One aspect that contributes to the 'Age of Corruption' (and there are many) is the idea of Manufacturing Consent (a book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky). The plutocratic nature of this country and the idea that elites should be protected or given compassion allows for a media (typically part of the elite class) that downplays white collar crimes and pushes misleading ideas of what corruption is. Luckily, with the information age, people can consume media that is not filtered through corporate or elite friendly narratives that focus on the powerless. Thanks for doing what you do.

I want to add that American culture focuses so much on positivity, go getting, optimism, can-do attitude, to the extent that being realistic and the voice of reason can make you appear like negative, buzz-killing and even get you labeled “toxic”. So a lot of people lower their head and carrying even knowing it’s bullshit, failing or dangerous. Being authentic gets you ostracized. All these guys knew it wasn’t gonna work but got sucked in that “let’s do it” vibe or maybe the guilt of abandoning the others. Pure Stanford experiment. Btw, they had a system to check in people in tents but Billy ruined it by telling everyone to just grab one.

I used to be an event planner and was freaking out about their lack of planning. That doc had me yelling at the TV! Nothing happened with that credit card scam so Billy wanted to go for gold. There's definitely more than two worlds online--I'm white and I didn't hear about Fyre Festival until it became famous as a shitshow after the fact. I didn't know about the orange squares until the documentaries. I don't even have an instagram. I heard the term "influencer" for the first time a few months ago (and I object to it for a few reasons but that's another topic.) I spend more time online than I should so I'm consuming a lot of "content" but I'm definitely in different bubbles from people who I'd consider major advertising demographics. I miss out on what I'd probably consider most mainstream culture but the way media exists now I'm not sure there's a solid mainstream that exists the way it for our parents or grandparents. I'm not trying to be hauty like "I'm too hipster and woke for mainstream culture" I just genuinely believe that the media climate now has formed many smaller ecosystems instead of a large predominant one. Some of those ecosystems have more power because their consumers have more economic and social power but they're not as monolithic as they used to be.

Oh my goodness, THANK YOU! I've been having an issue with most vlogs, and vloggers for so long and I couldn't describe it. But you did; "Preforming Fun". That's it. You can sometimes tell, when a glimmer in someone's eye just isn't there, when someone is faking it. And I think a lot of influencers do it, and I would sort of catch it, and it would bother me- but I couldn't explain why watching some one else enjoying themselves was irritating. Seriously,I thought I was a sociopath for a hot minute. And you gave me a word for it.

It just goes to show the power of “influence” and privilege. All of these companies and investors were supposed top players and they gave MILLIONS of dollars without doing their due diligence. People saw this going viral and were running and skipping and jumping to be a part of it. Locals see the glitz and glam of models and yachts and just KNEW money was coming. Didn’t even stop to think that they weren’t being paid. Didn’t even think about the logistics of tagging luggage. Hot mess. The whole thing with the app, I saw that more as like Billy just didn't have a clear plan for anything. It's like, oh it's an app, and a booking platform, and a music festival, and a social media presence, and and and. Like he was trying to make his business plan to be whatever the person he's talking to wants it to be, which is not a plan. So I don't see the music festival as supporting the app, it was only another part of Billy's nonsense money making scheme which didn't really have any purpose or direction.

But I think you would appreciate The Inventor because these two docs together show this trend of people believing that all you need to succeed is VISION and connections (whether it's influencers, politicians, CEOs, etc) without having any knowledge of the inner workings of the business or project that their trying to grow. Not to mention not having the ability to call it quits or start small. This whole "go big or go home" mentality. I mean, Fyre Fest is basically a bigger TanaCon. And the positivity bullshit they wanted to believe is what had them on board until the very end when they should have just jumped ship. This is why I hate fucking positivity, it never lets people address a situation properly or realistically. Billy actually told his workers that if you’re going to be negative then just leave because we need people with a “positive attitude”. what makes this situation so ridiculous and laughable was how easily it could have been avoided. Like they should have just postponed everything until they were ready, and then did the promotion with the influencers. Or just started off small and gradually got bigger. During most of both of the documentaries I was completely speechless. I had a few times where I yelled at the tv enraged but honestly I was speechless I had no words.

I don't like to criticize the millennials generation, because I think that each generation has their loads of problems. They are overeducated, less chance to own property in a world of complete uncertainty, they are the most unemployed, they have huge student debt, etc. Obviously, not all millennials are the same. But, for the ones that keep validating their identity on social media, this event was a cautionary tale! If it wasn't for the desire to show off and spent countless hours orchestrating your image on Instagram, this wouldn't have happened. I have to say, when I saw this event happening 2 years ago, I didn't feel sorry. And I still don't feel sorry. Simply because these people weren't interested in researching or questioning. They were interested in appearing or give a performance of a good time and using asinine terms such as "YOLO" after. Except for the workers of the company and especially the workers in the Bahamas. Those are the people for which I feel sorry for. For the employees of the company, because as an employee, you are in a position of doing the job without a voice. And many of them raised concerns but got rebuffed. But, I feel intense pain for people who were working for him in the Bahamas. The way they dealt with the issue clearly shows again and again how we think we could behave with countries that have less opportunity than us. We go there, with our ideas of superiority and abuse their hospitality. And in the 21st century, if we say we "are woke" the way we think "we are woke", this cannot keep going!

Billy Cunningham LOL, you funny. That sound like a character from a 1950s sitcom.

yeah poor people were not there, I just heard about it and watched the documentary on Netflix. I don't understand why none of the people who went didn't do any research to see where they were supposed to be staying. The influencers were just making their money they could not have seen that madness. When I started watching it I just knew JaRule did time for it also, but maybe he didn't have a big part, but I'm sure he made some money, he was on the breakfast club talking about it. Maybe JaRule is not that small. Good example of if you start a business, start small. I feel sorry for the Island restaurant owner who had to dig into her account for $50,000 to pay her people. I think that guy from the island got paid off it, notice how he's still in touch with Billy, like you said scamers find each other.

At first I though 50cent was just a bully to jaRule. Now I’m like Get ‘Em

I see that Aaliyah reference! And yes, Ja Rule is guilty as charged!

I wasn’t sure if I should make this video I’ve been planning about scams and how it affects different racial groups...kinda feel like I should make it now. People who are not expecting to be taken for ride seem easier to scam.

I guess I should go ahead and watch these Fyre documentaries too. The Netflix and KZbin algorithms been shoving them down my damn neck 😂
