The selector switch has a story to it that was taught to czech soldiers as a way to remember the positions (the same selector is on the Vz. 58). It’s rather interesting, perhaps telling, that the Czechs, having recognized the potential merits of the smaller 5.45 cartridge (and eventually 5.56) vs 7.62x39 decided to make an AK-clone for it, rather than simply making a 5.45 version of the vz.58. I realize there do exist 5.56 versions of the vz.58 but these are recently-made for the commercial market.

Just a side note, hearing the "Cz 58" at the start - The vz. 58 isn't actually technically called Cz. The name (for the original military rifle) is Samopal vzor 58 (Submachine gun mark/model 58), or short Sa vz. 58, sometimes just Sa 58 or vz. 58. (Sa being short for submachine gun, vz. for mark or model, 58 being year of adoption). There has been civilian variants made (either original military rifles converted, or new rifles made from old new stock parts, originally made for military) that do carry the CZ in name though. Also slight correction on the info ... the vz.58 was main firearm in the military for much longer than it seems. Ian sayin it was used in the 60ies and into 70ies ... and even after that. That makes it feel like it was about phased out at that time (but still used to some extent). This is not the case. There were no replacements adopted well until 2010 or 2011, when the CZ 805 BREN was. And the vz.58 remained as the main standard issue assault rifle until that time (and was / is still well being used because the numbers of CZ 805 are limited). There were some programs in like 80ies for replacement but those didnt go thru. Also the CZ 2000 Lada shown in the video was considered... but also not adopted.

I believe the Blue handguard is for working with UN peacekeeping forces. When I was in Sarajevo in the 90s, I saw similar handguards on Yugo, and Bulgarian Knockovs. I've never seen one of these, though. Didn't even know they existed. Those bars over the rear site are really distinctive, and I even like the look of them.

Is that a Puckle Gun teeshirt? I can't quite tell, but it looks like an illustration I vaguely remember.

Development of LADA took really long, also because russians refused to provide specs of 5,45x39 ammo. So developers basically bought some rounds from russian ocupants, and started reverse engineering of round.

Funny how many countries went the way of the Galil style. The Galil was super heavy, and was mostly issued after a decade in infantry use, to Israeli tank and artilary units until being retired by the early 2000’s.

One of my favorite AK variants. Would love to get my hands on one, or a parts kit at least, but seems about as likely as winning the lottery. For whatever reason I'm particularly partial to the shape of the rivet heads. Pretty unique.

So the Czechs basically made an AK-74?
@PavelNygryn6 жыл бұрын
But with ability to shoot precisely. Small country, small army, no place for Soviet "Hurrah" actions in style of "There's plenty of us" (нас много)
@alienwizard97656 жыл бұрын
@@PavelNygryn You forgot to mention: 1 rifle for 3 soldiers, NKVD shooting you in the back and 20 million people getting killed by Stalin himself. During the battles, Soviets didn't have advantage in numbers over Axis - army sizes weren't too different, and many times Soviet troops were poorly positioned and, because of that, outnumbered by Axis troops. Soviet army did suffer more casualties, but mostly during the beginning of the war, because preparations weren't complite, etc. Also, what do you mean by "shoot precisely"? There are a few changes regarding the ergonomics, but the overal mechanism is unchanged. Is it still jiggling like an AK while firing? If yes (which is probably the case), how exactly is it going to "shoot precisely"?
@PavelNygryn6 жыл бұрын
@@alienwizard9765 It's not jiggling nearly as much as AK-74. Probably different tolerances in part manufacturing. "There's plenty of us" refers to top-level commands. Lives of individual soldiers were not considered as values. It's kind of making sense - training and equipments expenses for most of "basic" soldiers were low (if any). Some were actually referred as "untrainable" a still send to combat . Czechoslovakian army never used this approach.
@alienwizard97656 жыл бұрын
@@PavelNygryn What time period are you referring to? If you are talking about WWII period - as I said, preparations and industrialisation weren't complite. There're many myths regarding the high command during WWII about generals simply sending troops to death, because they didn't care - such things might've happenned sometimes, but definitely not regularly. Moreover, even during that war Soviet army was the only one that was equiped with SMG's in great numbers. It also the second to have assault rifles, and first to equip the whole army with them. If you are referring to post-WWII period, then you have to keep in mind that Soviet Union had to be rebuild after the war. You also have to keep in mind that after Khrushev came to power, USSR have slowly been losing it's economy and production, army have been degrading too. Soviet Union was also preparing to defend against US, so huge amount of equipment had been made. And all things above resulted in huge stockpiles of outdated equipment that were very expensive to replace. About training - as I said, army have been degrading, so by the time Afgan war began, Soviets hadn't used US' expirience with Vietnam war, which resulted in conscripts being sent to fight (some of which weren't well-trained), and not being prepared for . In Vietnam US army had the same problem - preparing for massive conflict with USSR. But they were able to fix it afterwards. These problems have haunted Soviet Union and still haunt Russia as a result: preparing for massive breakthrough, but after realising that things aren't going to happen that way, not being able to change the doctrine. You also have to remember that socialist Czechoslovakia had very powerful economy, in many cases even better production then Soviet Union, and didn't have to maintain as big and as powerful army.
