As always Layne keeps showing time after time that "the secret" to longevity really is in fundamentals like: calorie control to avoid being fat, minimizing refined/processed food, getting all the micronutrients, working out/cardio, sleeping well, avoiding stress/alcohol/ciggs/drugs/ etc. Though it would be cool if one of those "bio hacks" were true and there was some very easy magic way to ensure longevity 😅

what if people need higher calorie intake? do they still need to avoid calories?
@Akaki19992 жыл бұрын
@@batman-sr2px Refined/processed foods tend to be very high palatable while having lot of calories but lacking in nutrients. basically they are hyperpalatable caloric dense foods that make you want to eat more, they don't fill you up, leave you craving for more, etc. all of that can cause serious binges for lot of people, it's better to be minimized because of that. By calories I didn't mean avoiding them but rather controlling them based on your maintenance. like as you said what if one needs higher caloric intake to sustain their weight, by all means they should get that amount of calories. basically trying to not be in caloric surplus if your goal isn't to gain weight.

@@batman-sr2px Nothing, nobody understands the definition of “processed food”. They use it as a buzz word because they don’t understand nutrition enough. “Processed food” includes, dairy, egg whites, precut fruit, bacon, canned meats, canned veggies etc. “processed” just means it was changed from its original form. So their is nothing wrong with “processed foods”. It’s about limiting highly palatable and nutrient absent food. Which granted that is more complicated to explain what those foods are than simply saying “processed foods”. Which is why nutrition simpletons just stick with demonizing the word “processed”.
@AnotherFancyUser2 жыл бұрын
@@batman-sr2px As other stated, "processed food" is the change of one form to another, for example when you eat a rare or medium or whatever steak, that meat was processed (by cooking it). We are talking about 'ultra processed foods' this means you cant do it in your house, you have to do in in some sort of plant or industry. What is wrong with this type of foods, as other stated, almost to none vitamins and minerals, very calorie dense (A lot of calories in a small volume) and this is important because one of the regulation of hunger (Ghrelin) stop (Leptin) when certain % of Cubic centimeters of food or liquids filled the stomach, in regards of non calorie dense but big volume are salads or vegetables in general (plus they are the king in giving you vitamins, minerals). But there is one point I wanted to mention that is the most important one, as other stated these foods are hyperpalatable, this means that, the idea is for you to keep eating them, which makes sense because the idea of selling you a product is for you to use it again. There is a terminology in food production called the "Bliss Point" and the idea is to put the perfect amount of sugar, salt, fat and other chemicals to make you crave it for more. Now... ethical? unethical? in an almost free market you decide, but it is important to know that these things exists.

since the insulin and glucose elevation isn't as steep you could benefit from this approach by going for a 10 minute walk straight after a meal! High Insulin response means your body will primarily focus on storage and not not use fuel for energy! with less Insulin the glucose is slowly entered the bloodstream allowing you to use that glucose to for immediate energy usage...like going for a brisk walk which would mean you are slowly clearing out the glucose and not leaving it in the bloodstream to accumulate and eventually your body will have to store it in fat cells because the concentration of glucose is higher than it would have been if you cleared it out by that walk! so combine her order method with physical activity straight afterwards!

Any diabetic (or type 1 at least) will experience this on a near daily basis. It's why insulin pumps are so amazing, as are the non-stop glucose meters in your arm to see how you react to certain foods, not in term of total carbs but when they absorb and makes it easier to eat them next time without feeling shit. It's still worthwhile to consider, prioritise your priority. For most people the micronutrients of vegetables and protein are more important than the carbs, so if you're satiated and don't finish your carbs it's not a big deal, for a bulking bodybuilding with a low apitite it might be the opposite and missing a few veggies is less harmful for their goals.
@batman-sr2px2 жыл бұрын
how do these glucose meters work? do you measure before eating something, then measure again after like an hour of eating?
@esmee63082 жыл бұрын
@@batman-sr2px I think they're called continious glucose meters (CGM). It's a tiny sensor on your arm that measures the interstitial glucose levels 'continiously' (every minute or so) and syncs through bluetooth on your phone (or insuline pump) and makes a graph inside an app. Where I'm from health insurance (can) cover it for type 1 diabetics or very problematic type 2 diabetics. Though they're available on the open market as well. Definitely a luxury product but my parents have gotten some good insight on their eating habits and insulin useage as response due to it. Almost no spikes up or down anymore (outside the usual, non-diabitics also spike after a high carb meal.)

What about sugar crash in high glucose meals? can changing the eating order and slowing down the glucose entering the bloodstream result in being better energized? I remember reading that it's better to avoid sugar crashes by eating foods with mixed carb glycemic indices because they average out (for example a simple carb with a lower glycemic index one) where as proteins are independent (for example whey is digested fast whether or not there is casein in the same shake)

But a longer infusion of glucose into the blood stream will result in less of a crash or at least an immediate crash meaning you won't get that lethargic feeling shortly after eating and are less likely to grab a snack. Another reason it could be good is that you might be less likely to eat all the carbs because you're already getting full from the protein and veg. Another reason.... if it's fries or potatoes, letting them go cold while you eat your steak and veg (for example) means you're getting resistant starch which has a much lower insulin response!

I always agree with your arguments since they are logical, and unbiased but, in this case it felt like you skipped an important fact Which is the spike! (and also the crash) 1. You can see in the graph you shared, that if you eat carbs first you will get a much higher spike in blood glucose and insulin But if you eat carbs last you get a lower spike and the blood glucose level stays relatively constant, meaning you don't get that crash and sleepiness after you a couple of hours of eating. 2. For people with diabetes who take insulin this may be very significant, because if they eat carbs last they can take less insulin 3. I think we can agree that high level of insulin is bad for the body in the long run

As a T2 diabetic I can say that what I eat WITH my carbs definitely impacts how big the spike in blood sugar is. If I eat carbs with a healthy serving of protein, fat, or both, the spike amplitude is lower based on using a CGM, but the area under the curve is pretty much the same. I don’t find food order to matter, since I don’t eat the things on my plate one at a time. But the overall macros in the meal do affect my glycemic response. It does not affect my weight, because, calories are the same.

I usually really like your videos, but here, you made it a bit too simple. She might have exaggerated a bit with the benefits, but you turn it the other way and act like it is all bullshit. In the graphs that you show, you clearly see that the blood sugar levels are way more stable when you do not eat carbs first. I would assume that this is positive for concentration, if you don't have the quick highs and lows? Then, you say yourself that the group who did eat carbs first has a lower glucose level after 180 minutes. Well what does that mean? They are hungry again and want to eat. Contrary to the other group, who feels satiated for longer. So that is a benefit in and of itself. Of course you would not see much of a benefit if you match calories in a study, but if you feel less hungry, you will probably eat less food, which will make it easier to consume less calories. You are ignoring that aspect and I would have found it interesting to hear more about that.
