@@PlumberWRX Okay- customer brings in their car b/c the transmission was making noise. It needed a shift linkage bushing (part # EOAZ-7F330-A, a $2 part back then). Our transmission guy put the car up on the rack and sprayed cleaner on it and let it sit all day, charging them for a rebuilt transmission. When this particular bushing went bad the transmission made a horrible metal-on-metal screeching noise so it was plausible to the customer this was the problem. It’s because of people like this mechanic that I don’t trust anybody in this industry anymore. I know too much. And now you know . . . the rest of the story.

I had similar experiences with Volvo dealership "Service Departments". When you took the day off from work and they stamp "CUSTOMER WAITING" on the work order and your car is the third one in line when they open first thing in the morning, and send you to the waiting area, but then you see a valet driving your car to the rear parking lot behind the service area, and more than three hours later it's still parked. Then finally, your car is brought into a service bay, where a "technician" opens up the hood, fumbles with something in the engine compartment, then walks away for coffee and a cigarette. Same "technician" returns to your car, shuts the hood down, then drives your car to the Customer Car pick up area, you're presented with the bill by the "Service Advisor", and it shows 4.3 hours of labor, plus $178.95 for "parts" and $38.41 for "shop supplies".😮

The next morning, I went to check the dealership's work, and discovered that the splash pan for the engine/transaxle assembly was missing. I drove to the dealership and spoke with the same "Service Advisor" from the day before about the missing cover, and asked him to check around the service bay where the car had been "serviced". He went into the work area and returned after a few minutes and said he had just spoken to the"technician" who had worked on the car the day prior. He stated "the splash pan was missing when you brought the car in the first time, and he ain't goin' to lie." That dealership went out of business within a year after that, so I imagine my experience was not unique.

Well, there is another side of a coin. A friend of mine tried to program a key in old mercedes (2004 s320 w220) and had to change 2 gearbox control units, they both locked up by some kind of a antitheft program. And the first time he did not understood thats a key to blame as there was some kind of a counter - the car allowed 10 startups with improperly programmed key before frying the gearbox brains)

@@juicebox22a thats exactly what happened. As a key was like 300+ euro at the dealership (and with 2 weeks waiting for a key, actually), he found a workshop offering to cut another key into the car for around 50. And ended up spending around 2000 euro as i remember))) not including a new key) p.s. that was a keyles go car indeed (if that is what you've ment by a transponder key). though i think this problem i equally possible for cars without keyless as well. And i think that may also happen to all the cars with a "fish" key, including earlier ones from like 1998. Allthoug i've heard that older 5g-tronic control unit can be reprogrammed afterwards and is twice cheeper anyway, than brains for newer 7g-tronic cars (that started apperaing in 2004). p.p.s. and to be fair, it is now definitely possible to find workshops that can properly cut in a key for that era mercs. i have another friend with 2005 CLS 500 (and again, 7G tronic car with the same gearbox control unit), who did succesfully bought and programmed a new key without dealer like 2 year ago (first story is like 10 year ago), and the car is still ok. Back in the 2000's they would sell pre-cut keys for $50 (they had like 15 pre-cuts for all cars) and charge $200 to program it - which was: turn ignition on 5 times quickly, on the 6th time, you leave it on, and it programs the chip in the key. My salesman programmed my key for free.

I'm an automotive locksmith and to say that there were 15 precuts is simply false. If you are talking about old GM Vats keys there were 15 transponder values. Those keys were not pre-cut. There were thousands of different codes. I'm not going to go into the entire thing but the vehicle needed to be interrogated which could take anywhere from 4 minutes to hour depending which value that car took. You had have a key code and make a test key. Once you found the value you would copy the test key onto the permanent key. If you were talking about anything else there were never 15 precut keys of anything.

In the future, please put the word "Dealer" or "Dealership" directly in your video title. Ford Motor Company is not responsible for the actions of the dealers, and actually has surprisingly little leverage over them due to the strong franchise laws in each state. As a FoMoCo retiree, I can't even begin to tell you how angry and frustrated we were with the awful behavior of many of the franchised dealerships. Having said that, there were and are some very good dealers as well, but just one bad one taints all of them.

I'll call BS on this one. Your hidden camera did not catch Ford at anything that could be considered a rip off. Your wait time was 2 hours instead of leaving the vehicle for the day. Yes, it took an hour before they started work, but big surprise here, they do not drop everything when you walk in the door. As to the cost of the FOB, there is a difference between genuine OEM parts and aftermarket. Perhaps there is something in this which allows you to beat the OEM part, but all too often, you get what you pay for. I think they dropped the ball when they did not cut the mechanical key, but that is easily resolved and likely at no extra cost. I would agree in general that dealer rates are too high, but everyone is entitled to their business model. Is it expensive?, yes. Is it a ripoff?, no.

Due to lack of interest, that service was eliminated and replaced with an automatic self-serve key cutter that doesn't cut ANY fobs or do ANY programming. Even now that the fob keys are not available anymore people don't even ask if there's any way to do that. We also had an ability to cut a regular car key without a fob for an alternate less expensive ignition and door option. The machine doesn't do that, either.
