff turns solid in the squeeze bottle. So I'm stuck using the white sealer... great video though keep up the great work!

Nice work...i like to watch you because it seems like u were trained like i was..we are very similar the way we approach things..the only thing i woulda done differently is on the double cut i woulda used scissors to finish the cut on the bottom piece that didnt cut all the way thru instead of the knife to keep the fibers from pulling an fraying..but props an the seam sealer gully good idea..you dont take shorts cuts..neither do i...i hear installers talk about how good they are cuz they do 150 to 200 yards a day..how i measure how good u are is how nice u can make it look an how long your work holds up an not goin back for a repair...thats why im at the top of the pay scale in my area ..not braggin jus sick of all the hacks out there doin 200 yards a day of garbage work..your very good buddy👍..would love to do jobs with u i think you would be surprised how similar we install

Long time this is Russell Sherry it's against my carpet religion 😂 to double cut any carpet especially level loops ,ollifin ,nylons, wools, ect. There's always a better way you just have to find it and know your product, each carpet is different, because of my carpet carving experience.ive learned product has it's own personalality, you just have to find it residential you Excell at commercial it's exceptial only. in my opinion only.when you double cut that it gave me goose bumps.lol. I wish you the best and I'll keep watching thanks.

Some carpets there is no other way t cut the seam . Dont know why people talk about not double cutting comercial carpets that dont allow a rowfinder threw its fibers and complain instead of suggesting a solution.
