I hope everyone is having a good weekend! I was hoping of reviewing the Toyota tundra v6 twin turbo engine but that did not workout so I figured it was time for me to get my hands dirty on the 5L ford f150.
I have heard good things about this 5L coyote engine in the f150's but it seems like over the years the more powerful ecoboost engines seem to be overshadinging this naturally asperated engine because on paper it is less powerful and gets worse Mpg
but I really enjoyed my time with this 5L engine. the first thing that is usually a good sign is that this engine has been around since 2011 meaning that it is doing something right and ford and the consumers both like it!
The first thing that I really like about this 5L coyote engine in the f150's is how much power you get out of such a small package. ford specifically wanted a small displacement v8 that could compete with much larger displacement v8's. in order to make the same power numbers ford has to upgrade to a dual overhead cam valve train which allowed this engine to rev much higher giving it the advantage it needed!
the second thing I really like about this engine is how ford went with a dual injection direct injection system. they utilize both port injection and direct injeciton to give this engine the benefits of direct injection like more power and better throttle response but it does not suffer some getting carboned up like the GM v8's are.
the third thing I like about this engine is just how fuel efficient it is. this engine is actually incredible efficient and my real world MPG was around 19 which is fantastic for a 400hp v8 engine.
the fourth thing I like about this engine is that it is made in canada and how this engine is made using a modular style of manufacturing helping give reliability and longevity to this engine
this final thing I really like about this engine is how high it revvs up to. this engine will rev to 7,000rpm which is very high for a V8 pick up truck engine.

I will say this is one of the best engines that ford has produced in the last 20 years and definitely a better engine, then a 3.5 eco-boost.

the Eco boost seems to overshadow the 5L because it makes more power and on paper is more fuel efficient but the 5L is by far the better engine.

@@TheGettyAdventures it would be interesting to put both engines to the test loaded and unloaded because my work van with an eco boost gets 14.2 mpg or 16.5 L/100km where the I feel the 5.0 could possibly over come some of the weight and do slightly better. Also longevity of the 5.0L I think would be better considering that’s most of our vans with the 3.5EB have turbo failure before 100,000 miles or 160,000km.

My first truck (hand me down from dad) was a 1994 F150 5.0L V8. I have purchased 2 other trucks since then, just with different (coyote) versions of the 5.0 L V8. Current truck is a 2014 XLT 5.0 with the 6 speed tranny. I am currently at 212,000 miles, and still going strong. When it is time for a new truck I will be buying yet another 5.0 L V8. It has always proven a capable performer that is relatively issue free with regular maintenance and IMHO is the best motor option for the F150.

I have the same one, and, I love it. I am not convinced that spray on liners is going to be a good thing. The difference in displacement is not really meaningful. And, the six speed is better than the new ten speeds. more reliable. And the direct injection has issues, with little benefit.

I have a 21 with the 5.0. It’s a really good engine, pretty fun to drive and sounds great even without any sort of exhaust. I was able to buy in before the pricing went insane. One thing that is notable is how good this engine and truck in general is on long trips. The fuel efficiency on the highway is really good, great passing power and by far the most comfortable seats of any vehicle I have ever owned

How's the cylinder deactivation Is it noticeable? I know Ford had to do it cause of stupid gov regulations but these engines are fuel efficient enough that I don't think cylinder deactivation would really even make much of a difference.

I have a 2018 150 Platinum with this engine. I have 103000 miles on it with no problems. I recently replaced the 10R80 transmission plastic oil pan with a deep well cast aluminum pan. The transmission temp only goes 1/3 of the way on the gage no matter how I drive it.

I have a 2017 150 (gen 2) 5.0l with 160k miles no problems except had to replace the starter. I also have a 2009 F150 4.6l 3V with 357k miles. 0 problems with the engine! Still running great

Have a 1st gen 5.0 in a 2013 f150. It’s been a solid truck. 200k miles and no signs of slowing down. Oil consumption isn’t an issue…no leaks. It’s been a work truck it’s whole life too with way above average idle hours. I think the 1st gen trucks are the best for longevity, with later generations being superior performers.

I have the 2v 4.6 in a 2014 E250 - it gets the job done, but by no means is it winning any races. However, despite its anemic performance, it is proven to be ultra-reliable. I'm just happy to see Ford going back to pushrod V8's in their 3/4 and up trucks. I've always hated how you need to wind the modular units up to get any real power to do real truck stuff...

I finally have a coyote in my Mach 1 mustang and I cannot believe the power out of 307 cubic inches. If you told someone 20 years ago that in 2023 a mustang will have 480 horsepower from a 5.0 NA V8 they would have laughed out of the building. The 03-04 terminator made 390 with a blower. 😂

I have a 2022 F150 v8. I do love my truck but my V8 has been a little inconvenient. I have taken it in because of oil leaking from the driver side timing chain cover from the factory. And they said they fixed it but I just noticed it was leaking again. Under 10,000 miles on my truck. I love everything else but this is a annoying. Thank you for the video.

@@SudburySaturdayNight1787 It is 4wd and has the 3.73 electronic lock rear axle. (Sorry, not really an expert on the ratios, this is how it came!) I have never noticed any issues with the cylinder deactivation, there is loads of power to pass when I step on it, and I do not detect any type of lag. Hope that helps.

I have a 2012 F-150 5.0 with 67,000 miles. Love the power, but I also had a rear main seal oil leak that was EXPENSIVE to repair. How common is this issue? Does it happen on the newer Coyote engines???

Love my 5.0L Coyote. And, I’m damn proud it’s built in Canada. Pound for pound, it’s the strongest V8 you can get in a truck, and even the quickest truck V8 with Ford’s aluminum body along with the exceptional 10R80 transmission. Then, if you tune them, they become an even bigger beast.

I worked at a rock quarry and one of our best pickups was a 2014 5.0 f150. that thing is breathing in rock dust, dealing with crappy washboarded haul rods, lots of idling, that thing had 287k miles and from the time I left in 2020 was still running strong.

Got a 2014 f150 5.0 that hauls a 5000 pound trailer 9 months of the year since it was bought new. It has by far been the toughest work truck I’ve run. Water pump went at 70k but they were known to go in the early models. Sitting at 150k with only oil changes and tires. Have also seen multiple f150s in my area with over 250k still running like a clock.

The mirrors do seem to have a weird shape, but the actual mirror part is all you need. It’s hard to explain, but at the bottom inside corner, you’ll have the lanes of the roads, right at the edge of the mirrors, there is actually nothing cut off from your view. I thought it was weird at first, but really I didn’t need to get used to them, everything to your sides and the road is there. The truck really is a blast to drive! I also have a Romeo powered 2 Valve New Edge ( which is a loooot of fun!) So trust me when I say this truck is fun! I get 15 mpg on mine, but I have the 18” Tremor wheels on 35s.

2016, bought new 5.0L, had 5.4L, both no issues, except replaced intake on 2016, cold idle solenoid failed in one bank. $1400 under warranty. Other issues, motors do require injector cleaning and plugs wvery 100k , thanks from ontario 🇨🇦

I have a 16. Great engine no issues. Truck has 86k miles still strong. Put straight thru catbacks on it with resonators to quiet it. Thats all! At 20mph, if i punch it she shifts down to 1st and breaks them loose...and they are 295 Nitto ridge grapplers. On highway to Colorado from Texas I got only 15mpg. 75mph. Bigger tires and leveled must have killed the mpg, with stock 20's and Michelins got 20. Looking at a 2020 with 25k miles to replace this one. Only Coyote and the 2020 hs the ten speed tranny. I have a 2020 Escalade with the 6.2. Love how that runs. Maybe Ill trade the truck in for the newer one and put a supercharger on it. yee haw!

I have an '18 XLT 2WD Supercab with this engine. I get a combined 21.7 or so mpg in the winter and 20.5 or so in the summer (with A/C), but I don't tow anything and I drive like a grandmother. Great sounding also! I still think about how growing up my dad was overjoyed when our family's '66 Rambler station wagon with the 232 six got 20 mpg! lol...

I had a 2021 F150 with a 5L coyote. It was a great truck I changed it for a super duty to pull my 33’ travel trailer. I wasn’t a fan of Ford sneaking in the cylinder deactivation in the 2021 I didn’t find out until after I purchased it. Because of this I don’t see the 21+ coyote being a long term engine.

The "sprayed in plasma" liners is like a mix between powder coating and plasma welding. Very durable in race cars.

@@frandanco6289 they say the material is 3 times stronger then steel liners so with low pressure rings and synthetic oil they should last much more than 3X longer! It also reduced the weight of the complete engine by 50 lbs.

@@dougkaspar9756 anyone who makes videos about that now are not reputable. That was a simple fix issue. They installed the wrong dipstick that caused people to overfill the oil l pan with up to 11 litres of oil. This causes them to burn oil. Others burned oil because they were using crap oil in a 12:1 compression engine. We also installed the Mustang PCV for those who ruined the first one. My truck burned oil for the first 3000 kms. After the fix I do 16,000 ok m between oil changes with no loss of oil.

My experience is from a 2016 f150 that i bought new. The only mods i did was change the muffler for better sound/flow and installed an Afe intake. The coyote was solid and i did not have any issues whatsoever. However, the coyote is not so much a good truck engine. It revs high and can be fun to drive, but it does not pull well. It was weak on torque and would always gear hunt when pulling my 5k lbs utility trailer…..and thats in the flat lands of south louisiana. I hate that ford applied cylinder deactivation. Are any of these 2018 and up trucks still having issues with the 10 speed transmission, have a 2018 ecoboost transmission fail with 80k miles luckily it was covered thinking of trading it in for a 5.0 but don’t want the 10 speed trannys anymore, would a pre 2018 be best , perhaps a 2017? 21f150 v8 here. Lifetime 20mpg would be better but I tow. Best ever 24.8 over 940 miles driven in a day at interstate speeds. Bed and truck full of household stuff.

Trying to decide on this exact truck, or a Silverado with the 5.3L or a lightly used Tundra with the V8. I’m in TX, and it will be used for normal daily driving, some longer distances (around TX once per month) and towing small scissor lifts, as well as equipment up to estimated 7-8k lbs. any recommendations? I'd stay away from the 5.3 Chevy. The Tundra is a great towing truck, they are geared really low and the 5.7 is a beast, that being said, the mpg is awful. The 5.0 F-150 is a good in between.

I have had Chevy Trucks and just decided to go back to Ford F-150s. Much more reliable and it feels like a truck. If you can get a four wheel drive. The 4.6 is a good very engine and the 5.0 has almost 400 horses.

Have a 2018 Platinum. engine didn't make 8K before being replaced, 3.5 litres oil between new and 8K. Plasma coating? Dealer did a bunch more same thing or excite piston slap. Motor way noisier than 2017 with cast liners. Been fine since replacement maybe a 1/2 litre pre 8k.

you need to rev the 5.0 to get the truck to move.... around town, it's annoying. On my test drive for my truck trying both the 5.0 and the 3.5 ecoboost, the 3.5 ecoboost has the torque off idle and was the clear choice for me.

Purchased a 2022 F 150 with 5.0 runs great, I’m concerned that ford’s 10 speed trans has no dip stick. I always like keeping an eye on my trans level . Have a great day .

It does have a dipstick it’s just under the truck I believe on the passenger side of transmission

a transmission can't burn oil like a motor can so unless you can see it leaking out somewhere, don't waste your time worrying about it. just service it regularly.

With direct injection engines you need to use specific API rated oil because of low speed extreme knock events. I researched this when DI engines were suffering catastrophic failures with no major signs of why. Fuel and oil mixing and then becoming explosive from the dry compression.

Going with a shorter oil change interval helps a lot with that(max 5K miles). Personally I wouldn't run 87 octane gas in anything with 12:1 compression to begin with. E85 or 93 for me.

@@frederickdouglass7517 shorter oil change intervals does nothing for the low speed knock events. It’s the chemicals in the oil that cause these events, not the products dissolved by the oil. Mainly it’s calcium that is found in the oils.

@@RadDadisRad Shorter oil change intervals = less fuel dilution. Besides most better oils already account for LSPI to begin with. Wouldn't much higher octane help with pre-ignition of which a major contributor is burning low octane gas?

@@frederickdouglass7517 the LSPI is only associated with DI engines. Plenty of great oils that aren’t designed for DI engines per the API testing. But that doesn’t stop people because their brothers uncle uses it in his 79 Camaro. Higher octane doesn’t help with LSPI because the fuel is injected lost compression and LSPI happens during compression. That’s the problem nobody is talking about. If an engine is only in taking and compressing air it’s volumetric efficiency is much higher because the fuel system will inject at the end of the compression cycle which helps cool the cylinder with less fuel.

Here in Cali you can find 2wd trucks everywhere, but we obviously don't have the snowy climate you guys have. People back in the day would chain up their 2wd truck and drive around like they don't need 4x4 lol.

I have a 2019 F150 5.0L with 60,000 miles. It’s never used a drop of oil. It handles towing an 8,000# trailer with ease.

I have a 2018 F150 with the 5.0. Do the new 5.0 liter engines have the same engine rattle during cold start and/or low RPM acceleration? My dealer said the noisy engine is normal for the 5.0 engines. Not sure if that is correct. .

Most likely a noisy intake manifold. I replaced one on a 2018 6.2 litre. My 2018 F150 5.0 sounds like the same issue. No effect on performance, just a bit noisy at idle.

My buddies 18’ 5.0 does the same thing as yours. Keeps running though. I have a 23’ with the 5.0 and it’s doesn’t make rattling noises at cold or warm starts. Hope that answers your questions✌🏼

Bought a 5L in 2016 for simplicity and longevity. Did not like the lack of low end grunt. In fact it was gutless under 4K RPM although it sounded great! 2017 2.7L Ecoboost really impressed me. Great commuter engine, less so for towing and work. 2020 3.5L Ecoboost I fell in love with that low end grunt and big block like torque. I do not have another V8 in my future unless it has twin turbos or a Whipple on it.

Does it still need premium fuel. Without premium fuel in my 2020 v8 I get slight knocking. I went to three dealerships before one of them told me to try premium. Corporate refused to say it.

This motor really loves when you give it some more oxygen and help it expell it quicker when done. Cylinder deactivation is removable with a tune. With GM its mechanical. So you have to go in to get rid of it, plus it is causing all kinds of reliability issues.

Wrong engine was originally validated with 7 quarts of oil. In 18 they upped the capacity. The longer dipstick just allowed to be still within range from the 17 models. Some would burn a quart and stop.

In the United States at least down south there’s a ton of 2WD trucks and not as many 4WD trucks at dealers. Obviously depends what state you’re in and what part of said state

I have a 19 5.0, I get 17.5 ish mpg with 4x4. I will say my engine hates 87 and burns a little oil, other than that I like it OK.

they say you can run 87 but after 2018 they bumped the compression ratio to 12:1 which is pretty high for 87 octane. make sense why it probably like premium fuel better.

I'm a little bewildered as to why many people are opting for what is essentially an SUV with an open cargo area. I suppose many are families and need to haul a few kids. It's an issue for those of us who want a truck to be a truck..... to haul things. I don't use it to haul people. You can still get 2WD, but it seems that extra cabs are going away.

Cam phasers and the valve train likes to shit the bed because of lubrication issues that ends up smacking a piston then the piston smacks a hole in your block..

The best 5.0 is gen 2 witch is 15 to 17 and the worst 5.0 is 18 to 23 models I've being working on vehicles for 18 yrs so yep

@@169abr You missed all that I prefer on a truck with the 6.8 I listed. Id prefer to put a blower on a 6.8 for all the reasons I listed. Don't get me wrong, I like the 5.0 and owned a 6th gen GT. The latest 5.0 has had issues with cylinder bores and oil consumption also which steers me away also.
