The gun is called "Matilda" in the RE games because it's a reference to the movie "Leon: The Professional". It's also the reason the highest difficulty in RE4 is called "Professional" mode. However, in the original RE2 from 1998, the gun was actually called the VP-70. The PS1 games all used the real-world names for their guns (Browning HP, Beretta, Mossberg, Desert Eagle, etc). They probably changed it when the series got bigger to avoid dealing with the copyright.

California also has a law banning "advertisements" (i.e. presence of a real manufacturer's product) of firearms in video games. So while I doubt most manufacturers give a shit about their products in video games, the potential for lawsuits over liability for this law possibly affects game devs enough to at least change the names and keep everyone on the safe side and still have business in California.

Outstanding post Ian. As you may know, during the cold war the CIA helped to fund and organize secret stay-behind armies in NATO countries should the Russian tank armies invade West Germany. The role model was the British Top Secret WW2 Auxiliary Units (still classified up until 1995); and stay behind force with prepared camouflaged bunkers for a team of 5-8 operatives with sealed orders and on activation would operate without further orders. Their life expectancy was less than 10 days. They were instructed to let the main invading force roll-over and then harass the enemy rear areas and destroy specified infrastructure targets. This was the assignment of Bear Grylls, a member of 21 SAS. The CIA used a similar cold war covert training bases in W. Germany; like the British Coleshill House system of WW2 for the Auxiliary Unit in Britain. So the VP70 would have had a very viable role in stay behind & militia warfare because it is compact, concealable and with the 3-round burst. At the same time in the USA, the Ingram was being developed / the Italians made the Beretta 93 / the FN Hi-Power developed a machine pistol variant (NFI) etc. No wonder detail is hard to come by, try an FOI request to Langley.
@Zorro91295 жыл бұрын
I don't think a FOI request would work, the CIA releases only what it wants to. Fascinating info about guerrilla warfare though, do you have any other sources?
@SpiderGeometry Жыл бұрын
@@Zorro9129 3 years late but it's so fascinating that I still think it's worthwhile looking. Operation Gladio is probably the most well known stay-behind operation in the wake of WW2. Unfortunately there are serious allegations that tie it to the far right in Italy, moving away from its headline mission to resist the potential advance of communist *forces*, over to intimidation and violence against the domestic organised left generally. These are all vehemently denied by NATO but it's just one part of a rich history of deep state conspiracies in Italy including Propaganda Due.

I know these have a crap trigger, but it's one of my grail pistols, like top 3, since I was about 9 or 10 years old and had a toy VP-70 with working slide and removable magazine. It shot little dart "cartridges" which were crap, but I just loved it because it was a lifesize, almost 1:1 replica. This was the age before toy guns had to be translucent/neon colors too, so it was a nice flat black. Totally off topic to the video but as kids in the 80s and early 90s we really had it made with the gun toys. My local Toys R Us literally had an entire gun aisle, and the vast majority were basically replicas of famous real guns; meanwhile nowadays most stores won't carry toy guns at all. All part of the social engineering of kids...

Fun fact. Leon uses a VP70 in re2 because the hitman character in Leon the Professional uses one. That's why they named it the Matilda in every game after re4. That was natille Portman's name in that movie.

I have always liked the VP70 since it first appeared in those (in)famous '80s action shows and films. During my police career (here in the states, the Deep South specifically) one of my best friends (now sadly passed on) often showed up with all sorts of different duty and "just because" guns (we bought our own in those days). I have fond memories of him showing up with a VP70Z (oh how we wanted an "M" ...) and all too brief time spent with it (he was a habitual trader and soon traded it off for something else, eventually winding up with a P7 M8, another great and delightfully quirky pistol). Until this episode, however, I did not know the pistol's history or it's being a legacy of the late war era "peoples' pistol" concept. Fascinating that they thought of it being a weapon for resistance fighters if they were over-ran. Ah, the Cold War Era of my youth. ;) I never shot or even held the "M" model, of course, but given that blistering rate of fire, and machine pistols' notorious tendency to climb so that only one or two rounds stay on the intended target, it seems H&K was pretty smart to make it only work with a stock. This makes even more sense now that I understand it was for possible use by less trained resistance fighters.

@PerceptionVsReality3336 жыл бұрын
The Killer7 is that Hardballer longslide 1911 from the Terminater movie.
@taylorwest69866 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's just a regular 1911 and not a long slide (judging from the slide length compared to the handle), but it does have the huge laser sight in homage to Terminator. "The name "Killer7" is a reference to the then-upcoming cult-classic of the same name, which Shinji Mikami produced. The character Kaede Smith has an AMT Hardballer that looks similar to the Killer7 magnum." The Broken Butterfly appears to be a mix of a Smith & Wesson Schofield, Colt Single Action Army, and a Montenegrin "Gasser Pattern" revolver. If anyone can find an example of that, it would be Ian.
