This case always angers me. That guy knew for 10 years what happened but he prevented it from being investigated. And then the killer’s mother, who put that sign on their car. She knew what her son did and she covered for him. Too many people obstructing justice.

To be fair, Vicks friend did call police and give an anonymous tip shortly after the murder occurred but the police were denied a warrant to get Vick's DNA. The police could have just put surveillance on Vick and got his DNA another way. The police screwed up.

What strikes me in these cases is in how many of these cases of women being raped and killed are perpetrated by men who in their turn have kids. How can you not think that could be your daughter to whom something bad could happen? I particularly remember watching a documentary about BTK in which his daughter gave an interview. Her father had killed and tortured a woman living close by their house and she felt terrified (of course at that time no one knew who BTK was) and she remembered telling her dad that she was scared and he told her something to the effect of "Don't you worry, nothing bad will ever happen to you". She also remembered her dad as a kind and loving father. How can you be loving to someone and a monster to somebody else?

I love people being mad at the witness. He was in HIGH SCHOOL when it happened and scared to death. He did report it anonymously which was probably terrifying enough. I agree his reason of finally deciding to tell again was not great. She only had value because it turned out she had a kid? But I feel like the cops could have gotten his DNA from garbage like in other cases if they were really that interested in him back at the start. I think they are playing up how much of a suspect he was retroactively to put all the blame on the witness.
@raerae6422
@raerae6422 2 жыл бұрын
Its BS that the witness/ friend didn't know she had kids. It would have been all over the papers, news and would have been the talk of the town. And if for some reason he never heard anyone speak about it, why he never was curious to ever look up the case over that 10 years? I know i would if my best mate was the killer. I think he wanted to get involved because the daughter is supremely good-looking. Yes, im saying it. If she was ugly or a guy, i doubt he would have lifted a finger. Also, we only have his word that he called the police after the murder. Yes, calls can get lost but my gut says he that contact up so he would't look like so heartless and negligent.
@LauraSti
@LauraSti 2 жыл бұрын
I think the show probably mischaracterized what happened. It's unlikely that he "learned she had a child." It's far more likely that, when it happened, he was a teenager, scared to death, it was his friend who did it... that's paralyzing, and then when nothing came of his anonymous report he tried to put it behind him entirely. Then, so many years later, he realized not that she had a child but what it MEANT that she had a child. His brain finally felt safe enough for it to click into place that this kid had grown up without a mother and without closure, and at that point he realized it wasn't "over and done with" the way he'd told himself it was for so many years. He realized there was a young lady out there with no mother and no answers, for whom it was still present and active, and that tipped the scales. At least, based on my understanding of trauma, shock in close relationships, and psychology, that's the most LIKELY reason. There could be other factors, and I'm way too far removed from the case to make a clear assessment.

Before the DNA match in 2005, the witness did not definitely know Jonathan Vick murdered Dana. For all he knew, Jonathan Vick might have never went through with going to Dana's barber shop that night, or Vick could have went over there and someone else could have killed Dana after Vick left Dana's Barber Shop.

Hmm I guess it depends on the state but other police officers would just look for some item that has their suspect's DNA if they can't get a court order. They would usually do it by picking up the suspect's trash because trash is no longer considered private property so it's fine to take.

I can definitely understand the frustrations of police towards people who don’t come forward immediately with important details of the crime but when you’re threatened that can affect people, and most aren’t afraid to make the revenge a reality. Take the episode “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered”. George, who was a witness to a crime, testified against his two friends, Doug and RD. A year later, a package was sent to George’s home, which was a bomb. It exploded, killing George’s dad and injuring his mother. Doug’s brother and sister constructed the bomb with instructions that were discretely told over the prison phone by Doug. Doug’s siblings got 22 years and Doug and RD got additional life sentences. It just shows that people afraid to carry out their revenge.

The investigators could’ve still gotten the perps DNA despite the court ruling that there wasn’t probable cause. Cops do it all the time. They just have to put the perp under surveillance and wait until he leaves his DNA on an item in public. They can even go through his trash or wait until he eats in a restaurant and then snatch up items with their DNA. I’m shocked the police didn’t do this. It’s an extremely common tactic to get around courts not issuing a warrant for their DNA.

"Red tape' is there to protect YOU. Without it, every crime would be solved in 5 minutes because the cops would take a power drill to a suspect like Jack Bauer on 24 and close the case.

I don't know why you cannot follow him and get a sample of his DNA, some of the cases we saw on Forensic Files were solved with that technique. Furthermore, why the court cannot order for his DNA when you had a credible tip, his mugshot looked similar to the face described by the witness, and saw his vehicle near his crime scene.
