To be honest, I plan to getting the new ranger PHEV. While not everyone enjoys me set of circumstances, for me, it's perfect. Front and rear diff locks. Check. Enough towing for what I do. Check. Looks good as well. I also have plenty of solar panels on my house with 50kw of battery storage and live only 15km from work. I can use battery only for my daily commute and an ICE when I actually need to drive somewhere. It's great.
@nicholasmatthews59896 сағат бұрын
The devil is in the detail. As you have mentioned, although the Shark 6 has longer electric range it misses out on the usual 4x4 features like a locking differential or four-wheel-high and four-wheel-low modes (my understanding is that the Range PHEV petrol motor can drive all four wheels, whilst the Shark 6 petrol motor only can drive the front wheels not the rear wheels). The petrol engine in the Shark is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol (135kW and 260Nm), whilst the Ranger PHEV is powered by a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (wonder if it will be around about 222kW and 452Nm). For me if I was looking at buying a ute PHEV, I be okay with the Ranger, with the stated 11.8kWh battery which would be okay for when camping or needing the air-con going at times when parked without the need to have the engine running (set-up a camp bed in the rear seats if the weather is too hot). Cheers.

GM exited the entire RHD market after the last commodore was a rebadged Opel insignia. Opel got sold to what is now Stellantis. Ford didn’t stop making sedans and wagons because taxi drivers no longer wanted them. They stopped because there was more profit in something else. They painted themselves in to a corner. NVES (New Vehicle Efficiency Standard) = Albo + Bowen = CARBON TAX. Whilst we in Australia are advised to switch off a 12 watt light bulb to avoid a blackout, China is rapidly building two coal fired power stations each week (about one hundred per year) to enable them to build a BYD Shark 6 and full EVs to supply to Australia at a good price to help Albo + Bowen meet their carbon reduction ambitions (is this collusion with China?).

I see a major advantage of the Ford over the BYD. In 4WD and up steep hills where huge torque is available at the rear wheels where most of the traction is required to ascend that evil hill the Ranger will have low range combined with the electric and ice motor in the drive train. The BYD will only ever have about 50% of its available electric motor torque available at the rear wheels as the front elec motor 'and' the ice engine torque is only available at the front axle (zilch mechanical connection front to rear). A BYD will have to blast at vehicle breaking speed up that steep hill to make it. This really IS important to many drivers of 4WD utes out there just to do simple things like access into a campsite in an offroad situation for example. Many will be suspicious of the offroad 'overall' capability of the BYD with maybe only/ever having 70-80kW available at the back wheels with no lower gearing. We need to see the BYD load up with decent camping gear and actually ascend/descend Billy Goats Bluff track in the Victorian Alps....we wait and see.

Not only that, but the durability is also not top rank. China adds a lot of fancy electronic to cars (multiple screens, etc.), so that you forget about durability. It's also logical that you have to pay for quality, nothing is free. Make slightly lower quality metal parts for the chassis... and per thousand cars you save on metal for example to make 2 cars that is 👍 Will the public notice? Absolutely not. The car will last ex. 4 years, for some more and for some less, depending on driving style. What will be covered by the warranty and what will not be covered is again a good question. The fact that in one video the mechanic was twisting the arm supports in China with pliers means not top quality at all 🤣 When you see a video when the front wheels lift for 30 cm, and when it hits the ground, the front arm breaks off while driving only 1 mph... that's not very good. Will this happen to everyone? Definitely not!! Is it possible that this will happen to someone? Yes, it is much more likely to happen here than with a car from any other well-known brand. Famous brands go through a lot of tests, a lot of safety tests, dynamic tests, etc. before the car goes on the production line and then even after. Who pays for this? You who else. 😂 That is why the price of the car is also higher. Is the car safer? Of course. Does the public care about that? Definitely not!! 👇 What they care about is the price, and that China has cheaper cars. For a Chinese brand, these tests do not happen. Maybe a few very important tests.... The salary in China is ridiculously low and some people don't get paid for months. Some of the parts that were later used in the car were made by 16 year old (maybe even younger) kids for a salary that is not worth mentioning. Parts such as switches, etc. As always, each company makes certain products for other companies. In the end, of course the price of the car will be cheaper compared to the US/EU. It is not rocket science. 🙂

In my opinion PHEV's are the perfect transition to electrification, and most people are not interested in full electrification yet, the battery technology isn't there yet, the infrastructure isn't there yet, there's also of course range anxiety to consider not to mention battery degradation and the issues associated with that, and most EV buyers don't even consider the consequences after a few years of ownership. As for Ford, or the Ranger Company as I call it, they can join the ranks of the arrogant Toyota brand because these two marques are somewhat responsible for enormously hiking commercial new car prices on their agricultural trucks and ripping off the consumer like no one else before. Ford needs to stop smoking the whacky-tabacky with this all new substandard PHEV truck, shame on them for fooling Aussies that we all need "expensive and impractical" trucks in our lives...it seems we're heading down the path of the US now. I'd like a ute too but it's not practical for me, and if a humble and reputable brand that doesn't have a history of overcharging consumers were to release a PHEV ute I might just consider it...are you listening to me Mitsubishi?? I'm not a fan of Chinese slave labour built vehicles myself but these manufacturers have learned "a lot" from legacy brands and they have a huge advantage on price alone, although we don't know what the reliability or longevity these vehicles will have, most people are price driven anyway, and for the Ranger Company being so conceited to think that they can bring this underdone vehicle into the Aussie market with the anticipation that we'll lap them up and pay an enormous premium..."tellem they're joking" Ranger Company can expect the same fate that the cultist known as Elon Trump ( or whatever ) is experiencing with his overrated and defective EV's that are sitting unsold on their thousands. Hey John, you’re not really comparing apples with apples. The BYD is like a diesel electric locomotive. The combustion engine just runs a generator so you’re always driving on electric power. The problem is the generator is nowhere near 170 kW capacity of the electric motors, so if the battery goes flat, the vehicle is effectively in limp mode And will not have anywhere near the 170 kW rated power. The ranger on on the other hand is a proper hybrid. The combustion engine drives a traditional drivetrain and is augmented by the electric motor. I would take the Ranger any day over the BYD, hope this helps clarify how these things work.

No one wants to plug in and fuel up. That’s why HEVs are outselling BEVs 2 to 1. And Toyota and Ford diesels leave anything even slightly electric, in the dust. People don’t want em. So there will be some governments changing their eV policies, if they don’t want to send every Auto manufacturer broke.

Most people will take your view on it John, and I encourage it! However I'm not sure people realise that the motor in the Ranger PHEV is the 2.3l TurboCharged Petrol, same engine in the Top of the line VW Amarok that is sold as a premium option over the Diesel. So if you want to get away from Diesel and future AdBlue, DPF issues etc... then its a nice option to get the petrol. I see it as a Bonus, that you can plug it in a do 45klm a charge, that will do me to and from work. Then I have the petrol motor which has more power than the V6 Diesel and not even comparable to the BYD motor. BYD has a bigger battery, better range and more powerful electric motors, but a crappy small Combustion engine. Ranger has a better combustion Engine and smaller battery which i just see as a bonus. When both vehicles batteries are depleted (although we know they charge from the motor anyway and still provide some assistance), and its running mostly on combustion motor, i'd rather have the better petrol motor (222kw power), vs V6 Diesel (184kw power) and BYD engine (134kw power). I hope Ford does listen to everyone and drops the price as you said by $30k to compete with BYD, keep putting out your videos John telling Ford they don't know what they are doing, much appreciated! :-)

- km does it without the 'l'.. Nice point, so this PHEV is the "flagship model ( sub raptor ) - AWD with an additional ~75kW (not 75klW ) Petrol vs Diesel - advantage is Snappy performance and a much higher redline (more power with less torque).

heavier than traditional cars, more environmentally detriment, battery’s are more expensive to recycle than engines, more dangerous to try and recycle than engines, uses the same fuel only with extra steps, the ship that transports the material for the battery uses crude oil or natural gas to get across the world it goes to china then japan then goes back across the world to whoever bought it, uses brakes faster, wears wheel bearings and rotors…etc etc, costing more to the environment. a well built maintained engine will outlast any ev battery. and every instance that they compare two vehicles it’s always in their favor because they pick the best ev and they pick the worst gasoline car not an economy car that is better for the environment. it’s all a scam and so is the governments assistance to these gullible people.

@Mikky-The-Hat10 сағат бұрын
A standard hybrid is just a combustion engine with some help from a small electric motor and battery to harness the energy lost braking and provide some assistance when accelerating again. You’re paying a lot of extra money for a bit better fuel economy. Sometimes quite a bit better but not when you’re trying to push a 2.5t brick through the air. Conversely a plug in hybrid like the Shark has all the advantages of an electric car. It can be run purely on the electric motors for up to 100km in complete silence. The average trip is 33km so you can plug in every few days, possibly even charging for free from solar and never use any fuel. If you need to go further, the petrol engine works like a generator providing electricity to the electric motors and is still incredibly quiet and refined. Oh and it has 430 horsepower and tons of torque!
@philhealey444310 сағат бұрын
Well if it had a proper Diesel engine, but no, they give you a wailing thirsty Atkinson cycle tiny turbocharged petrol engine and the hybrid function is fairly useless if you drive with anticipation and rarely need to brake. Usually there is 0.0005mm of accelerator pedal hysteresis travel between acceleration and regenerative braking so coasting up to traffic lights is a rarely achieved skill.

Total ludite here. Saw reference to synthetic fuel which apparently 86% of cars on the road today are capable of running on. My question is why it's hardly mentioned even if only as a convenient stop gap until suchtime as battery technology can get up to speed. And would satisfy the green goons.
@mikelastname16 сағат бұрын
The problem we are trying to solve is not burning oil, per se, it is releasing CO2 into the atmosphere, and burning synthetic fuels in a "conventional" ICE may also do that. There is some wiggle room with biodiesel in that it releases only the amount of CO2 that it absorbed during growth so is nominally a net zero fuel.
@kadmow15 сағат бұрын
@@mikelastname - rething that CO2 equation - Synthetic Fuels with Atmospheric capture is the same as Bio Diesel using a factory instead of a Plant... NB.
