The APS is a machine pistol developed by Igor Stechkin in the late 1940s and adopted by the Soviet Union in 1951, basically at the same time as the Makarov pistol. The Stechkin and Makarov share many characteristics - both are double action, both fire the 9x18mm cartridge, both have decocking mechanisms, both have heel magazine releases, and both are simple blowback actions with fixed barrels. The Stechkin, however, is capable of both semiautomatic and fully automatic fire, and is paired with a detachable combination shoulder stock and holster. The Stechkin is also a substantially larger gun, with a 20-round double stack/double feed magazine and a rate reducing mechanism in the grip.
In practice the Stechkin was not particularly successful, as is a difficult weapon to shoot accurately. It was intended as a personal defense weapon for personnel like drivers, vehicle crews, and the like - men who needed a weapon of some sort, but did not have the need for an infantry rifle. In the US military at the time, this role was performed by the M1/M2 carbine. In the 1970s the Stechkins were pulled out of service and replaced by short-barreled AK rifles - but they did see a limited resurgence of use by the Spetznaz in Afghanistan, where they were used with suppressors for special operations.

My father was a pilot during WW2, he used TT for "real shooting", defending himself. Also he had an opportunity to compare a lot of german and soviet weapon up to 1967, when retired. He didn't like "short barrels", preferring rifle, SVT with optic, but Stechkin was his favourite, "heavy, accurate, very comfortable for his hand".

That backelite-like material the second pattern of the holster is made of, is called AG4. It is a thermo-activated fabric-filled resin. And some types of it are very rigid. You can hardly break it with a hammer. Other types are brittle.

welp, what i was told (how i learned it) the 200m are not to make "deadshots" it is for the common soldier to just fire suppressive shots in the general direction and have them close enough to seem threatening. if you shoot at someone and your bullets go 20m short... not that impressive, but have them wizz by in some "close" proximity should be enough to keep their heads down. would anyone really engage at that range..... no but they would have a bit higher chances of efficte sup. fire with that range on the sights

Lol it will be like shooting rainbows at 200M 9Mak isn't exactly know for it's power. I mean they went from 7.62x25 to 9x18 because they wanted concealable and simpler/cheaper to manufacture guns. If they needed more power they'ed just got straight to the AK.

The cleaning rod in the stock also has a flattened end, so it can be used as a screwdriver to remove the grips. Also the stock fitting is very robust and well made. It does not have a separate spring, but the lever piece is fitted into a hole and acts as a spring to attach the pistol.

My Captain carried one of these at all times. Stock/holster was custom made from some reddish wood after original cracked. This is the gun that really got me into guns and mechanics behind them.

Maybe in a shoulder holster. Yes the gun is heavy, a little bit heavier than a loaded 1911 and slightly longer than Walther P38, abouth the same size as Beretta 92. Beautiful gun. In Russia they are getting rarer and turned almost to the status symbol. Anyway I like it for its 20 round magazine and smooth lines.

Hi Ian. You made a comment about the plastic stock being of some phenolic material. Bakelite is itself a phenol-formaldehyde product. No doubt different look and feel from whatever phenolic material you were thinking of,but likely not terribly different in basic chemistry. I made Bakelite for a science project in high school. Most phenolics use formaldehyde or similar chemistry to create the basic conditions for crosslinking. I could be wrong,but I believe they are all thermosetting as well. A minor issue but you might be interested in it. Cheers.

I wanted to make the exact same comment. I'm studying to be a polymer chemist and it bugged me too. I'm glad you made the comment and you are absolutely right. In the 40's through 50's bakelite and its descendants were the go to polymers when it came to injection moulding.

I belive my grammar is off. I wanted to correct my previous comment as i was talking about the major use of bakelite and phenolic resins as a thermosetting polymer in that time period. Nylon and other polymers also saw industrial use a lot but they are not thermosetting polymers specifically. I am not able to remake any weapon part, and i am sorry if i got anyone's hopes up because of my bad phrasing.

Unrealistic distances aside, I like the design of rear sight on this piece. Intuitively clear how to operate, big bold numbers, big switch wheel and seems to be pretty sturdy too so it'd take a good beating before being knocked out of proper zeroing.

Regarding the wooded stock. My grandfather was a Soviet tank gunner in the early 50's. He was issued a Stechkin with a wooden holster/stock, and really didn't like to carry it. It was really easy to hit the edge of the hatch jumping into a tank with the holster (as it bulged out rather awkwardly), cracking and effectively ruining it.

I love these things, but honestly just issuing out PPS-43s as PDW's probably would have made more sense. They're nice and light, and can be easily carried slung with a folded stock. Easy to store inside vehicles as well. And there was no shortage of them after the war

I suspect that was the contingency in the event of an actual war. Soviets didn't have a major conflict till Afghanistan and by then the AK 74U was available.

The thing about soviet war-production anything was that quality control was barely there, 1942-45 PPSs aged badly and quickly I imagine. It's also not a small weapon by tank crew standards.

The Stechkin is my second favorite Soviet pistol. I never got to play with one in the service, but I sure would love to. TT-33 is my favorite Soviet pistol. Don't get me wrong, I like Maks, but I really like the 7.65, x 25 Toke cartridge, more umf than 9mmP, and the projectile weight (if firing the correct ammo) is only five grains lighter than standard 9mmP.

I own an airsoft co2 version of this pistol, even bought the the real wooden stock/holster with ammo pouches and leather strap to go with it! The stock is a dark reddish brown!

Whatever it is, it's not russian and really shouldn't be used. AKSU works just fine. There never was a "U" Version of the 47/59 Versions, so the 74 part is redundant.

Hi Ian just wondering would you be able to have a look at any irish made weapons. @keith moore Well, Beretta 93r isn't full-auto pistol, it's only semi-auto/burst. Secondly, it is more likely based on Beretta M951R instead of Stechkin.

Yes, although formally APS and other soviet pistols have been replaced in service, there's such a volume of soviet stocks, they will be in use for at least a couple decades by various forces around the globe.

Nice. Heard of these in a few novels back in my teens, but have only ever seen 1 or 2 photos. I wonder if there is much velocity gain with that length of barrel. I'd like to see someone try to use those sights out that far. It's not just that the bullet starts slow, it slows down so much more while in flight at an unpredictable rate, with a really big heavy bullet you can consistently lob rounds and with a long sight radius you don't need to as finely adjust nor laser perfect alignment of the sights.
