This film was a fail. As a psychotherapist, I was really disappointed by the suggestion of Borderline Personality Disorder, especially because it was never completely developed. Tyler Perry has a habit of giving you crumbs, when he could provide something more substantial if he only took the time and better honed his craft. He never fully fleshes out anything, which is unfortunate because he has too many years and projects under his belt to be giving his audience mediocrity.
@goddessnoir2904 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I wanted to know why. Instead we the viewers are just being told that's she "crazy". No development or anything. Just told in little bits that's she's been "off“

What disorder was it that she had? Or what would you call it?
@thezeeyez71514 жыл бұрын
He's such the control freak that he has too many projects, too many irons in the fire. He definitely can't delegate duties, he has to write, cast, screen, shoot, choose wardrobe and produce. He's just getting by instead of focusing on the depth of character development.
@blackdivine67624 жыл бұрын
@ I'm getting my entire life in this comment section. So much intellectually dialogue.
@thezeeyez71514 жыл бұрын
@ I totally agree. It's as if he highlights the tragedy of our experience with no path to healing the pain. As you said, he cannot confront the reality of the scenarios he plays out which imo really lessens his credibility as a genius writer. A genius writer can connect cause and affect, flesh out the emotions of the characters and go deep dark and ugly to touch the audience and challenge your thinking. TP is good at making others laugh at his characteizations (usually the women) but his perspective as a female is grossly limited. I remember watching Black Girls who consider suicide and cringing at Whoopis role, and Janet Jackson's role when she found out she'd contracted AIDS. Don't even get me started on the mother who lost her kids as the father threw them out of the window. He fails miserably to show our resilience and the depth of our emotional and spiritual humanity bc he refused to collaborate. He's definitely got a god complex! I am enjoying Ryan Coogler, Will Packer Lena Waithe's The Chi, and Ava Duvetnays Queen Sugar. There's so many Mara Brock and Salim Akil, and Yvette Bowser's out here .... I don't understand why there aren't a plethora of fantastic sitcoms, drama's and movies out here. I guess we can't work together and I second your point....they see us make advanced in something and White folks already waiting to rush in and build wealth beyond what we're doing. They've done that since arriving here and observing and then stealing this land. I'll be so happy when we learn to unite, stay on code and really rise in our power. We can't do that until we learn we can't do it alone. TP is the perfect example of that. Spread the wealth and opportunity bruh! Peace and blessings ❣️

The character Robert is probably supposed to be a stand in for Tyler Perry himself. It's reasonable to assume that many people told Perry that he wouldn't make it and that many woman passed on him, because they weren't about to be sitting around supporting some fool chasing a dream. As a result Perry probably still feels a bit salty about it despite his subsequent success. That's the most likely reason Perry would try to depict Robert as a sympathetic figure instead of the leech that he was.

it's fascinating how despite his lengthy filmography, tyler perry has not grown as a filmmaker or improved at all and i don't think he's interested in it, either. i understand people give him a pass because he hires predominately black casts and tells stories centered on black people (women, the most iconic of which is played by himself, which is.. anyways) but good lord. his films are just bad. but their biggest crime is being lazy and uninspired.
@reginayfavors5 жыл бұрын
He's just interested in pushing out products so he can be a black filmmaker, but I never hear of him saying that he has received mentoring from a fellow filmmaker or him watching director's commentaries of other films. I don't hear of him taking a class, even if online, to hone his skills. Nor do I hear of him reading other scripts for personal growth reasons. He has ideas and really feels like he doesn't need help. But we all need growth, even when we are very good at something, at least that's what we think of ourselves.

To my understanding he's written the plays when he used to tour as Madea and the others he's staged? If so, perhaps in the same vein he's simply interested in cranking out scripts but not necessarily investing in the film aspect of his storylines. Hiring the best would mean paying accordingly for such talent and maybe in not doing so he can keep more people employed in his studios. If this theory holds true in any way the maybe this is deliberate. A big budget film would drain funds he might like placed elsewhere like pockets.

Tyler Perry is the broke black man in his movies, especially in this one.
@tariqthomas90905 жыл бұрын
While I give Tyler Perry credit for employing black actors/creators and exposing them to more mainstream audiences (and making guilty pleasure movie "Why Did I Get Married?"), he's vastly outshined by much more talented and interesting black directors these days. In a world where we have Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Jordan freaking Peele, Spike Lee, Gina Prince-Brythewood, Barry Jenkins and others, we've pretty much outgrown Tyler Perry's work. At least, I know I have.
@reginayfavors5 жыл бұрын
I'm like you: I wouldn't want to know of a John Singleton and Spike Lee and the others you mentioned and not try to work as hard or receive instruction to make my movies better. I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER want my movie to be out at the same time as a Lee, Jordan, Singleton, and Coogler, if I was Tyler Perry. He needs some time usher in growth, become a true student of filmmaking.

There was a change in my opinion when Tyler Perry depicted black stories and then when he started expoilting the black community particularly the female audience. I stopped watching his plays and movies years ago when I realized he wasn’t making his movies better. They were getting worse, and he was just turning a quick buck. Acrimony and the Madea sequels show that. It’s always like he talks at the black women he never attempts to talk from our perspective. His perspective of his female counterparts are stereotypes.

The movie isn't bad & imo it's well written. You should watch it for the drama & not necessarily because someone said he's trying to "make black women look bad" I have a darkskinned bf & she loved the bachanal that came from it, not everything should be about being a racist. Watch it for yourself & tell me what you think

@@MissTeaq "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" is the movie you're thinking about. And yes, that movie was far from his best, but I feel as though Acrimony was very well done considering how he usually writes his dramas awkwardly.

Oof! Thank you for taking this movie down. As someone who wasted a portion of THEIR twenties on a broke guy with Big Dreams (TM), I had to own my shit and acknowledge why I did it, and was not to be there when/if his ship came in. I saw a guy who needed help and it was supposed to be temporary. He wasn't entitled to any of that time and energy, but he had his hooks in me. And for sure now I'm that crazy bitch who finally abandoned him, because I had the audacity to want my own life and have my own dreams. Not bitter!

Toborn the Great Thanks for writing this. It has been my own personal experience. I spent a good portion of my life at the expense of an ex. Was financially responsible for everything and supporting his dreams over my own mental, physical health and education. He graduated with honours. Work that I edited for him from my hospital bed after surgery. I can’t explain why it made sense to me then as I consider myself a reasonably smart person. I thought helping him was helping us. Because I’d been conditioned that relationships are like that. As you said I had to own my own shit and have accepted it is what it was. Gotta keep moving on.

Fr I loved the movie because there wasn’t a true villain. Everyone wanted a happy ending fir the woman and a bad one file the guy but life doesn’t work like that. Life is unfair and you should always thrive to make better choices. Her giving up on him is not the point at all like many try to say...she wasted time and energy and she looks for someone to blame BUT SHE IS TO BLAME FOR HER CHOICES. He finally gets what he wanted after destroying someone else’s life and his past ends up catching on to him. There are so many lessons and so many interpretations. The movie isn’t black or white is grey and I love it

All Tyler Perry’s movies are energy harvest through and through. He is putting out a certain image of black women that we don’t need to continue seeing. He has money but no talent. He’d do better if he let other people involved but he’s too self absorbed. Just look at his Medea movies he practically plays everyone except the children 🙄
