A patient developed a severe infection, skin cracks and peeling after visiting a salon for a pedicure. She states the nail technician used a foot scraper to remove calluses from her feet. The infection is mirrored on both feet.

I have been licensed in mutiple states, aesthetician and nail technician. I follow state board rules to the letter. I keep my insurance up. I keep my implements sterilized and sanitized. Throw away any implements that can't be put in the autoclave. Etc. Inthe 40 years I have been in the business I have never had any clients have any problems. I clean between clients as well.

As a licensed nail tech I have to say that a professional, licensed nail tech does NOT use these "cheese graters". And THIS is why. It causes small cuts in the skin where bacteria, germs and fungus can enter.

I'm a medical nail tech in Ohio. Our board rules prohibit the use of any blades by nail techs. The cheese grater is considered a blade. Not sure about DC regulations, but I would call the board and report this.

its absolutely ridiculous that this woman had to go thru all that pain and discomfort just because somone was negligent at the nail salon and didnt clean things properly. i think they should be notified and possibly shut down until they are insprcted and are proven to be cleaning everything in between each client and also have to reimburse you for at least a portion of your medical costs. i would for sure be sooo pissed if i was her!

Natalie Sweatland if you go to reputable salons (not the Chinese nail salons) but real hair and nail salons, they are fine. You also must make sure that they have a board certified license to practice. I would report them to the state board. I am a license Cosmetologist and massage therapist. I always sanitize EVERYTHING!! This is just a disgrace!!! She should sue that salon.

Microplane (cheese graters) foot tools are meant to be used on DRY skin, not wet. It can cause small cuts on wet skin. I use one but it's my own and I always use it dry. Sounds like her salon needs a refresher on methods and disinfection routines.

Becky Holdford you’re right! Plus when you soak your feet they cannot tell the healthy tissue from dead tissue. I had a salon here bring out tools from the autoclave, in the sleeve, but it wasn’t sealed! I took my daughters and left! They were upset but I told them that if they aren’t sealed in the bag they’re likely reusing them to make it seem like they’re clean. When my daughters got acrylics and the brought out a used Emory file out of the drawer I said that’s illegal here as well! My girls are 17 and 20 and I cannot keep them from doing those things but with some education on what to look for they’re more informed going in. This isn’t intended to be racial at all but I tell them if the prices are dirt cheap, nothing is labeled, and you cannot understand them then that’s a red flag. I said look on yelp and find someone who has a good reputation and won’t use illegal stuff. You might pay more but considering your health is at stake that is worth it!

The liner keeps the bowl clean but not the lines. The lines are supposed to run with a disinfectant between clients. Most places don't do because it takes approx ten minutes. To salons like that time is money.

Awesome Job Doctor! In Texas NO cheese grater, razors, foot scraper or anything, Nothing that could cut the feet. Her feet Looks infectioned and with fungus. A lot people go to see a Doctor for infection contagious disease doctor. Here in Texas a lot of nail salons. The State board of cosmetologist has been give out fines $2,000 and up. Because of a lot of Nail Salons was using windex in their sanitizer containers, sanitize it cost a lot More then Windex . Windex is cheaper but not a sanitizer for a your tools. I am a license operator and instructor here in Texas. You are telling her the Truth, Here in Texas they have to use a foot soak liner in each Tub for each client. Tools in salon like the others tools. It take 10 minutes sanitize your implements , in 90% alcohol, bleach and EPA are approved by state board as a sanitizer. State board is going into the nail salon and testing everything now because the high volume of infections In Texas after going to the salon And The Hot Wax is still not sanitary because I have seen them take the ball of Hot wax off your feet and place it back Into the Hot Wax container, I never get hot wax anymore. Nail Salons They are also using a cheaper power for Nail pouring into a name brand bottle for nail . All kinds of Huge Fines in Texas . You can see all fine information on State Board .gov.

I’m so horrified that this should happen after a visit to a nail salon. Surely they are subject to regular visits from some authority. Ours are subject to random visits from environmental health. I’m pretty sure that each person has to be registered and to display their certificates. The poor lady must be in so much pain. Thank goodness she came to the gentlest podiatrist I’ve ever seen. Surely there is somewhere that she can report these people. I’d love to see all salons with a small autoclave unit where instruments can be sterilized properly.

THIS, is EXACTLY why when I’m treating my feet for frequent ingrown big toenails after working hospital security detail, I ALWAYS keep my tools cleanly and disinfected using good ol’ “Barbicide” and with the COVID-19 pandemic I’m full-swing, I take zero chances. I simply couldn’t imagine the amount of not only the physical pain and discomfort presented to the patient let alone the heartbreaking embarrassment and negative self-esteem that follows suit..and sadly, this condition of which she’d been afflicted with is a sublime example as to why ‘SANITATION IS KEY’ and what the consequences entail from lack of hygiene on the salon and their equipment.

I remember when I took my mother to have her toenails clipped (in Virginia)...I was SO embarrassed that she wouldn't let me care for her feet and that they had gotten so bad. I was so ashamed in thinking the Dr. would judge us, or me for the way her toenails looked. I thought they would think I didn't LOVE my mom....but she wouldn't LET me care for her feet. Then one day , hallelujah, she said "I'll go get these ol' nails clipped." It made me feel so good to have a Dr. who cared. Thank God for Podiatrists

I know what you mean, but I would rather Dr. Jefferson had the closest view for doing what he is doing here. It is delicate work. Mind you, quite a bit was close up I thought.

I think that pedicures are wonderful, just dont go to a cheap salon where they may or may not be licensed.

I am very glad we have so many regulations in Germany regarding hygiene in nail salons even the cheap ones are safe to visit. They all display sanitizers and you can actually see how they use it on the tools. Poor lady.
