I think that's a regular snapping turtle, not an alligator snapper. As a 9 or 10 year old in the 1960s, buddies and I caught some to sell to this old lady We boiled them and scraped out the meat. She was too kind to tell us we did it wrong. We later found out you can get several different meats out of them. I never did learn the right way to clean them.

This has happened to me TWICE while jogging in PA. Was able to get them both safely across the road with the help of nearby homeowners, a bucket and a broomstick.

Viva......I wouldn't even mess with snapping turtles. You can obviously easily lose a finger. They can use their tails to propel themselves at you as well. And those necks....are longer than they appear. I've tried to help them out....or show my kids why they should not....over the decades. Thanks for the great content David....

Which direction was he heading when you encountered him? You are supposed to have him continue in THAT direction. They migrate to new ponds. There are safe handling methods. Hatchlings can be picked up by the back edge of the shell. Some people get them on the floor mat of a car and drag the mat. If you have a box and can coax it in, you can carry it to safety.

I had a similar situation. What worked for me was not to push the turtle, but get him to grab the stick and pull him forward.

I have encountered snapping turtles on roadways before. I was able to safely pick them up and carry them across in the direction they were facing with no issues. They are heading across the road for a reason (I suspect females may be heading to or from a location where they lay eggs) so do not try and turn them around. You just have stay away from the business end.

A couple summers ago, I was out biking and found a snapper in the middle of the road. I stopped, took a pic, and continued on my way. I'm not crazy enough to poke them.

It might have been a female wanting to go lay it's eggs somewhere across the road in the direction it was heading. It might try again to get across the road.
