It is kind of odd that the best knife by the number of tools of their Alox-line is named as "Farmer X". Like it's so unassuming name you couldn't deduct by it, it's the pinnacle of the Alox-line. Compared to the Celedor-line where you have "Swiss Champs" and "Fieldmaster", "Farmer X" sounds outright pedestrian. Also all in all most people buying their first SAK without any profound knowledge probably wouldn't even consider Alox-line because they lack the back tools and tweezers. Shiny aluminium scales of Alox-line with the rectangle for engraving may give impression of something fancier and more sophisticated but more suitable for having it as a knick-knack on your desk instead of your pocket because very few are aware of the more robust main blade and screw driver.

I just bought one of these today from Amazon for $59. I already had a red Alox version as a collector's item and this one I'll actually use and carry in my bag. I had bought the regular Victorinox Farmer for my relatives in 2020 and they seemed to like them. I prefer all my Victorinox's to have a scissor, which I use often.

My EDC is an Electrician in ALOX. It's slim enough for the back pocket. I never used the saw anyway. The awl is the surprise star of the electrician. That tool gets used almost daily. As far as the missing scale tools, I keep a small SAK on my keychain, because why carry one knife when you can carry two? Besides, I like the reactions I get when folks ask if they can borrow a knife and I come back with, "Which one?" 🤣

I was between the Pioneer X and the Farmer X. I chose the Pioneer X for weight and size. I think a 4 layer Alox is too big for EDC. I would use the scissors much more than the saw. My SAKS are the Manager, the Recruit, the Mountaineer, the Alox Single and the Pioneer X.

Those knives being "heavy" or "light" is a personal opinion. Victorinox makes knives bulkier than that (Swisschamp, Handyman, etc) and many people carry them. The Farmer X is comparable with the Huntsman, a best-seller model. I really don't know why someone wouldn't buy the Farmer X.

Agreed, and of course I do carry the Farmer X. I have had the Huntsman for nearly a year now but don't carry it too much. Not sure why as it has a similar toolset.

I'm perfectly happy with the Farmer I bought before there were Farmer X's for outdoor use. That Swiss Army 7 would be pretty sweet though, the only thing that I miss going from a selador to alox is a second blade and that little hook blade would be quite useful.

I was in a quandary for most of your review, even if I enjoyed your content. At first I disagreed with your count of 4 reasons not to buy the Farmer X until I heard in your summary that reason 4 was because a person may never buy another SAK if they owned the Farmer X. I really did enjoy your review as you tied it up at the end, but I have to tell you that I immediately bought a second one as a gift for a brother-in-law because we both enjoy the configuration that Victorinox put into it. Yes; it's beefy and heavy but at my current age of 78 years, and remembering when I was 19-22 yrs old carrying 60 lbs of 40mm grenades on patrol in Viet Nam to feed my M-79 launcher for them, the Farmer X really didn't seem to be an issue: Merely a matter of perspective, I contend. Thanks for a great video on a subject I have enjoyed since the 1970s.

Some people just collect Swiss army knives and not really use them for example the usable one I have laying about my kitchen is a Spartan Which I find right for my needs But the largest one I have is the Swiss champ which I never Use because it's to big in my opinion but is still worth getting if you collect swiss army knives the downside of the alox models is always the price because you get less for more money with that particular design some people consider the alox grip to be worth the extra cost but some sort don't and you also get the limited edition versions that are year stamped that cost even more than the standard version so I always say when it comes to buying a Swiss army knife it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend on a single knife manly decides which ones you do buy or don't buy and everyone has different opinions on how much is to much but in the case of the alox farmer around £50 is the highest I would pay for a four layer swiss army knife

I get your point about cost and collecting. I have bought a few SAKs and end up only using a few regularly. Sometimes it's the more expensive ones that I use the most - like this one and the Midnite Manager

I maintain my comment on your teaser post. Farmer is the Alox equivalent of the Camper like Farmer X is to Huntsman. I never carried the Huntsman. I prefer the Ranger as the much more complete tool with the additional metal file plus 2 backside tools (chisel and dolphin screwdriver). It is only slightly heavier than the Huntsman. The scissors of my 58mm are great, why carrying more scissors? The Camper is therefore my choice over the Huntsman. Are the Alox versions better than their 91mm equivalents? Although I love the look and feel of the Alox and the bigger beefier main blade, the 91mm range wins. 1 - Additional scale tools 2 - additional small blade which I frequently use 3 - more solid reamer, less ergonomic than the Alox reamer, but more robust 4 - additional corkscrew which I simply love as a multi-purpose tool 5 - price With the trick of a cheap drugstore nailfile in combination with the 91mm SAK, the Camper is my winner.

You make a great case. I like my Huntsman, but don't carry it much. My Pioneer X has had a lot of carry time as does my Midnite Manager. However I am planning to try out the Farmer X on a long term carry test.... TBH there are many SAKs that do similar jobs well and in the ends it comes down to preference.

I regard this as the pinnacle of all EDC SAKs. Prior to this the Farmer was my favourite but with the scissors it is now perfect. It is not to thick at all, the Alox have better blades than the celidor so that is enough to decide it for me. The toothpick and tweezers are not essential, I carry a separate pair of tick removal tweezers anyway and FFS you can use a matchstick as a toothpick.

The Farmer X competes with: 1) Huntsman/Fieldmaster (scale tools, small blade, back layer awl, slightly lighter, shorter and thicker), 2) the Evo 17/18 and S versions (contour grip, slightly shorter tools at 85mm, serrated scissors, otherwise similar to Huntsman/Fieldmaster) and 3) my choice: the Roxon KS2 Elite. The Roxon adds locking blades and tools, one handed opening blades and tools, upgraded steel and killer scissors. It is slightly heavier than the Farmer X, but has a pocket clip.

I believe you should also mention the Outrider. For outdoors it is an excellent tool, not particularly pretty ( I prefer the Ranger Grip's elegant lines), but useful. Unfortunately it isn't UK legal ( liner lock ), but here in Switzerland that isn't an issue.

The KS2 Elite does move the game on. Unfortunately, it isn't as good in the hand (the satisfying snap of SAK tools🤤) means that it lacks the 'fiddle factor' and stays in a bag rather than my pocket. Hopefully, this will inspire Victorinox to innovate, as quality competition is definitely snapping at their heels. Which SAK though? They're all good.

It's a back pack carry. I'd argue you need 3 Alox knives depending on lifestyle. The Farmer X for hiking, the Harvester for carrying around the garden and the Pioneer for every day carry. You should also have a Rambler on you at all times, everyone has a Rambler or a manager right? 😀, that way, which ever Alox you choose to carry, everything is covered. As for price, you're going to get at least 10 years service out of an Alox knife, £40 for a piece of precision Swiss, Swiss made engineering that will last you 10 years or more is cheap. (told you you'd end up buying one 🤣)

Thanks a lot for your video. I own a Farmex X, it was my first alox. I hesitated A LOT with the Harvester (Swiss Army 7) but the store didn't have it (I wanted to see it before buying) and I want a knife with a ring. I so agree with you when you say this knife is good in an urban or a country environment. I dream about a "Harvester X", a Farmex X with the pruner blade in replacement of the can opener. About the scale tools, I fix the problem with a... 58mm (a rambler). Always in my bag. This knife is not cheap, it cost the same price as a climber (which is one of the best value from Victorinox with the Super Tinker and the... Waiter !). You can also get a really usefull and cheap 58mm knife with the Rally : The Rally has the small blade, philips screwdriver, nail file / screwdriver and scale tools for a ridiculous price (18$). Yeah, you don't have small scissors but the Farmer X has scissors... (I change the scale of my Rally to get the 58mm pen instead of the toothpick). I also have a Hunstman (my first Victorinox), the Hunstman is the 91mm brother of the Farmer X. But the feeling is really different. The Hunstman is an outdoor knife, a good balance between size / weight and tools. (If I have to replace my Hunstman, I think my choice will be the Ranger). The feeling with the Farmer X is to be a gentleman Farmer...

I always have a 58mm (a rambler on my bag or a rally in an edc pouch). tweezers are priceless and we underestimate the nail file. I don't like the new nail file on the cadet or sportman. I could talk about the Forester, the deluxe tinker, the waiter, the Delemont S14 evogrip or the compact but maybe in comment of your others videos :) A last word about the Farmer X : the wood saw is on the same side of the large blade. So it's not on the ring blade ! (Like the Hunstman). If you have a lanyard and try to saw with the Hunstman, the lanyard will be covered by sawdust. Remove it before ! With the Farmer X, you can keep the lanyard between the scale and your hand for a better grip.

The Farmer has a great toolset. Fine if you don't need scissors. Plus you can always pair and it with a Classic SD if you need/want scissors.

I agree, the farmer is almost perfect. I carried the red plastic knives, Tinker, Classic, etc. and didn’t get the Alox because I thought the soft aluminum scales would wear. Well, when I got an Alox Cadet I was shocked - no noticeable wear year after year while my plastic scale knives show many scratches. I next bought the Farmer (it came with a nylon belt case) and it has, for me, the most useful tools in any knife. I carry the Cadet daily, but I’m constantly aware of the extra tools on the Farmer for when I may need them.

I have probably all the SAK alox knives but this one fit the bill perfectly for my needs. Tweezers are on my keychain and I stopped using the toothpick years ago, preferring to carry RotaPoint toothpicks I get from my dentist (much more effective). My version of the Farmer X is red and was a Knifecenter exclusive. Three things I especially love about the knife is that the awl opens to the end of the handle and I also like the saw and scissors (of course). :)

I have all those SAK's and i prefer the Farmer plus. It's too big for pocket carry in my opinion but I carry mine on my belt In a leather pouch so it's not a problem. I love the hook blade on the #7 but the #7 doesn't have a key ring attachment making it harder to get out of my belt pouch. The Farmer plus has the key ring that I put a small 1 inch lanyard on to assist with getting it more easily out of my belt pouch. Out of all my SAK's its the best, i think, for all around work. The only thing it lacks is the handy little tweezers. I solved that problem by carrying a tiny leather pocket organizer that has a flashlight, collapsible ink pen and the tweezers in it. My intuition about the SAK must be generally good, because I picked up a beefy workchamp several years ago for its general handiness -- and more recently an alox Farmer for EDC. It's really perfect for me, since I'm spoiled about scissors, having worked over twenty years at a craft using them daily!

I've had them with me all day long , I'm going through the same dilemma and logic that you are but with a twist I'm comparing the farmer x alox with the field master . I also agree adding the special blade from the army 7 to the farmer x would be great .

I love my farmer. It has been my friend for probably more than 10 years by now. It's tougher than you think. I had to grind off the lanyard thingy and it makes a nasty hotspot. I'm about to trade it out for a Roxon KS2E. The Farmer will be my backup. I fancied a change and it has some serious scissors on it. Will have to remember not to walk about too much with it as the knife is locking.

Mine is paired up with a small pliers that both fit in a belt pouch. As far as the lanyard is concerned a small button battery flashlight hangs from that outside the pouch that easily disconnects. And yes I have Leatherman tool's but this is most efficient for personal use. Great video! : )

Love it! the only issue I have with it is the price. No idea why there is such a jump in price when adding an extra tool over the normal one? Even the pioneer X is pretty cheap, not much of a jump from the pioneer to the pioneer X. But it’s just a Alox huntsman without the back tools and small knife. It’s got all the tools the majority will ever need, with the more robust construction and the thicker tool blades. But saying that about price, the compact is over 50 bucks and that has a knife, scissors, combi tool, back tools the hook and I think awl and scale tools. That is a rip off, no idea why it’s so expensive. All I’m wanting is the options of some better steel and one hand opening in the 3” line from Victorinox.

There are rumours of some better steels. Some of these are more expensive because they are hand assembled. The scissors often add $10 to the price. Have you seen the recent @jongadget video at Victorinox HQ?

I have 3 Farmer Xs. All in PSKs - as are UK friendly. Great knife with a slightly thicker blade than in the normal (non-Alox) SAKs. I’ve had them a few years - so got them at better prices.

@@MB_EDC Correct - personal survival kit and they are indeed more socially acceptable. My everyday is either the Bantam Alox in my wallet, or a Huntsman in my pocket. I find the latter to be an excellent all rounder. For many years I carried a SAK Waiter - as that has a corkscrew. and was invaluable. Still fond of it. Congratulations on your channel. The Farmer X is the top of the top model amongst the Alox series. But that being said the Pioneer X is a very strong contender when it comes to realistic EDC use. For me the saw is the tool i use the least but i like to have the capability. But then the Pioneer X comes with it slightly slimmer frame..... Yeah, it is a tight race so i have both. ( Not true, i have two Farmer Xs, just in case).

I had both the pioneer x and farmer x alox. The weight was the issue for me, switched to normal 91mm. The 93mm Alox thick main blade and in line awl is not needed for civilian use. The back tools and plus scales are more important for me.

I undertand your concerns. I do like the thicker blade and in-line awl. This may be a winter carry for me - not when I have shorts on... I'm going to give it a longer term carry test. The great thing about SAKs is that there are loads to choose from!!!

I'd probably save a bit of weight and just opt for the regular farmer instead (assuming I anticipated a need for the saw, otherwise Pioneer or Cadet). I rarely use scissors out & about, about 90% of things I might do with them I can manage with a sharp knife instead.

Really good point, especially as I always have my Midnight Manager, or s Classic SD on me as well. Instead of the Farmer, I'd probably carry the Army 7 (Harvester) as I really liked the hook blade. I guess three Farmer X is good if you need a saw and scissors and only want to carry one SAK.

I have the Spyderco UKPK - which is one of my favourite pocket knives. The Farmer X is a great Victorinxo to have - very capable and the saw and scissors combination makes it very useful in lots of situations. Alox SAKs are my favourite as they have that classy, timeless look about them. If you want similar functionality and tweezers plus toothpick - try the Huntsman... more classic Victorinox rather than classy and usually very good value on Amazon.

@@MB_EDC to be honest it’s to popular :( it makes it feel expensive For a pencil an a needle extra …. I don’t know. But otherwise every other SAK has to blades and can and bottle opener wich are so obsolete. Just like the parcel hook. The main reason I like it is because it has the big scissors and one knife and that awesome can-bottle opener Joni tool. Everything else is nice to have options. Ps. A carry a classic on my keychain so toothpick and tweezers are there. The scissors I find sometimes to small.

I think it depends on off you actually use pliers much.. If not a SAK is a decent alternative. Maybe checkout a couple of my EDC videos or the Leatherman replacement videos. We can't EDC knives/told with locking blades in the UK (unless specifically need, e.g. for your occupation). So a SAK is ideal and over several videos I have been trying different models

I recommend the Victorinox Swiss tool Spirit X, it is the best tool I ever owned. Weight is acceptable 210 grams. And a nice sheath for on your belt.

​@@MB_EDC, Yeah, sure, all tools have a lock. And important: all tools are accessible without opening the pliers. All tools are smooth to open, and high quality. I own the normal Swiss tool also, that version is stronger, but also heavier, too heavy for my EDC use. The Spirit X is perfect for me. But do not buy the military version with the fuse crimper on the pliers. And choose the version with the scissors. There are also new versions with one-hand-opening of the blade. I do not need that, because I always carry an extra folding knife with clip, that opens with one hand. (mostly a RAT1 or RAT2). But I must warn you, when you have tried a Swiss tool, you will never use your Leathermans any more ! No more broken fingers nails , and no more skin pinched between the plier-handles 😀

If heavier bushcraft is planned then maybe a 111mm SAK like the Trekker/trailmaster would be better, or to go all in and get a fixed blade knife. I am still using my Mora and have a comparison video planned comparing it with a Hultafors and a Fiskars

@@MB_EDC the Farmer x wasn't my first sak, nor my first Alox. I think I have 3 Alox, I carry two, the Farmer x and a much slimmer model with only two blades, a standard straight edge and the shorter hook type blade. I use both every day, it's mostly the scissors that I use on the X. That's really why I like and bought the X. The scissors are good for gardening, same as the small hook blade. I think the other Alox I have is a farmer too, can't remember, it's brand new, I never used it. I put it into a pencil case I keep with my maps and I haven't taken it out of there. Two is one and all that. I think I have at least 10 SAK, from the US military version, the German military version and the Forester, lol. I even buy them as presents for people. Hard to beat a good SAK, you won't convince me not to buy more of them. Some of the collection pieces are actually a good investment. The limited edition pieces go up in value very quickly once sold out. I have some put away for my Grandchildren.

I always support small channels that make sense. On this model I would prefer the file over the saw but I EDC 2 layers max. For outdoor EDC and as a 'last resort knife/tool' I use the old Dutch army version of the Pioneer. It has the same tools but all are a bit thicker material. For in town I EDC the celludor Bantam because I use the toothpick a lot. There's also an alox Bantam if you really need a slim profile.

Really? I know the Pioneer X comes in different colours. TBH I like the silver alox the most. The coloured ones fade if carried a lot as the colour wears off.

@@twatmunro fair point... The scissors add weight, but I do use scissors a lot. I think the Farmer X works as a single SAK for the city or country. Otherwise choosing the best SAK for the day I would choose the Farmer or Army 7 for a camping trip. Have you seen the Army 7 it has the awesome hook blade!
