A cancelled flight is a rite of passage for travellers. I finally managed my first 'sleeping in an airport terminal overnight' just last year. Great video. It made me smile when you caught up with family and friends.

My first flight I ever took alone ended up getting cancelled and it was a very stressful (but now I see it as important) learning experience. I was 18 so not a kid but stuck in an unfamiliar city without friends or family but luckily a woman who was well seasoned with travel helped me figure out where to get a hotel provided by the airline along with food vouchers and complimentary travel packs since our bags with all our toiletries were already in our destination cities. I was lucky to have found a kind stranger to help me out and now I know exactly what to do if my flight ever gets cancelled again

Also reminds me of the last time I flew out of Nashville on American with a connection in Dallas. I made it to DFW, but like you, my next leg got cancelled. Thank goodness for having an older brother in Dallas who was kind enough to let me crash at his place overnight. The upside? I got to pay my niece a surprise visit at her school and bring her lunch. :-)
