Stock hp is all over the place on these according to the year. The high water mark for them was a 1969 4 barrel with 10.4 compression. Factory rated them at 290. I never have saw a stock one on the dyno. My brother still has his mustang he bought in 69. Donnie.

That mechanical dyno reminds me of 1950s sci fi where the scientist is staring thoughtfully at a wall of dials and blinking lights. After all, the cutting edge in computers were the size of an office at the very least back then.

They still sell them as crate motors, but Ford does not put them in any current production vehicle. And they made around 210 hp back then, not sure what newer ones made.

I bought a total loss 69 or 70 Cougar back in 71, I believe it was a xr7 model. It had a 351w rated 290 hp, took it out with tranny , a c4, put it in a 65 f-100 swb. When I floored it, that motor seemed it had more than 290 hp.

@@olblu8746 I know of people that made that swap, they would fool the heck out of people with stock 350s. I always liked the Windsor( liked the SBCs too, another story)

You are obviously a very smart guy and have probably forgotten more than I know about cars, but please put a wall in your dyno room separating the test bed from the control panel. Carbon monoxide does not know it's supposed to stay in the exhaust hoses. By the way; nice engine. I would love to put something like that in an early Saleen Mustang clone. (Clones are cooler anyway because you can put together the best parts of different models, and how awesome would it be to have car #69)?

depending on which build it is 10 to 14 degrees before top dead center @ 600 rpm. per my little cheat book from ford service

they did only have about 200. they were advertised as having 235 BHP right on the stock valve covers.

My 69 351 had alot more than 200 hp. Judging by the way my 65 f-100 ran, probably 290 hp was very conservative. The motor came out of a cougar.

Early 351W '69-'70 rated 290 HP with 4 bbl. carb... then they put tiny valves in, lowered the compression ratio, and blocked off the exhaust ports with thermactor bosses... giving 200-235 HP after that...

supershark 9k with a 2 barrel carb 250 hp. With a 4 barrel 290 hp. The came stock either way. Mine is a 1 barrel and gets 20+ mpg.
