I was just driving those roads last week.. . It's not even the speed it's how close they moved the lines in some areas because of the construction going on(or whatever reason the lanes we're very close) at some points I'm thinking it's either scape the side of my car on the barrier or scrape the other side of my car on the 18 wheeler

@@siglavikingkearns8108 Commerce vs safety; large loaded down tractor trailer can't stop on a dime but needs to get where its going so your morning coffee can be $3. Even a regular passenger car needs a surprising distance to stop at highway speeds. So, did you notice that no matter what vehicle the conditions were dangerous for travel? The issue was the roadway was open and didn't have dynamic traffic controls. Ever been on a freeway with variable speeds depending on time of day and/or traffic flow? 40mph speed limit for trucks? Are you gonna foot the tax bill for a dedicated secondary freeway system for tractor trailers only or do you think you could actually hit that left side exit at 65 mph while merging into bumper to bumper tractor trailers going 35mph without the whole freeway ramming into the back of you?

@@siglavikingkearns8108 My point was overburdened and poorly maintained physical infrastructure, driving culture, and road conditions were to blame; not particular vehicle types. Possible and practical can be far apart. Gonna retrofit the 280 million some vehicles on America's roadways everyday? Who will pay for it? How would it be mandated? Even if you mandated all new vehicles come stock with such tech it could take decades before older models filter off the roadways.

@@sam-ib5vv exactly. People are obsessed with trying to control individuals and their choices and believing limiting them and making them relinquish control will invariably be better. In reality need to have *better information* in order to make better choices. This tragedy is something my employer was fighting to avoid. I pulled a very long shift at a facility that distributes medicine for people who cannot live without it. We're talking about heart pills, pain relievers that aspirin can't match, anti-seizure medication, etc. Just 5 hours ago, we ended a shift that started at 6 am to get as much of that distributed because all the upper management are VERY worried about the nasty weather and the upcoming holiday. FedEx ships almost 90% of our product (the rest is through mom-and-pop shipping companies) and seeing that crashed FedEx truck is only going to make tonight a sleepless one for me. The trauma of watching your family suffer while being trapped and being helpless to free them. This year has alrdy been bad enough and my heart breaks for all the families and friends hurting right now. To the first responders working this horrific scene, ty. Not only do you risk your life doing this kind of work in these conditions, but you often carry the burden of seeing such horrific deaths and injuries. Especially when children are involved or when you identify with those whom you are helping. I hope the men/women who worked this, don’t burry it if they can’t seem to get it off of their minds. It’s always ok to talk about the things you’re witness too. My husband always thought talking to councilors was not a thing he would ever need until he worked a scene so horrible, he could close his eyes to sleep without seeing it. So if you need help after this don’t be ashamed to get help or talk to loved ones about it. Ty for what you do.

I've seen far too many people driving recklessly on the 35W express to think this wasn't preventable. The weather was absolutely a big factor but poor decisions also contributed. This is sad and my heart goes out to the families. I don’t understand why a state of emergency isn’t declared in Texas during these freezes since they are not equipped to sand/salt the roads. They need to just shut it down and keep everyone safe. In Boston they do that when it gets super bad so that the streets are empty and the plows can really go to work without dealing with vehicles on the road. How many accidents need to happen before Texas declares a state of emergency to save lives?? Sooo sad.

I agree I am from Connecticut and we do the same...many people say Texas is not used this weather ... well that is a bigger reason for closing the roads and highways because people not only not know how to treat the road ( which as you know something that don’t even prevent icy roads ) but drivers don’t know how to drive on this weather. It is sad but hopefully new laws are created to avoid this.

@Futemire
@Futemire 3 жыл бұрын
The way it is setup here is that thru traffic can pay to use the express lane. It's usually a good thing for big trucks to use this lane so that they don't run the risk of not being able to slow down in time for merging traffic. However, this section of road is managed by a private company and not TX DOT; it is under investigation but multiple sources have said the road appeared untreated. I'll also note, don't confuse the express lanes with HOV lanes, we have those as well but that's not what these lanes were.

My prayers to all those and their families involved in this unfortunate accident. And to all those criticizing the drivers most likely have never driven on ice. The roads were obviously in good conditions until that section and once the first few vehicles realize and slowed came to a stop ALL the vehicles behind them were attempting to do the same hence the scenic we saw. Bottom line in low temps with precipitation the roads should have been salted or this section with the bridges closed and traffic rerouted. There is no control/stopping on ice, you lose control and hitting the brakes makes control even worse, as this patch of ice was unexpected (30 year’s driving in snow & ice and if I didn’t know to expect icy roads the result would be the same)

@ Salvatron- I didn’t say that those involved in the accident hadn’t driven on ice before, I said the ones making negative comments most likely hadn’t. And there is a difference in leaving your driveway and heading out on an ice covered road and obeying the speed limit of 70mph and SUDDENLY encountering ice. Once you hit that patch there is no stopping only spin-outs and these people were most likely praying at the first realization. Truckers are trained to handle icy roads - in this case “There was no stopping” which is what the first vehicles did and the pileup ensued. I honestly think that you and I wouldn’t have feared any better. Cut them some slack, say a prayer for all and ask - Why weren’t the road crews out checking and salting. Is so empowering being an armchair driver. It could have been you or me.I was on that road a week ago. Blessings

That's what surprised me!!! Most people would honk, flash their lights, TURN ON THEIR EMERGENCY FLASHERS, tap their brakes!!!; Do Texas drivers even know these exist on their cars??!!! They don't in Georgia!

This looks worse than anything I've seen in movies or TV... Triple digit amount of cars and trucks? That's wild. That ice must've been absolutely insane. Shame those people died. Imagine having to wait for that shit to clear up while being trapped in the car? My God...

Do they not believe in salt or dirt for their roads in TX? This was completely avoidable if they had a proper transportation department

Icy weather is relatively rare but we do have salt and sand trucks. DOT had been conducting ice prevention operations since Tuesday but it's still unclear how this happened. The speed limit on the expressway is 75 and I frequently see people driving in excess of 90 mph but hopefully that wasn't the case when this accident occurred.

If they put sand and salt on the streets that shouldn't happened. We have it up here in Canada all the time and they spray the roads with salt, sand and chemicals to prevent forming any icy on the road. You could be best driver it doesn't help on icy roads. No control whatsoever. My condolences for the families who lost their loved one.
