Thanks John! I appreciate how you broke out when the OPGAR method will be more useful than the STAR method! As I am preparing for loop interviews with Amazon next week the timing of this content is perfect.

I had to do the STAR method when I interviewed for my job 7 years ago. I knocked their fucking socks off. STAR method is so easy to interview for.

I agree with emphasis on the goal. STAR sort of reminds me of the person who is most busy talking about how busy they are. I do this this this this this this this... But why? To me the Why gives more understanding of the impact than just the result. Taking a randomly selected kid for a ride in a helicopter, that's cute. Landing in extreme hurricane conditions to save a child from raising flood waters to save lives (means a little bit more). Nobody wants someone who does things at work just to do them, especially not a senior level, you're just making fake work for real employees. Do the things that achieve the goals of the organization. Great idea, though I'd like to see content where you pose responses in that format as well. I think that gives a feeling for the cadence. STAR is intimidating until I watched someone go through it, then I realized this is just an over-engineered story with a beginning middle and end.

Situation and Task in STAR is the where you outline your goal, you state what's happening and then state what is your task in that situation, boom, you just presented your goal. If you're not able to express the goal in those, it's not STAR's problem, it's yours because for some reason you can't seem to understand simple concepts. This whole videos is just pretentious. You say STAR is over engineered? And you are agreeing on a video who is pretentiously reinventing something that is so simple and that works? With more steps? You and this video are the ones over engineering a simple thing.

@@wafercrackerjack880 You show a lack of comprehension of the core concepts and the key point of my comment. I just got hired by Amazon so I think I understand how to use STAR method pretty well. And when using it properly the focus is simply on what was done, where at the senior level understanding the goals of the organization and applying the right work to achieve those goals is more important than how much of something you can do. They aren't looking, at that level for what you can do, how much etc. It's all about being able to lead teams to accomplish the big picture, overarching goals of the organization. If that's OVERengineered then I would question if you're on the level to have those conversations in any format. Also note, if I don't reply to your inevitable tirade of further brilliance, it's not a technical error, I didn't get busy. I saw the notification and ignored it. So we are clear.

@@PFCdurty I also got accepted by Amazon 3 weeks ago. You think you're the only one? And guess how I got in Amazon? Just by using STAR. You know why it didn't take me long to prepare for Amazon (just a couple of hours before the loop interview)? I have been using STAR ever since. I know and have been using STAR years ago, even before I had the chance to interview for Amazon. You guys try to be smart by making things complicated when they are not. Now you're in Amazon, why don't you try to argue with everyone there and change STAR to OPGAR. Let's see how smart you really are.

Thank you John, I'm so lucky to watch this video before my next pm interview. and I'm gonna use the OPGAR method. but may I ask you a question about the part goal and results. when I didn't meet the goal, how to answer? I feel like that it's hard for me to figure out a really successful example I did. I mean something I did contributed to the primary goal.

Hey There! If you didn’t meet the goal that’s ok - describe the circumstances that led to not being able to meet - maybe it’s that you left the team before you had to to bring it to fruition, maybe there was a reorg - I would also close with a description of what you might have done differently to make it successful or what metrics that you would have wanted to measure for success.
