Great videos Brian. I have just helped the owner of a 2012 F150 Ecoboost replace the latest of the 4 pumps this truck has had since new. The vehicle only has 154,000 km (about 95,500 miles). The original pump was changed under the 2017 recall just before this owner took possession from the Ford dealer in March 2018 at about 100,000 km (60,000 miles). Since then, the owner has paid the dealer to replace that recalled pump in 2020 just a little over 2 years ago ( the replacement warranty is 24 months, this one lasted 30 months so the dealer declined to replace it at their expense). The newest unit was purchased and shipped from RockAuto for just over $800 CDN and is identical to the last dealer installed Ford pump. The kicker here is that the Ford price is over $1000 CDN just for the pump alone, no labour. I was a parts specialist for a Ford dealership for 11 years between 1970 and 1981 while working through my mechanic’s apprenticeship. I have seen some examples of poor product back then and since, but this pump was an engineering fail of master proportions. No vacuum pump design should ever allow the pumped air or exterior water/dirt contaminated air to run through its crankcase and bearings. As a final note, the third Ford pump was made in the Czech Republic so the question is, did Ford ask a supplier for a cheap vacuum pump or did Ford provide the full design specs to that supplier? The answer will point the finger of blame.

My 2011 F150 EB with 62,400km vacuum pump assembly failed as you described in July 2015. Ford will not cover under warranty. Pump cost $515.99 + $160.50 labour (CDN). I had heard that Ford changed to a mechanical pump in 2013. It is definitely a safety issue and should be a mandated recall. By the time the vacuum boost activated the brakes I had driven through the intersection at the end of the street.

Have a 2011 F-150 with 80K miles and it's been making the noise for almost a year now. No issues with the brakes but the pump was increasing in noise. Part is $345 from Rock Auto and it went in like a charm. Over $450 from the local Ford dealer. If you can screw in a light bulb, you can replace this. Ford gets $300 in labor to replace this and it took me 30 minutes - I need to get paid that hourly rate... Took the ends off to see the diaphragm and there was a ton of corrosion inside. Worse than the video. Surprised the pump even worked. I agree the new plastic replacement shouldn't corrode so much as the aluminum original.

So I had the pump replaced by the dealer through the recall. Pulling out of the lot, loud brake noise from now from REAR of truck. Asked the adviser, he gives me a line about condensation from the car wash. Obviously that is not the problem. Week passes. Noise still occurs every time after truck has been turned off for about 10-15 minutes, (not as bad if truck has been idling) and when truck moves forward or back, no brake applied. noise goes away after about 20 seconds. Dealer now says my brakes are bad and I need a complete brake job, including 4 new rotors. I think the problem has something to do with the vacuum pump replacement. Thoughts?

I have a 2012 F-150. My symptoms were hard brake pedal on cold startup when backing up and hard brake pedal when I drove long distance going forward. I would tap on the brake and it would get soft, but than it felt like built up pressure again and the brake pedal would get very hard again. I took my truck to the dealership and they replace the vacuums pump, took three trips... I drove my truck and I am not getting the brake issues going forward however I am still dealing getting hard brake pedal on cold startup when backing up. I took it back to the dealership this week and the tech said he felt the hard pedal in reverse on cold startup and wants to try replacing the ABS sensor. So is the flex part of this Ecoboost engine experience? I am buying the last model year of 2020 and want to get the Ecoboost for the extra power but wanted to know if all Ecoboost engines have problems and if I should stick with the non Ecoboost? The reason I want the flex is because the space that crossover has meets all our family needs. Checked out the Durango and has no trunk space, checked out the traverse but it's almost the same as the enclave space wise and I am not a mini van kind of guy so the flex met my needs, even the explorer felt a little cramped from the second row seating. And I need the 3rd row lol, I checked out an expedition but it's too expensive for the base model. 🤔

FordTechMakuloco Thank you. Hey if you ever do a video on TSB 14-0134, I would really love that. I see lots of guys talking about the noise (moaning or groaning sound coming from the transmission apparently) and that TSB is supposed to fix it. I'm curious what all is involved, but someone posted notes from their repair docs that said a separator plate and a seal was installed....so it sounds pretty simple and hopefully cheap. If my warranty runs out before this gets fixed, I'd be willing to pay to have the TSB performed, but I'm hoping the dealer will take care of it under warranty as soon as mine consistently makes that groaning noise and vibration (usually happens under light acceleration as it shifts between gears, around 2000 RPM). Others have reported theirs started out like mine and finally progressed to the noise when shifting from park. So far my noise/vibration is only while driving.

As they have told the government mandate to use the stuff would cause problems, even on new vehicles. So the government should cover any damage it does as their the ones that mandates it's use. Besides using ethanol gives you less milage not more. So it's counter productive. It also raises fuel cost as there are summer blends and winter. IIRC, the engine produces some vacuum, just not enough to maintain all vac functions on the truck, which is why I could feel vacuum and thought my pump was working when it was not.

Had the TSB done on my 2011, they replaced the pump. Still doing it after sitting for a day or two.

Mine started making a terrible grinding sound 6 months after I bought It, so I replaced It from rock auto. It was only $350 after shipping. Just a year later this new one is already making that grinding sound, and from what I have researched that means it’s going to go out soon. Part is $475 now, luckily I have a 2 year warranty on the part so I don’t have to pay for It, but It’s odd to me It already went out…maybe a bigger issue

is this possibly why you have breaking shudder at highway speeds?

I have a 2013 F150 ecoboost XLT....some times, when shifting from reverse to drive (cold and warm) i can hear a groaning sound once the trans goes into drive. It seems to be coming from the middle to the front of the truck, kind of odd. Didn't know if you have experienced this issue. Thanks for any help....oh and my truck has 16K miles. Thanks a bunch!

So i noticed my pump was getting really loud (brakes still feel fine) so i ordered a new one and its doing the same thing. Both the original and new pump are plastic housing. Is it possible i got a defective pump or is there a check valve broken somewhere?
@FordTechMakuloco10 жыл бұрын
Justin Boonstra Pump is self contained I would say if the pump is real noise to exchange it for another new one and go from there it should be nice and quiet.
@justinboonstra390610 жыл бұрын
FordTechMakuloco ok i went ahead and exchanged it but needs to be ordered. i have a short clip of the noise on my youtube if interested. Thanks for the reply and keep up the great vids!

I have a 2014 F150 Ecoboost 4x4 and I'm getting a strange grinding/growling noise under acceleration during the approx. the first 10 - 15 mins of driving. The noise is usually loudest from a complete stop to approx. 45 mph, after this speed I don't really notice it. After the truck is completely warm the noise doesn't seem to be there as well. The noise began happening infrequently but has become louder and more consistent. I have read that people who are also having similar problems find that its an issue with the vacuum pump. It has been to the dealer and they claim they cannot hear it. So far no other immediate problems with the truck. It has right at 30K miles. What is your take on this? Is there anything I can do at home to try and determine the problem. I have visually looked at all the vacuum lines that I can see and they look fine. I would appreciate any input, I'd like to get this problem solved ASAP. Thank you.

Sean Ponce Are you sure it is not the IWES in the front wheels? They are very common on these still and can sound like a grinding brake vibration.
@FordTechMakuloco9 жыл бұрын
FordTechMakuloco I say this because yours being a 14 should not have this stand alone vac pump it should have one that is driven off the passenger rear cam.
@MrGoodtime13019 жыл бұрын
FordTechMakuloco I have also tooken this into consideration after researching exactly how that system works with that said, I have inspected the vacuum lines that run to the hubs to operate the system and they seem to fine. I'm not sure what else I could do in order the determine that it could be a problem with IWES. Any suggestions?
@FordTechMakuloco9 жыл бұрын
Not much else you can do but catch the noise and switch to 4wd when it happens and see if it changes or goes away. The iwe's themselves still fail all the time.

pump needs to be made of all plastic and should be relocated in engine compartment

My recall was done in Aug 2017 and the pump failed again 2 years later. It doesn't seem like the moisture problem was fixed by the recall. Ford Customer Service won't replace a second time; now I have to pay.

Is there a way to prevent it? i.e seal it somehow before it happens?
@FordTechMakuloco9 жыл бұрын
Rob Man You could definitely try a sealer around the end caps. But I think most of it is coming in through the air intake port.

yes it is need for boost situations like highway driving.

I was thinking of buying a Ford because they are cheap and good on gas and my Tundra is getting old. I have an 08 Tundra did nothing but oil changes and breaks. Is it that common to have this much problems for F150's? I need hte truck for work and need to have a reliable work horse.

Marc Vencer Just on the 3.5l ecoboost truck otherwise they are pretty reliable. We don't see too many of them which is really good considering there are allot of them on the road.

I have a 2012. The pump is intermittent. Most of the time it happens at 70 mph. So it is no longer a slow speed problem.

Honestly amazed there isn't some sort of shutter wheel, or hall effect on that motor to monitor it and make sure it is actually turning, or maybe a vacuum switch or something. Funny how something like an electronic smog pump will trigger a check engine light if it seizes. But when this pump seizes up there is no warning indicators at all, even though its a huge safety issue

My thoughts exactly. Wifes brakes completely failed

It looks like the covers were missing a gasket completely. Is there any thing actually there (ie actual gasket or silicone bead)?

@nicholaselias85429 жыл бұрын
mercedes benz did something similar by going with all electronic brake-by-wire brakes... there was an electronic motor that actuated each corner with it's own pressure. Good thing is that it provided amazing stability in skidding/sliding conditions. Bad thing is if it failed you were F$%^d. They provided a small slave piston to actuate the brakes in case of an emergency but it took 10 times the stopping distance/pedal force!!!! And to replace that unit makes this repair seem real cheap lol. Not to mention it made it hard for DIYers to do their own brakes because of the fear of it actuating a piston while it was off the rotor. Little did people know all you have to do is unplug it :)

why didnt they just use hydra boost boosters? makes more scene and works on diesels.

Hydra-boost requires hydraulic power steering to make it work. These new trucks have electric steering.

Just recently bot a 2011, ok so first it needed a timing chain @ 200K, fair enough, since the timing chain looks more like a bicycle chain weak. Anyway the vacuum pump wasn't working, and had hard brakes. I pulled the pump took the motor cover off (4 torx bolts, 2 for the mounting bracket and 2 for the motor cover) and freed up the motor rotation, the rest of the unit was sealed (welded plastic) or I would have tried to recondition the mechanical drive as the pump was still noisy after freeing up the motor. The windings were blackened due to the obvious over current. Put it back in, changed the blown fuse and it worked , sounds like a cement mixer but it works. Here is my point I couldn't see why there is no answer with an aftermarket pump, every part I saw was $600-700 Canadian dollars.
@FordTechMakuloco3 жыл бұрын
The 2011 3.5L Eco F-150 models use a double roller chain that is very intricate. I have never seen a bicycle chain that looks like that. What are you talking about?
@99MikeHamilton3 жыл бұрын
I meant weak by comparison to a heavy old school chain that wouldn't have stretched. Thats what my mechanic said as well. ridiculous
@FordTechMakuloco3 жыл бұрын

The one in my truck was replaced by Ford under either warranty or recall, I'm not sure which. I called to see if they'd replace it again as the truck only has 55k miles on it, and they said no as it had already been done and would charge for the replacement. Now I'm hunting to find one and swap it myself. I'm wondering if anyone has found a long-term fix for this. I'm debating on spraying some sort of oil in the vacuum port at every oil change or something. $400 - $600 every few years is going to get pricey.
