Not every musician is a rockstar. Not every animator works at Disney. You may never get to the dream you started with, alright, but you don't have to be a prodigy just to get a decent job 🤷♂

as a less than 1 year junior animator i cannot agree more, but it is so hard to define whether you have the talent or not. i thought im good at it, but out there are so many people who is better than me. so it is so easy to doubt yourself. people needs unbiased point of view to critic their talent.

I wish this video came out some years ago and could make me see the reality. This person that you describe as being stubborn and blinded by his own dream and passion is very relatable to me as myself, I learnt animation from the best, but couldn't get job still even after that. I was praised by industry pros but I was still struggling, eventually I was able to land something big for myself but it didn't lasted long. Soon after the animation industry face a huge strike and entire system shook and guess what!! Nobody wants to hire me anymore. Being jobless for 6 months and counting, made me realise that if I was this special, why am I not good enough and not getting hired ? But I am happy this happened and I saw the difference between what I wanted to be good at VS what initially I was good at. I was good in another field where I topped my school on that subject but I left that for my passion for animation. I do not regret one bit that I chose animation, because I loved this field and happy that I could contribute to this industry for so many years. But it's about time to accept that my main power lies in another domain and this time I am not blinded by anything. Thank you for this video Alessandro, I was thinking all this for a long long time and now I understand all that deeply❤.

"Follow your dreams" quote is about working at it, not just sit around and have a dream to achieve something you like and it'll magically come to you. If you REALLY like working on something and it's your PASSION, you will work at it and believe me if you do work at it hard enough you get pro at whatever it is you like doing and people will notice. People will notice and you'll get hired! Indeed, Follow your dreams by working towards it. Thanks

@@acamporota If it's your passion of course you'd work hard at it and I touched on this in my later comment. There must be a call for art from young age and be part of you intrinsically to do something meaningfull that get's you noticed and of course be out to get noticed. Without going out to meet people and sitting in the cave won't get you anywhere besides getting discovered when the artist is long gone then cherished. Thanks

I really enjoy listening to your ideas and thoughts. I don’t agree with all the time but it’s important to hear different points of view. I think how the tide is changing so fast currently in animation and games etc. this harsh reality must be addressed unfortunately. Thank you sir, for all of your hard work.

I started studying 3D animation in a more serious way 2 years ago. I feel like my animation has evolved a lot over time, and it still has to evolve a lot more. I want to become an animator and make a living from it. I still haven't found a job in the area, and in the part where Alessandro talks about having an artistic inclination to work in this area, that affected me a little. I confess that sometimes I have doubts about my ability, sometimes I look at some of my colleagues and see this artistic inclination, and I compare myself to them to see if I have it too. Anyway, this is a very good video to reflect on reality and the paths of life. The video Alessandro is very interesting. I will continue studying, practicing, talking to tutors, to improve my animation.

A very similar thing exists in the programming world, at least in the circles I move in. People often ask my programmer friends to "show them some tricks so they can get in the industry", and they lack the most basic requirement, which is an engineering mindset. Sure, they can follow instructions, that's fine, but they lack the individuality and the initiative of someone with such a mindset. The main point is that, if you do not have the *right stuff* for the job, you aren't fit to solve unexpected and unknown problems that happen, and they will happen more often than one would expect; and that is perfectly fine! If you really want to get into animation despite not being fit for it, there's plenty of other neighboring fields that are not animation per sé which might be a better fit for you in terms of skills and mindset. Honestly, I haven't met a single technical artist who wanted to be one from the start, but they usually slid into those roles after figuring out that they are better suited for that type of a role, rather than being pure artists.

My suggestion is it's better to reduce negativity in your video thumbnail and videos, KZbin tricks content creators mind to get more views for their videos Coming back to the topic, career is not the ultimate thing in life it's just a part of life, after all we are all one as human, success changes it' definition time to time it never ends, so keep working no need to worry about anything 👍😊

Not interested in the algorithm... I am interested in being direct... Talking about the topic.. The word success is used to quote the narrative I am discussing about... Not because you need to be rich... You can keep working as much as you want... But again... is not enough to do well in this career... And yes you need to be worried instead.. If you study animation for 5 years, no job, and no other b plan, you are in trouble... Unless you live with your parents for the rest of your life

I agree that its extremely important to be self critical ( no delusion between what you desire and what is ACTUALLY happening) but at the same time, if you have a dream, discipline, pure hunger.. I don't think NOT pursuing your dream would be any better than putting my time into this, its not like it is a one time thing.. your skills, experience also compound over time. I just don't posses that this isn't for me mentality for anything.. It is also easy to delusional, self awareness is needed to not fall in that trap.. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be an animator (not 2D haha) ,Thanks Alessandro for raising awareness

I figured this out my senior year and decided to go for a more stable major while focusing on learning game design on my own. Better option anyway because the only courses I could get animation related were at the community college level so I would be wasting time and I wanted to be independent and not work under anyone and the stability of this path is way more clear and is dependent on what I do

But now a question comes in mind: How do you find the right balance between being too optimistic (thinking that everything will work out well if you put the time and effort) and being too negative (thinking that this industry is too hard and that the chances of having a good career are too low)?

What a great message! Passion and talent are not always go along with each other. Sport is the best example, you can play basketball all days and do best tranings with the best trainers, but you won't become the best basketball player in the world, hard work is not enough if you weren't born with that extra thing - ability. Saying that everyone can achieve this or that, is very motivational, but it's simply not true, you won't break Usain Bolt record, it's just impossible for regular human being, even despite hard work and dedication. Truth hurts.

Are they dreaming about becoming animators to make money or becuase it is their passion since their childhood to create something meaningful that is derived from their personality and character and have great drive to show the world their creation? If we're talking about just making money then this is sad! Also they have to have a character and personality, be likable to be accepted in the "club" and only way to achieve likablility is to really belive that you have what it takes and have a call and passion otherwise i'm afraid you'll come across as fake and dreaming on money not creation. Myasaki didn't start animating because he wanted to make money but because he LOVED moving pictures or look at Tarantino, he's passion was to create a movie not because he wanted to sell it. Do what you love and money will find its way to you! Thanks

Hi Alessandro! Let me share my bit of experience. I had to give up on my dreams thrice to become sorta successful. When I was a kid I also wanted to be a rockstar. My parents bought me american fender Stratocaster which was even better than any of my dreams of the time. Day and night I was playing, singing, making songs, because of my guitar I could enter any band I wanted, and I became somewhat good at it but not enough to go big. People are still impressed when I perform music and it got me many friends, but that’s it. I also had a hobby of being a mod maker. I could spend an infinite amount of time making my perfect Skyrim mod. But it didn’t go well cause I had unrealistic expectations. Still I got my composition and environment creation skills from there (I made a couple of square kilometres of dense forest which came out beautiful but unoptimised). I also was doing some meme videos at KZbin. I got better and better at it, did some epic collaborations and reached 25k subscribers, had fans and was planning to do merchandise, but due to copyright claims, I was forced to stop making my time consuming videos cause I wasn’t getting an enny for it, just an occasional donation which is not enough for a man with family. So I gave up there, I’m still making my last video for that channel, and when I finish it’s gotta be over. Gone. Yet I got my video editing skills from this dream, a lot more friend and even a loving wife! After that I finally got a job as a video editor and then a motion designer. But at a certain point had like a crisis of identity, so I had thought what can be my passion in that field. And then I remembered I always loved game trailers, watched them a million times. I went into gamedev motion design and after a half a year of hard work I became a team lead, and after another half - a cinematic artist. This is the first time in my long history of trial and error where I can both do what I like and have good offers and career opportunities. So it’s like a NG+++ when I finally became sorta good at life (at 27 years old). At this point I can’t say it’s pure luck. My previous dreams helped me a lot and made myself a better artist. During my life I’ve understood the valuable lessons - you must have it in you, you must work ALL your spare time to achieve something, and it has to be a proper craft. I had a privilege to start over and have my way of trial and error. Now I just need to get better at 3d animation and maya in general for a professional growth, and that’s why I’m stuck on the animation channels sometimes :) Seriously considering taking animation as a hobby to make dailies and quick sketches. Thank you for reading this! Maybe see you in Riot one day, who knows!

@@acamporota so true! Yet If I was given the full knowledge at my 15 or 16 I think I`d focus on what I do now. I remember opening up blender and throwing it away in 17 because my laptop couldnt handle render (all money spent on a guitar). Dreaming of gamedev, I knew thats a hard work but its also very hard to find a clue or a mentor when you are in an open field. Also switching is very hard! You always sacrifice something when you do. Recently I had a challenge to get a student of mine (former HR from unrelated field) from zero to hero - to get him a job actually. It took me all my influence and a lot of time, but he finally made it as a creative motion designer in one year, able to do his job proper as a professional without my help. That was the moment I understood I dont like teaching at all despite probably being able to do it :D I am more of a learner and self-centered, just dont have it in me and cant do it with real passion. But I`ve proven a point you can grow really fast even from a zero level with the right mentorship.

Hello Alessandro. I am using a translator, but I hope the message will be clear. Your video is 100% true. Our health, appearance, including intellectual and creative abilities depend on genetics. No matter how hard you try, you still won’t be able to jump above your head. This is genetic determeninism. It’s a shame that it’s not customary to talk about this nowadays. It's sad but true.

I do not believe in this and I am against it, positive motivation and passion drives us forward. Yes, we do have to be realistic, but your words keep people from trying and that might just be the worst thing you can do from this space and voice you have in the internet. So please, give a thought about the message you are trying to give, cause for so long I have felt that your videos only drive people away from being passionate about their possible careers. You have the experience and the visibility and with great power comes great responsibility, so use it wisely.
