In this video, Fieldcraft Survival CEO and Former Green Beret Mike Glover is joined by Fieldcraft Survival photographer Nick Roush to tell about the story behind the photo of Mike with the Afghan children. Mike revisits a photo taken in an Afghan School around 2005 with students near Tora Bora where the war began years prior. He recounts the children's interactions with him, their living conditions, and how they learned from one another's perspectives. The relationship that was developed between these Army soldiers and the people of Afghanistan forged a new outlook on life and love.

It really makes you think. We're like, ah the curriculum sucks, doesn't teach any life skills, etc. We forget there's some places on the planet where just learning addition and subtraction is a privilege.

It’s beautiful to hear stories like this. Here’s a man who’s in a country to hunt down and kill people but his humanity is shining through as he stands next to these small children. People forget that there’s children in the same villages as the bad guys. Thank you for sharing this photo so we don’t forget theres so much more to war than “getting the bad guy”.

@@ed1658 There are plenty of armed cops where I live but I hardly see their guns. I probably never saw one until I was 20 or something. So it is possible some kids haven't seen a gun on a war zone.

A man like Mike has done so much, been so many places, Seen the best humanity has to offer, and seen humanity at its absolute worst. Its really great to be able to hear the stories.... What once had to be sought out in documentaries and was limited to what was publishable is now documented straight from the horses mouth. Gotta love it!

I agree with you Mike, on your analysis of hatred being taught, especially to children. My take on it is that its one thing to be open hearted, but its another to be open minded. I'm open hearted, but my mind is always assessing, analyzing and preparing. On a different note, I remember my dad had to use Peltor headsets at work, in a factory. What I want to know is what ones are available now, like the ones you had.

amazing photo and story. it is truly amazing that people live in such ways still. it sort of makes me a little jealous in some ways. not the constant warring of course, but the more simple way of life. they probably dont have people constantly trying to show off the next newest fashion trend or gadget. just people surviving and focused on how to continue to survive. something very wholesome about it. im sure it is incredibly tough though. just a crazy thing to think about how different their world is from mine, yet they have probably been there for generations, probably incredibly happy and content in many ways.

he repeats the same sentece "the happiest people, but the poorest"... but the reason behind it, is the fact that it is like the realization that one usually have when camping...you might not have much in a certain moment in the wilderness but somehow there is a realization that there is happiness in those places, and the understanding that you don´t need much in order to live...

It sucks that messages like the one you're sharing in this post are basically preaching to the choir because it would either 1: not fit into the algorithm of the people that really need to hear it, or 2: get lost in the sea of traffic that goes across everyone's timeline because it doesn't trigger people. Thanks for sharing this perspective, wish more would do the same.

I was in Afghanistan in 2002 in a conventional infantry unit and while on patrol we were driving through a village and I remember seeing a little girl (probably 4 or 5 yo) and she was super dirty with tangle hair and she would clap a few times and then point at her open mouth and she was doing this over and over again. She was literally begging for food and water and it broke my heart. My kid at the time was 2 so it really hit home. I was this 22 year old infantryman standing in the gunners hatch almost sobbing. This affected me so much that after I got out of the military I considered taking time off work to travel back to Afghanistan with food and supplies for the kids.
