FORD 4R70W TRANSMISSION SLOW GEAR SHIFT - 1-2 ACCUMULATOR KIT

My truck developed a slow and delayed shift from 1st to 2nd gear. It was a problem, especially when trying to merge on to the freeway under hard accelerations. The engine would rev up high and not have any gear engagement. After removing the pan and replacing damaged 1-2 accumulator springs along with piston, it fixed my issue up.

I have a 1999 F-250 Light Duty with a 4.6L and 4R70W. I noticed my 1-2 shift was delayed. Opened it up and my config was a little different on the springs. My top spring was brown and my bottom spring was white. My bottom spring was broken. Thanks for posting this it took me about 3 hours total to fix it.

Thank you so much man!!! Ford literally told me I needed a new transmission. I saw your video and found out my bottom spring which happened to be white was broken, changed that,drained the torque converter and change the filter and it's shifting good with no issues.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm not experienced with auto transmissions to much but I dropped the pan this afternoon and was checking these accumulator springs cause i read they are for 2nd gear which my transmission just skips 2nd gear. My spring is broke and I didnt know the technical terms for my problem till I watched your vid

@@michaelwilliams4974 i ordered the springs and ordered new piston too. When i get them replaced, I'll know if the spring was the issue. Some reason I have my doubts that that the broken spring is the issue but it might be. I hope it is

Good job, yo! Man oh man I'm appreciative of how much room there is under the 4x4 version of an F150. Pulled my fuel tank to replace the pump last week without jacking it up. Transmission valve body and accumulator service I'm doing next week should be a breeze! But I really, really hope I don't find that much friction material in my pan. This old girl has 190k on the clock and is experiencing hard shifts into reverse, and from 2-3/3-2. No slippage though. Tows 3500lbs (my TT) solid. But man going into reverse kicks you in the seat.

That was freedom friction lol i might of done standing burnouts, more like one wheel peel but still fun. I already changed my reverse drum clutch band, it went out, that’s what usually goes on the 4r70w. I didn’t do the work, as you have to disassemble the whole trans.

Before draining the trans I bought a Sterilite gift paper storage container and used it as a drain pan. It was large enough to catch any overspill without worry.

Accumulators are like pressure plate on manual transmission. They function to absorb the pressure from clutch engagements when car is shifting. So if you have heavy foot and drive aggressive with high rpm and when the gear shifts you will send lots of pressure of oil in it and causes spring to work more hard and finally snaps.

Been having a issue with 1st to 2nd it drops out of gear on real light pedal acceleration around 30mph I'm wondering if this could be my problem.

Check your oil level. Usually when you are low on oil it will pops out of the gear.

How did you turn the engine to reach the torque converter screw?

I used a ratchet and socket, i placed it on the crank pulley and turned it clock wise (like you want to tighten it) the engine will turn slowly and u can see the torque converter move. Good luck, it’s really easy.

I'm having the same exact problem on my 97 mustang could this be it? I've changed both vss and the tps fluid looked okay not super bright red but was still red.

If your car can take off decent from the start it could be. One symptom is that it won't change to second gear if you are on the accelerator, soon as you lift it shifts, by depressing the gas paddle it jumps back to 1st gear. But if your car is hesitant on moving from the start it's pretty much a reverse drum clutch. This clutch band holds your planetary gears. (this would be a fault if many standing burnouts) But then again, each trans is different.

Pretty much could be, but if you did lots of standing burnouts it could be your reverse drum clutch, but pretty sure it could be just accumulator. Easy to see and never bad thing to install new parts to replace the old worn out.

Did this have a hard shift into 2nd? (Mine barks tires and snatches at medium or fast acceleration but if I let off throttle and then accelerate it does fine) How did you determine it was this issue and not shift solenoids?

In the beginning, mine was doing super-fast shifts and then they became super slow, had to let go of the gas to get to 2nd gear. If it was selenoid you wouldn't have second gear, it would skip gears, would premature shift as well. It also could be a valve body, but you won't know unless you drop the pan. The accumulator is very easy to diagnose, one locking c-clip, and the whole unit is out. Plus it's nice to change the oil along with the filter.

@@macknumber9 typically a hard 1-2 shift is due to broken lower spring in 1-2 accumulator. The shifts solenoids typically have nothing to do with this problem. No telling what a shop would tell you if letting them do the job...

U don’t have too, i did it since i wanted fresh oil in the system. If you don’t drain it you will only change about 5 quarts of oil.

@@AmelsGarage well I got my parts in. My spring was broken in three pieces as well. I made a little mess draining the fluid and has to borrow my cousins snap ring pliers. My harbor freight ones are a joke. Got a new filter and put the pan back on and she shifts smooth as silk again. It wasn't even going into second before, straight to 3rd. Thanks again for the video.
