It’s actually a bit of a misconception that Dan Burn becomes a 3rd centre half when we’re in possession. Maybe at the start of the season that was a feature of our defence to allow Trippier to essentially play RW, but opposition teams cottoned on to it and would just squeeze the pitch to the right so there was never an out ball to the left-wing. More recently Burn has been trusted to get forward, often overlapping the left winger and staying high and wide to stretch the play and provide a threat on the left which means the opposition can’t press us to the right and then double or triple up on Trippier and Almiron/Murphy- this is where a lot of our attacks came from towards the back end of the season

Newcastle’s possession stats are far superior to many sides in the PL now, particularly at home - no longer merely a counter attack side, there’s far more to this side than before (and mostly with the same players too, many of which were in the Championship).
